We came here on Kings day to just get off the streets and drink a cold one. Before we could get in the door, the security guard was questioning us what we were going to do here. I thought it was an odd question since it is a bar and we were going in to drink. But then my wife told me it was probably to reject the people that just wanted to come in to use the toilet. Which made sense. It's a pretty old bar and old wooden tables and chairs. Looks to be a local spot during regular times. At first we sat inside and then moved outside to enjoy the riffraff with all the people celebrating Kings day. The drinks are pretty standard here. Prices were pretty good though. I would probably not come on a regular day, but glad that we came in though. read more

Came in and sat outside around 4pm on a Saturday. It was busy and you seat yourself. The servers were nice and attentive once they noticed you were there. There are several other restaurants nearby with outdoor seating as well so it was a bit loud. Only had some snacks and they arrived hot and tasted great. read more

Disappointing. Redeeming factor: you can enjoy a cold bad beer on the Leidseplein terrace.

The only good thing about this place is the view if you sit outside. It's located in Leidsplien which is the area with a lot of cool pubs so the vibe is nice if you're in the outdoor seating. The beer and fries were average here and I've tried much better ones anywhere in the city. Service was super slow and was also kinda confusing as the servers from nearby places were also serving in between. We were seated for about 10 mins but no one came to take the order, finally had to go inside and ask. No one checked on the table after serving, kept waiting for the check as well and went inside to settle it again. I would try another place next time. read more

I love Pub breakfasts. And breakfast generally. This was an enjoyable one. We enjoyed a late breakfast (12:30pm) here mid-week, and (first high point), they still served us the breakfast menu. The pub was quiet and the service attentive, plus free WiFi (although, negative, one of those "free" that makes you like the business on Facebook AND post to your wall to get online, which I do not love). The Irish breakfast consisted of two fried eggs (I ordered mine "soft", so they'd be nice and runny; my partner's that were regular were relatively well-done), two sausages 3 pieces of ham/bacon (nice and not too fatty), a small hash brown and beans that were not as tomatoey and bland as I've become accustomed to when places make an "English" (or "Irish") breakfast. (The meal came with a basket of toast that we forgot to decline, all at a slightly expensive 9,20 Euro). Overall, I was very happy and we'll likely enjoy breakfast here again. read more

Restaurant is in a great location right in the middle of everything in Leidseplein. It's a typical pub that you would see anywhere in the US. Typical bar food and beer selection as well. We came here to grab some food and a few beers before going out for the night. I kept it simple with some wings and fries, both of which were fine but nothing special. Great fish and chips, burger over cooked not sure where the Guinness part came in but didn't taste it in the 'Guinness burger'. Service was great. They cooked the burger like a piece of leather even though we asked for it medium rare. read more

I'm agreeing with the last few reviews .... Branded beers will be the same, never mind that it is La Trappe a truly fine beer. And yes, you are smack dab in the middle of the tourist area, with outside tables to people watch. And that's what I am, a tourist right now ... Just because I'm in Holland for a month doesn't take that away. From the food served nearby it looks like just basic bar food ... Nothing bad, nothing great. read more

A beer is a beer everywhere ... given the same brand ... the difference is the location of the pub and the service you get. This pub is placed in the most crowded and touristic place in Amsterdam. They have a very nice terrace, like all the surrounding bars, the beer is good, like all the surrounding bars but the service, at least last night, was BAD. Not bad as in rude, bad as in non existing and faulty. Mistakes form the numbers of beers to take, to the size of the glass to the bill wrongly made. Cherry on top of the cake, the waiter would not recognize the errors he made and came up with an incredible story .... according to him, the SMALL glass of beer costs exactly as the MEDIUM !! Yes, then why even bother selling a small!! Over all, I had a nice relaxed time, and I encourage anyone to stop by if the evening is nice... even if it is chilly and rainy, they have big umbrellas with heaters so there is no weather conditions, except probably for a tornado, which would stop you form getting your drinks outside!! read more

This is a fantastic location. I came here on a recommendation from a regular. I didn't really understand the outdoor seating- the chairs have the name of the bar on them and we actually sat at the table next door. I still wanted to see if say the server who was a friend of a friend was working, and just let her know he had recommended the place and possibly move tables if she was. I waived politely at the hoopman's waitress and politely said excuse me. She aggressively yelled back- not my bar. Then shook her head at me in annoyance and turned her back. I replied- I have a question, I know it's not your bar please way. She continues to shake her head and walk away. There is no reason to be rude to a stranger, more or less a potential customer. It wasn't what she said but the way she said it. Very disappointing. We walked like half a mile out of our way specifically to stop by to be treated like garbage. Needless to say we didn't move tables, and were glad we ate at the restaurant next door. I hope the wait staff considers this before yelling at another guest. read more

We generally come here just after we have arrived for a 2 or 3 day stay in the City. The food in Irish bars is usually quite good, nothing special, but it hits the spot. We both ordered small beers and Irish breakfasts. The waitress was very welcoming and friendly, the service was very good and we were asked if we wanted more drinks. The prices were very reasonable, too. There were plenty of seating options to accommodate large groups or cosy areas for couples. This is a great place to come and enjoy the atmosphere and vibrancy of this City. read more

Had a great night here with my girlfriends visiting AMS for the weekend. Came in here because the atmosphere seemed fun & casual enough that all 7 of us would be happy. Drinks were on the pricier side, but I've seen worse. No cocktails, but the kiwi lime cider was unbelievably refreshing. We left after we had been there for what felt like hours, in the best way, and everywhere else we walked in we walked right back out. Should have stayed at Hoopman. Service was wonderful, music was loud & nostalgic -- a tourist spot, but didn't make me feel like I was in America like a lot of touristy bars. read more

This is a great place to sit outside in the open while having some bar food and a beer. It's especially good when the sun is out. During the warmer months sitting out here is also pleasant at night. It's also a great spot from which to people watch. The food is okay and the beer all right. The service was okay. They required us to pay for each round when it was served. A typical, relaxed bar setting with a pretty decent beer list and a traditional Irish menu. It wasn't very crowded inside so we were able to enjoy our conversation, food was hearty, and the service was very prompt. This is my favorite pub in Amsterdam, located close to all the attractions. Hoopman is a great place to grab a beer or a whiskey from their large selection. If you are hungry grab a quick Dutch snack such as .bitterballen or one of their many tasty fare, the staff are very friendly and attentive. I have been coming to Amsterdam for several years now, my first stop after checking into my hotel is Hoopman. It is a warm and friendly atmosphere, the staff make you feel very welcome. They have a great selection of Dutch and imported beers along with an excellent variety of whiskeys and scotches. There is a great food menu for a quick snack or a full meal, excellent Sunday roast. If you are here during the holiday season be sure to have some gluhwein. read more
