It felt like a misbegotten haven for society's outcasts, and I remember feeling too antsy even to sit on a bench as the fear of a surprise ambush ran through me. I thought of the park rather unfairly as the ugly stepsister to Washington Square Park, the one who couldn't afford to move out of the East Village. That myopic feeling honestly didn't dissipate until probably the last five years when I finally noticed the improvements around the park motivated no doubt by the encroaching gentrification. The renovated Field House was the first thing I noticed along with the clean, modernized restrooms. The surrounding fountains and gardens also made quite an impression. It's a haven for folks from all walks of life from the artistic and creative to the Wall Street type dude. Lots of characters! Lots of dogs...even better! The park includes basketball courts, handball courts (in use today and these guys are good!), squash courts, spraygrounds and fitness equipment. Bathrooms and changing rooms for the pool and supposedly wifi hot spots. As for the strange name, that was New York's 16th governor Hamilton Fish (1808-1893) who served in 1849-1850 and later went on to be a US Senator (1851-1857) and Secretary of State under President Ulysses Grant (1869-1877). Customizing the medals to correlate with each season seems so simple in practice, but it really makes you feel like you are playing for something that not everyone is going to get every three months. On the field, he and the crew are ALWAYS hospitable and available for questions or concerns and that can't be said for every day-to-day interaction that we all have in life, let alone in our various paid adventures. But the camaraderie shown doesn't end on the field, that crew brings it to the bar creating a postgame atmosphere that allows you to be whichever social character that you want to be, whether you be introverted or extroverted. I will say the only thing stopping me from giving the league 5 stars is the silly rule in place where if the score is 6 points or fewer within 2 minutes, it's a pro clock, but if it's 7 or 8 (which is still a one-possession game), it's a running clock.

Attending staff are useless - they don't care about the rules. There are some regular players there hogging up court time or wanting to play with their friends and not allowing equal court time to newcomers. Bunch of old farts acting like entitled grade schoolers. Staff are constantly on their phones and are just there to collect a measly paycheck. Utterly useless.

Other spots near the seams have giant flaps that are definitely hazardous - I've seen plenty of guys get tripped up and the potential for injury is high. I'm not sure what the association with Nike is, if they are still considered a sponsor of this field they (and the NYC Parks and Recs dept) should be ashamed of themselves for how neglected this field is. It's a great field in a great location and would definitely get more stars if it was repaired.

I'm excited about the new job, but 100x more excited about the 3 weeks I have until I start. There is nothing like the peace of mind that comes with the gap between jobs. You can completely check out of a work mindset, but also have a date where you know you are locking back in and have a steady paycheck. It's true freedom. No stress. I get to just spend all my time doing things I want to do?!? Maybe this is how life should be all the time... I can't WAIT. I'm gonna take a couple trips and soak up some culture, write a bunch, play some basketball, go to a few restaurants at odd times during the week when I normally would need a res weeks in advance, maybe read a book (probably not though), and just decompress. Do only things that feed my soul. Do things for the sole purpose of wanting to do them. I actually pray for times like this...
