Had no problems booking my trip on March 30th, 2013. From the start had a great experience. The guy in the office I believe it was Steve, was super friendly when buying our sinkers and boarding pass. Went onto the Coroloma and had a blast! The boat was clean and had plenty of seating. The deckhand Sean introduced himself to my family right when we got onto the boat and was extremely helpful throughout the entire trip. The Capt knew all the right spots to hit, matter of fact my group of seven caught our limits. We will be coming back soon to schedule a summer trip. read more

Wow. WHAT A RIP OFF. First and last time at this place. I have never left a review for a business, but after Friday nights lobster run, i just had to. Heres where this place went wrong: 1) Falsely advertised on GROUPON. I purchased 2 groupons from groupon.com for $37 each. The groupon site said it was a $75 value for each ticket. I later found that we got ripped off because the deckhand told us that it was only about $50 without the coupon. No such thing as a $75 value. 2) Advertised as a 6 hour trip.. boat only went out for 4 hours. Groupon said that it was a 6 hour lobstrer fishing trip, we left after 6pm, and arrived at the dock a little after 10pm. The deckhand told me "we have to be at the dock at 3am for tomorrows fishing trip". Thats a bunch of BS! 6 hours turned into 4 hours. 3)Horrible communication. The deckhand Ryan is a cool guy, teaches you and fun to talk to. The lady 1st mate, not so fun. We checked in at the office, later got on the boat, and she didnt believe us that we were supposed to be on the boat. HELLO! We checked in at the office, not our problem they cant communicate! They even asked for our information so they could call the office.. get it right people. Not to mention when it came time to close out our tab for buyingh beers and hot chocolate on the boat, she can't do math and kept short changing us our change. If you really need to short me a buck, just ask for one. 4)The boat didnt bring enough nets on board... SERIOUSLY??! The boat was allowed to have 10 nets aboard, they only brought 8 nets for 18 people... Seriously?? 5) They cushion their catch... LOSERS! I was at the front of the boat for every net pull and saw what was coming up in the nets. That night we brought in a total of 2 lobsters, about 40 rock crab, 8 spider crab, and 1 small baby rockfish. If you look at the total catch for the lobster trip on their website, they posted that they caught way more.. i mean not just a few.. they up their numbers by 300%. All I have to say is that they lost my respect and future business. I have fished many areas, many boats, many charters in southern california. This time I just had to register with yelp and let you all know what kind of place this is. I will not recommend this place to anyone. Everyone on the boat that day felt the same. Trust me, it wasnt just me, it was everyone on the boat that was upset with all these gimics. read more

Limits of rockfish and lingcod on my rockfish trip. Got a yellowfin tuna on the recent very rare tuna trip. Unfortunately they gave all the otherwise unwanted tuna heads and the head from my filleted tuna I requested to someone else. I got my bag of tuna steaks and yellowtail so it's not a big deal. Just disappointing for some Asians back home to miss out on those tuna heads. read more

We were out Sat April 11th on the 3/4 day, and our whole crew had a blast... Couldn't have asked for a better crew. Chris was our Captain, this guy was rad. Bobby, Chad, and Justin were the crew... Safe to say these guys have a lot of patience. Never stopped helping us out with tangles/rebaiting/advice/etc and all with great attitudes. Such a great day. The New Hustler is the best charter ever. I've been a few times over the last 3 years and Captain Chris and his crew are next level. We always catch a bunch of fish (20 yesterday) and have the most amazing time. The crew is so patient, helpful and extremely hardworking! I can instantly tell the difference whenever I'm on a different charter, with the overcrowded boats and understaffed and unhelpful crew. I miss the old crew. Went out on the Coroloma about two weeks ago and for the first time I was very disappointed. This was the first time I have gone out on Sunday with my kid and before we even left, it was already decided there would be no surface fishing. I understand there were kids, but the old crew always made an effort to catch some yellows. I think what surprised me the most was the fact that the new captain decided to take us 2 plus hours south to fish for Rock fish. The spots he picked weren't anything special, a matter a fact he moved us at least 6 times and a few of those moves were just a few hundred feet from the previous with the same results. He could have saved a bunch of fuel had he just gone to the island for rock fish. It was a very disappointing day on the water. How can you make it worse, well let me tell you. My son and I caught several small fish that we decided to release. We kept the fish we wanted, approximately 6 each. While heading back to shore I heard the captain say, everyone caught there limit. I thought to myself, no we didn't, only to realize that they put some smaller fish other people didn't want on our tab. What kind of BS is that. If I wanted some small fish I would have kept the crap I caught. Plus to put icing on the cake, the crew couldn't even fillet all the fish in time even though it took us over two hours to return. We spent an hour sitting outside the channel while they finished. Didn't get off the boat until after 5. This was my favorite boat, the old crew was great and the staff in the shop is amazing, but the captain wasn't anything special and from what I heard on the boat from others who have had similar experiences recently, I won't be returning. Time to say good bye to Hooks. Think I'm going to track Conor down on the Twin Speed. read more

Best boats around! I love going fishing out of Capt Hook's! Jeff, the owner is great. The boats I have been on (Speed twin and Island Spirit) are both superb. The deck hands (Jeff being one of them sometimes) are helpful and courteous. They look out for the safety of the passengers and get you to some good fish. Last trip I was on, the boat landed 2 yellowtail amongst all the other Baracuda, rockfish, and sculpin. I had never seen a yellowtail and that was a fun experience. If you are looking for a good day of fishing, try Capt Hook's. You won't be dissapointed! read more

Well here's an overview of what other people have said about fishing with Hook's landing and the Coroloma. First off, if you use some sort of Groupon deal, you're going to have a bad time. Apparently, they were losing money through the groupon deal. Just pay the full price. No big deal. They don't have any sinks on the Coroloma to wash your hands. Honestly, who cares? You're fishing and you should expect to get a little dirty. Bring some wipes or something if it bothers you that much. The boat may leave at 6 am, but expect a boat ride up to 2 hours to get to the fishing spot. And then there's another 2 hours back to the harbor. A fishing trip from 6am-4pm means you may be fishing from 8am to 2pm. Alright, I'm a little new to the deep sea fishing thing. So far, I've gone on two boats, the Speed Twin with CISCO's and the Coroloma with Hook's. Since i used two different boats, I believe I can give an unbiased opinion of sorts. Although, I definitely have my preference. Cisco's was only okay. The boat seemed way too packed, even with 55 people out of its maximum of 70. There were 4 crew members, 3 of which were unprofessional teenagers (I'm 19 and even I think it was unprofessional). They cursed around small children and goofed off a bit. It wasn't absolutely horrible though. Fishing was okay. Average of 3 rockfish per person. Seemed like an average experience. Not bad, but not good either. Now, I went on a 3/4 trip with the Coroloma about two weeks later on 6/28/13. The boat wasn't packed with people because I guess they aren't as well known as Cisco's. 25/49 people. We went down the coast for 2 hours after White Sea Bass. The crew was extremely helpful getting our lines set up. No white sea bass, so we moved to get rock fish to fill our bags. The captain definitely put us on the fish and the crew worked hard to get our lines in the water as often as possible. A few of them started teasing my girlfriend, calling her the "fish slayer" because she would pull up rockfish so often. It was her 2nd time fishing....Ever!!!.... Our experience with the crew was phenomenal and we couldn't ask for a better trip. We even won the jackpot :) I took the free trip for 2 instead of the cash jackpot because I will definitely be back. Tips- Buy your own rod for a better experience. Go to sports chalet and talk to someone that has gone fishing for rockfish/white sea bass. A starter combo should cost around $80. The rental rods aren't as sensitive as I'd like and I don't like the reels. (I let my girlfriend use my new combo and I used her rental) Check the weather before you go out. Call and ask. They should give you some idea. Be social and get to know the crew. They'll give you more tips than if you're quiet. Bring sunscreen. Trust me, you should have seen some people's tan lines from wearing sunglasses.... Wear layers. it gets cold in the morning. Bring your own lunch. Something that you can eat with fishy fingers. Unless you're cool with paying $7 for a delicious burger. The aroma got to me and I had to buy one..... Have fun and go to Hook's Landing if you want to do a 3/4 day :) read more

My husband goes fishing with this crew a couple of time each year, and always has a great time. By all reports, the crew is attentive, helpful and friendly. Last night we had some of the best fish and chips we have ever eaten, made with some of the fish that was caught a couple of days ago. First time been on this ''Coroloma'' fishing boat from Hook's landing yesterday, I knew this landing exist for a while bust just never have a chance to try it before . My impression was disappointed, had this giant sheep head hook up by a shrimp that we brought, & the deckhand told me right away that you are not in a Jackpot which I proof it to him after that we did brought the Jackpot. At the end of the trip to weight it for the Jackpot, we bring up the fish, the deckhand told us the fishing does not count as Jackpot because it was caught by our own shrimp that we brought. He told us we have to use the bait that's provided on the boat to count as Jackpot. I was like ''WHAT'' !! So it's the same idea if the fish caught on a jig then it won't count then.. I'm not even sure if this deckhand even telling the truth or not, or he just mess with me. I been fish for many years & never HEARD of anything like this before. Also the captain does not know how to sail a boat, everytime reset the spot all the lines got tangle , always change spot, the whole day is about changing spots. Come on!! we are only rockfishing !! how hard to find a good rock fish spot & stay for a while. Everytime the fish start biting, the boat start moving again. I been yell out loud many time ask for GAFF no one ever heard me, couple fish got away because of that. So for those who never fish before probably having hard time to understand the situation, but for those always go out fishing you should know exactly how what I'm talking about , just try it once compare with SEA LANDING or Cisco right cross the bridge, can tell the differences right away. The only good thing you can consider is the price, it is cheap, but I wouldn't spend one & half hour again to driver up there for this, not this boat. read more

Nothing less than an awesome day fishing! My daughter's 1st deep sea fishing trip. We did a mother/daughter bonding day and it was a blast! STAY AWAY FROM THE COROLOMA! The crew simply does not care about whether you have a good day or not. Whether you catch fish or not. Instead, all they're concerned about is making as much money off of you as they can. EXAMPLE: I WAS ON THE FISHING BOAT A WEEK AGO. I NOTICED THAT THERE WERE 20 PEOPLE ENTERED IN THE JACKPOT WHICH SHOULD HAVE BEEN A JACKPOT OF $200 ($10 entrance fee). When the day was over, I heard the deckhand (who was not very helpful the entire day) approach the winner of the jackpot and tell him that he had some choices. First he misrepresented that the total jackpot was only $120. So right there I felt $80 have been scammed off the top. The winner was then told that he could have a free pass ( value $65 ) If he were to waive the jackpot and give it all to the crew. The winning fisherman politely declined and simply indicated he would like to have the jackpot proceeds. The deckhand did not give up there. Instead, he went on to tell the winner that the crew were all on minimum wages and that they could hardly make ends meet at home With their expenses and families to take care of.,Unfortunately for the deckhand, the winner was not sympathetic or simply was not just buying into the comments. When the winning fisherman finally said that he was adamant on receiving his winning proceeds, the deck can sarcastically yelled "REALLY?" "ARE YOU FOR REAL?" " You're unbelievable!" The deckhand then abruptly stopped and turned away, turning a cold shoulder to the fisherman who did nothing wrong other than to want to receive his winnings. THE FISHERMAN SEEMED ANGERED BY THE ATTITUDE AND COMMENTS MADE BY THE CREW MEMBER AND IT WAS APPARENT THAT A DAY OF FISHING TURNED OUT TO BE A BAD EXPERIENCE AND MEMORY. I WANTED TO INTERVENE BUT DECIDED WHY? I'LL NEVER BE ON THIS BOAT AGAIN.. THE CREW WAS NOT VERY HELPFUL AND ONE OF THE TWO MEMBERS WAS VERY GREEN. I ALSO DON'T THINK THAT UPON STOPPING THE SHIP TO FISH, THE CAPTAIN SHOULD not COME DOWN AND TRY TO OCCUPY THE BEST SPOT. " Stay up and use your fishfinder... Right? So I agree with the other reviewer where he said it should be called "Capt. Crooks!" WHY SHOULD I ENTER $10 TO TRY AND WIN THE JACKPOT ONLY TO BE PRESSURED TO GIVE IT ALL BACK... My first time fishing experience was spent on the Coroloma at Hooks Sportfishing. It was a great experience. The crew was very helpful. Russell helped me with all of my needs like hooking my bait, untangling my rod and helping me pull up my catch of the day. Joey was also very attentive. He was always there when I needed him. I came home with 5 fish in total and the best part is that they offer skinning and cutting the fish to take home. It's an extra charge but totally worth it! The captain, Steve, was super cool and made the experience fun. They have a snack bar/ grill. Got a breakfast sandwich (which was DELICIOUS) and enjoyed a nice corona with some limonsito at noon to help keep me cool around noon. 11/10 I'd go back. Definitely recommend to anyone local or visiting. read more

Great Captain and crew on board the Coroloma! The Captain got us on top of the fish very fast and the deckhands made sure everyone was rigged up and well taken care of at all times. We went out in rough seas but the captain still found the spots where we could get some fish and not get hit by the large swells. Took the harbor cruise for the 4th of july fireworks display. The $20.00 for adults and $10.00 for kids charge was a great deal compared to other los angeles, orange and ventura county harbor cruises for that day. The crew was so nice in fact we did not take off till 7:30 when the ticket stated 7pm departure from the marina. Turned out there were people who were late and they decided to wait for them. Ten minutes after we started cruising the harbor there was an announcement that we are turning back to pick up more late comers. People started getting upset. First 30 minutes behind schedule and then go back to pick up 3 more who are now 45 minutes late. The sun was almost down the horizon. We missed the sunset and nobody was in the mood at that time. There was no apology to the passengers who was considerate enough to arrive on time. It was chilly so glad we bundled up complete with hoodies and beanies. The boat stopped at the middle of the harbor to wait for the fireworks display. The kids like the experience of watching it from the boat . After the pyrotechics display the passengers were still grumpy about the delay earlier. And who can blame them? read more

The landing is extremely friendly and very helpful. Mary has the best customer service skills of any landing I have fished in the past 40 years. The New Hustler captain works hard and knows when to hold and when to fold! Deck hands worked it all day. Very helpful and the cook made great food with a smile and keeps a very clean galley. Went fishing today on the Coroloma out of hooks landing. I asked the lady at the ticket selling office how they determine the fishing spots on the rail of the boat. She told me first come first serve. I got to the landing one and a half hours before the departing time, so I could get a good fishing spot. I was behind one other fisherman boarding the boat. When I walk up the plank the guy in front of me went to a spot I wasn't interested in, so I went straight to the corner-port strean and when I went to put my poles down, the deckhand had taken one of his regulars ( fishes all the time) poles and put them in the corner I had gotten there early to get such a spot. This boat is more suited for novice fisherman. If you are an experienced fisherperson your probably better off finding another boat. I understand that most of these deckhands probably couldn't get a regular job, being most of them seem to have an IQ that if you had for a golf score you would have Tiger Woods shaking in his Nikes, but there employer should teach them about return business. You could expect not to have to much return business if you favor one PAYING CUSTOMER over another. It's like the old Alpha Beta commercials, tell a friend! read more

Hooks Landing is owned by the most dis-honest people that we have ever run across. They called us to do an emergency dive service on their boat "The New Bluefin". We dropped what we were doing to accommodate our new customer, even though every other dive service would not consider doing the job. So not only were we doing them a favor by putting them first, we saved them $1500+, by them not having to get hauld out and getting a brand new prop put on. We gave them a 25% discount off our service bill. There was another diver who went and looked at it when we were done, and said that we had done a job better than he would done! The job was finished on 5-3-12. Went back to the landing the very next day (friday) and steve(the owner) we would get paid monday 5-7-12 at the latest. their remaining bill at the time was only $50, but now after almost three months since the job was finished, we had no other choice than to tax them with late fees. They now owe us $400 for collection service, and the charge for the mechanical lean on their boat. No wonder why they dont have much business. We have let everyone we know not to do any kind of business with hooks landing. Steves wife does nothing but hang up on you and lie. So sure if you feel like possibly drowning on anyone of their boats feel free to give them a call! read more

I'm an avid sportfishing woman, and have been on many boats at different landings up and down the coast. For my first trip with Hooks Landing, my daughter and I went out on the 3/4 day boat. The Coroloma is a beautiful boat, big galley, sits in the water nicely for fishing and minimize seasickness. The limited load of anglers really makes for a friendly trip also, as folks are able to stay out of each others way. There isn't so much of an early morning lineup to get the good stern spots. But what I really like best about the Coroloma is the crew. Very on top of the situation at all times, immediatly ready with the gaff and the few inevitable tangles. Plus, they seemed like they were having fun and enjoying the day, which really helps the anglers have a great trip too. The skipper knows where the fish are, as we had nice full sacks of a wide variety of fish and coming in for the day, we had to park outside the harbor for a little while so they could finish cleaning fish. Jackpot fish was a 35 lb. White Sea Bass. Barracuda bite was also on. A nice ling cod, a big calico. For those that missed the serious fish, there were plenty of tasty shallow water rockfish that filled up the sacks. Can't wait to fish with the Coroloma again! This boat could easily become my regular outing. read more
