The New Hustler leaves at 2am, fishing the outer Channel Islands. The early departure allows plenty of fishing time at spots not fished by the 1/2 day and 3/4 day boats. The full day boat is limited to 24 mostly happy anglers. A few of my fellow anglers suffered from sea sickness as the winds were not kind. Quality lingcod, snapper and various rock fish was caught by most. Crew takes care of your catch and can fillet, scale, or gill n gut. I choose fillets, which are immediately ready for flour, egg and panko. Today's deckhands Tanner and Dustin were pretty quick in detangling and tossing fish in numbered gunny sacks. Captain stayed out until 7pm - schedule is 6pm. I appreciated the extra hour fishing or maybe it was that we were fighting the current when coming in. Either way, the trip scratched that fishing itch. Pro-tip: I used to get sick every trip out. Tried Dramamine, the scopolamine patch, and even electronic gizmos with no success. If you have kids that don't like smelling smoke and bad words flying everywhere by everyone this is prob not the boat for you. I hate fishing now because I have tried it like 5 times and I get sick everytime, but I still had fun on this boat! read more

Formerly Capt Hook's Sportfishing, now under new ownership as Papa Hook's but same staff. Went fishing on Aloha Spirit for a full day on Friday, first time fishing without a large group of friends on a charter. Most of the crew were amazing; patient, helpful and they did there best to make sure everyone on the boat had a good time... especially Cory. I say most because there was one deck hand that was a pain in the a$$. However, everyone else made sure to make up for his lack of courtesy. The Captain was cute and did his best to find the fish, guess this season has been slower than most. After posting my fish on Facebook, I got a few friends to go in a couple of weeks. Perhaps I'll revise my rating to Five Stars after the upcoming trip. If anyone if interested, this is a great place for beginners to all skill levels. P.S. If you're a guy that doesn't take your gilrfriend because you think she'll be maintenence... don't worry, just take her along and trust the deckhands will help her with new lines, baiting, etc. read more

Went out today with my buddies for the first time, the deck hand Steven was super nice to us, and on point with getting us set up to catch fish. The captain Steve was very nice and easy to talk to ...no captain Ron here lol. The other deck hand lady very helpful too, and the famous Punky was Killin it on the grill. I purchased (2) discount tickets from SpreeBird for the Coroloma boat, for my husband and my brother as GIFTS! FYI not the first time I have purchased from Spreebird.... I made the reservation with STEVE and sent my brother with the Tickets yesterday 12/11/11 to go fishing. STEVE refused to let them on the boat. many words were exchanged with my brother and Steve. I phoned Steve to speak with him about 7:25am and he told me my tickets must have been fraudulent cause they didnt look like his! I am NOT inpressed with this man as a Buisiness professional I certainly will NEVER recommend his company to anyone! Captain likes to yell at customers and embarrass them...no one gave my kids any help/instruction. they set up our rental rods for bottom, while everyone else was surface & catching yellowtail & baracuda, kids were so bored they gave up and went inside to play cards. Eventually they maxed out on surface fish & gave us suckers a chance to catch some white fish.. not exactly a challenge. read more

Horrible Experience! I spent more time dealing with their crappy broken reels than actually fishing. Even the deck hands got tired of dealing with them. I ended up using a family members pole. When i get to the office, incompetent cashier Amanda was disrespectful, rude and refused to help me with a refund on equipment rental. Both rods i rented were bad. She said that only the manager can do refunds and gave me the managers name and the store phone number. I traveled 3 hours for this crappy experience? What a joke. Who puts people in charge that can't be trusted to do a simple return. I guess management doesn't trust their employees any more than i trust their rental equipment. I will let the other 45 people in our party know about the awful attitude and service i got from Amanda at Hooks. 45 people x $80 a person vs 2 pole rentals at $15 each. not to mention the galley charges $$$. For me, the Deck Hands make the experience happen on these trips. The guys on the Coroloma keep a friendly, positive and informative approach. There's alot of stuff happening and they are the ultimate mutli-takers. But I've been on other Boats and when a deck hand has attitude it ruins the Day. They left right on time and the Captain tried hard to find the right spot. They all try, but with the addition of Eddie, made the difference, this guy works magic with his experience. Did the 1/2 day Estrella. It's okay. Sarah, the galley cook was the best, not in the kitchen, but on the deck. She was really helpful. Just dropped line to bottom, real basic fishing. But the real reason for only 2 stars is the ending. Took 3 hours once we were done fishing to get back to the harbor. Just sat there as fish were being filet'd for hours. Real downer after an early morning of fishing and all day in the sun. And then to top it off, Captain won't enter the harbor until everyone's tab is taken care of. This was another 30 minutes of just floating on the water. All of this could easily be fixed, can't understand how they don't see the problem here. And having your fish cut is way too expensive. Been fishing out of here before and had a good experience however went on the colorama 3/4 day boat this week and had a not so good trip. Boat was supposed to leave at 6. Left at 6:30. Stopped fishing at 1:30 and did a slow 2 hour boat ride back to Channel Islands Boat had only one deck hand one cook. Did all Of my untangling and took all 6 of my tiny white fish off and bagged them myself. We did not stop for live bait I hooked up with a good size fish only to have the captain grab my pole and have the fish break off. He then handed me back my pole and shrugged his shoulders. He seemed bothered when asked to tie new dropper loops Had a patty melt and two beers and was told that will be 32$. He said I had a burger also and a soda and a water. The guy behind me had that. The cook finally gave me back 10$ and said sorry. Had 8 small fish cleaned for 11$ and had to re trim the bones out of them when I got home read more

First trip on the Coroloma 5/20/18, since 2017 - Russ is still there but all others are gone. Fishing was a little tough for quality rock fish but we all managed to find limits, including some nice reds. It would have been nice had we searched for lings once we had full limits of rock cod (a friendly suggestion). Service was very good (as usual). We noticed the skipper was now JJ, Russ was his friendly self (as usual), galley girl Dawn was also new and she made a mean breakfast burrito. So I was super stoked to come here , I drove down 1 hour and half to come here called and confirmed (before driving )everything with a man , didn't catch his name but he was super nice ! The day of I had some questions and some girl name Nevett or something answered the phone with a really pissy attitude and was answering the questions with a "don't you already know kinda attitude" now mind you I'm not from the area so . . How am I supposed to know anything and this is my first time ?!?!?!???!??? Basically she was giving such a negative attitude and she was honestly the rudest person I have ever encountered myself with she also mocked my voice ??????? I'm going to try and be "fair and balanced" despite having my worst trip ever on an open party trip on the Coroloma. I'll take some responsibility for not reading other reviews first or asking what species would be pursued before our trip (previous fish counts indicated alternating rockfish and yellowtail trips). We went on a 3/4-day fishing trip on the Coroloma on a Sunday this August, and this was probably the wrong boat for our purpose and this time of year. My wife and I like fishing, and have been on a number of trips on other party boats and our own 21-footer. Our goal was to take our 11-yr-old nephew on a fishing trip where he would be likely to catch a decent number of fish. The charter/party boats usually do a good job of finding the fish, and the weather in August is a little much for our own boat. But the yellowtail were biting, so that's what the captain went after. After an extremely slow ticketing/boarding process, we launched almost 1/2 hour after the scheduled departure. We showed up at 5:25 AM per the instructions, and mostly stood still in a line for the next 30 minutes waiting to get our tickets (we already had paid for the trip and had our licenses). The boat was very full (49 people), there were only two deckhands working with the captain, and enough yellowtail were biting to keep them really busy. At least one deckhand got cranky at times, and the "regulars" locked up the good spots on the stern before we dropped anchor, leaving about half the passengers without much opportunity to be in a good position to catch a yellowtail. There wasn't much instruction provided for rigging and fishing for yellows (or any other fish biting, like ocean whitefish), the regulars were cold toward the newbies, and neither captain nor crew really made an effort to help half the passengers get on some fish. At the end of the day, maybe half the people got a fish (really nice yellowtail, to be sure, just like every other boat out there that day), and some of the regulars got 2 or more fish. I pushed my way onto the stern a couple times, but did not enjoy the crowds or frequent tangles, and certainly could not see taking a youngster back there to push his way onto the stern rail with the "serious" regulars. Things that were good: 1) Punky, in the galley; 2) Daniel, a volunteer junior deckhand (about 12 yrs old) that did his best to help the other kids on-board catch a fish; 3) The captain seemed genuinely apologetic that we had such a disappointing trip and a run-in with a deckhand; 4) Seemed to be a little cheaper than boats at Cisco and Ventura Sportfishing (but you'll have to spend another $2 for a gunny sack...really). Suggestions to make things better (things I have commmonly experienced on other boats/landings): 1) An adequate number of experienced, confident, helpful deckhands; 2) Before we get to our destination, provide a briefing/demo on our target species, how to rig, and recommended fishing techniques; 3) When 1/3 to 1/2 of the passengers are getting skunked (or even catching a 10-inch whitefish or 8-inch calico), either strongly encourage a rotation system to give everyone a chance at the best rail locations or spend the last hour at a hot spot for species that are easier to catch. 4) Keep an adequate amount of bait in the forward baitwell so that those of us on the side rails can get baited quickly. A couple other notes: there are few seats inside or out, and the head was in poor shape, but that's not a big deal to me. read more

Very disappointed in my experience with Hooks. I reserved spots for my son and I on an overnight trip leaving at 10PM. We spent the day preparing for the trip, buying stuff we needed, planning out all the details, talking about what to expect, all the things that makes a 10 year old very excited about his first big fishing trip. The drive to the Harbor is an hour from our house. We got there at 9PM. Aside from all the excitement, there was a LOT of logistics to sort out to make the trip work on our schedule. But when we arrived the guy at the desk said we were not on the list and they had booked the boat full so there was no way we could go. After some complaining, he found our names on a list for the following day, which was NOT what we had booked. No accommodations were offered, barely even an apology. Just some excuse about the guy who took the reservation being new and inept. I had even talked to two different people when I made my reservation. They knew we were coming out today. None of that mattered, we were just sent away. Through the heavy cloud of disappointment on the long drive home my son and I talked about how a company with integrity would have handled the situation differently. We talked about what a negative effect it has on a business when customers are treated poorly. Didn't make up for anything, but gave us something to talk about. I promised him I would book another trip with a better company. I will never use Hooks for anything again. I will never recommend them to anyone. read more

Rock Fish , Rock Fish , Rock Fish... MMMMMM GOOD! If you like to fish the ocean and you love fish go to Captain Hooks! 3/4 day trips are my thing.The 3/4 day trips are on the Island Spirit ($60.00),she is a nice size (65' x 22') and she fits about 60 people. Captain Greg Ewart and his crew are the best around! Your morning starts at the landing where you are all ways greeted with a smile and any answer or tackle you need. Then you are greeted by the nicest most accommodating crew in the "rock fishing capital of the world". If you are lucky your trip includes the most beautiful scenery in the world too.Hell, even if you don't like to fish the trip to the Channel Islands is worth it . BUT if you know Ventu/Oxnard , you know about our overcast days. Greg KNOWs where the fish are, you will ALL WAYS come home with a full bag of fish. They also fellet them for you if you want (cheap). Johnny and Jeff are so cool and all ways happy to help and give you a good laugh. The Galley is the best too,comfort food of the gods! The people on the trips are usually return customers and are all ways allot of fun to spend the day with. I all ways leave feeling like I made a new friend, and have spent the day with old friends. I all ways come home tired and happy , but ready to BBQ that sweet meat and tell my children about my day out fishing and for the month or two I BBQ the fish i caught and remember that day...Good times! Went out on a 3/4 Tuesday trip. 19 people caught 12 yellows and a bunch of Bonita. Skipper did a great job and so did most of crew. However one crew member continually tried to fish off stern making it more crowded and prone to line tangles. Then he made things worse when he lit up his cigarette and blew smoke in all of our faces. He was obviously money fishing (sell back on shore) and not interested in helping paid customers. He almost knocked me down when I went to get a fresh bait. Oh, watch out for galley gouging. Make sure you bring plenty of small bills to pay tab as galley cook uses the "No Change" ruse to fatten his tips. Also take your own burlap sack to avoid the $2 a sack charge. Advice - if your not making enough money charge more but don't rip off your customers. read more

I didn't catch much in terms of lobster but that's my own bad luck. Everyone was friendly, the boat was clean, the food was well stocked and I always had a fresh cup of hot coffee ready when I wanted it. Deckhand was VERY helpful and taught me all about hoop netting. I will be booking a private charter in the next few weeks to try again... with 15 of my closest friends. The pricing is the best in the harbor and you can't beat the customer service. read more

They should be called CROOKS, not Hooks. The Coroloma took us out on a beautiful day. Not much luck with the fish but we all had a good time regardless. Staff was friendly and very attentive. I was the lucky jackpot winner for biggest fish that day. There was 28 people on board and $10 buy in for the jackpot. I was informed that the jackpot was $120. The crew asked me how I wanted to handle the winnings. They offered me passes to come again on another day in lieu of the cash. I passed on the offer and opted to just take the cash. Back at the dock as the crew is sending passengers on their way and thanking us all for coming I patiently waited for the prize that hadn't yet been delivered to me. When I had to ask for it they seemed shocked that I actually wanted to keep it. They said they thought I had said I wanted to donate it to the boat. I was confused where that assumption came from but misunderstandings happen. They said they would have to retrieve it from the captain and I would have to wait. The Captain seemed really put out that he had to go get it. When he handed it to me he told me that its customary to let the boat keep the winnings as the crew only makes minimum wage. He wasn't happy with me that I preferred to take the cash instead of passes and tried to convince me that the passes where the better deal in my favor. I thanked him for the offer, took the cash minus a generous tip and left with a bad taste in my mouth. As a customer service based employee myself I am well aware of the etiquette of tipping and tip well. It would have been nice to just be handed the winnings and let me tip the crew instead of feeling scammed and pressured. After conferring with friends within the industry I was told this is NOT standard ops for any fishing operation and that particular Captain has a reputation. The owners were not happy to hear what had happened on their vessel and did offer to make it up to me in any way. Although i have yet to hear or see any gesture of that but they assured me this would never happen again. I would hope not but I wanted to post this as an alert for people who may not know better. read more

Caraloma trip today was a big disappointment. The captain was rude and inexperienced. Wasted a lot of time looking for barracuda and the group we went with all pretty much went home with empty bags. The best thing about this trip was punky for sure. She was very helpful and friendly, just too bad it hasn't rubbed on the crew. We came from Orange County looking forward to trying out a new spot and this just wasn't worth the time or money spent. read more

My boyfriend and our young nephew went out on the Coroloma today. The fishing trip itself was pretty uneventful. However, when they were on their way back and it was time to clean the fish, not only did a bunch of fish somehow go missing, a fee was paid to have my nephews fish cleaned, my nephew was handed a whole fish he didn't even catch instead. No money was returned and nothing in the way of an apology was attempted. As far as service, this was the worst by far. Never would we recommend nor ever charter this boat again. On a side note, another fisherman caught a beautiful big yellow tail that also went missing. He was beyond mad. read more

My daughter and I have been fishing with these guys for years and we always have a great time! We always catch more fish than we know what to do with. The crew is beyond helpful and the captain is very knowledgeable about the best areas for catching specific types of fish. We go out on the New Hustler and we always have a great time but all of the boats out of this landing are amazing. The crew are always around to help with tangles and they work hard to make sure everyone is catching fish and having a good time. I read some reviews that said the crew was lazy and I honestly don't know what crew they are talking about... these guys go above and beyond the call of duty and they are constantly working hard and helping everyone. We've tried other charters & it just isn't as much fun as it is with this crew. We won't go out with anyone else, can't wait to go out and catch more fish! read more

The only reason I left one star out is because of the fishing which was slow. Only three white seabass came up and by very fortunate anglers. The seabass were not running but if they were it would have been a perfect day. The crew was awesome! Ryan and Marshall and the whole crew were very helpful and very pro. I had a great day fishing yesterday on the Coroloma. The crew was great, they were very helpful and nice. Everyone who worked on the boat worked hard and had a great attitude. The deck hands were quick to get our lines untangled. The girl who worked in the galley kept the good food and cold beer flowing. The captain was working hard to get us on the fish. I was actually surprised about how cool everyone was. I got a little sea sick but was still able to catch a lot of fish. We also saw lots of Dolphins, giant sunfish and whales. I would definitely recommend to take some seasickness medicine before the trip. I would recommend this boat trip to anyone who wants to have fun and catch fish. This was my second attemp at trying to go fishing on the Coroloma and both times was given excuses as to why the boat was not going to go out. The first time not enough people which was understandable because it was a last minute thing. The second time I made reservations for 5-31-14 a month before,I took a day off of my job and then on 05-30-14 received a call at about 430pm saying that the boat was having mechanical problems and because it was late in the day and with limited availability on parts, the Coroloma will not be going out (sounds good). Never once did I get an apology, no discount on any future trip just the trip is being cancelled. Imagine how it feels when you look at the fish report to find out that the Coroloma went out with 23 anglers. I have come to the conclusion that the Coroloma is a bunch of liars and they want to pick and choose who they take. It sucks that people plan well in advance to go on these trips and that Coroloma has no regard for what people do just to go fishing. Your customer service is horrible and lacking a good business ethic. I'll end this review by saying this to anyone that is interested if you are thinking about going fishing on this boat don't they probably will cancel. There are plenty of other boats that are great like Channel Islands sport fishing Oxnard sport fishing Ventura Sportfishing. To the Coroloma I'll close by saying this People choose to do business with you because they want to, not because they have to. We can always find others that are doing the same thing offer a similar product. It's the personal connection that makes the difference. read more

Went out today on the Caroloma. When we were motoring out of the harbor, our captain gave us his "gameplan" on getting us fish. He also explained and talked us through every stop we made. He told us the depth, where the fish were, which side to fish and how to rig tor them. We caught some baitfish and after some unsuccessful attempts at quality rockfish, we went to try for lingcod. To make a long story short...we caught some nice lings and everyone had a great trip. I recommend this boat AND crew to everyone. I have had bad experiences at Cisco's and Ventura landings over the last two weeks and will NEVER go with either of them. HOOKS... hooked me. I'd like to add that somebody brought a banana on board and as soon as he was convinced to throw it overboard..... BAM..BOOM... HOOK UP!!! See you guys next week. read more

I came down to Oxnard for work for a few weeks and took a charter on sunday. I live in central ca and take boats out of Montery all the time. This was one of the best trips I have ever been on. I went out on the Coroloma. The deck hands Marshall and Austin were very egaer to help me with seting up my gear, helping with tangles and getting fish in the boat. The galley girls Jessica and Punkie were a lot of fun. Great food and always asking if they could bring me something food or drink, so that I could keep fishing. At one point I went up to the piolt house and talked with Captian Chris, he was very nice in welcomeing me up there and showing me what he dose. The fishing was GREAT. I cuaght 5 red snappers and a grouper, plus 2 lingcod (but they werent big enough). Overall I would say that if you are a frist timer or have been out befrore on party boats or fishing this is the boat for you. read more

The crew is what moved this up from one star. The galley wench was great and would go around and see if anyone needed anything. This was our first time and the deck hands really hooked us up. They took time to set us up and made sure we were able to catch fish and have a good time. The thing that drags this down is the Coroloma's anemities, actually I wouldn't consider a sink to wash your hands an anemity but a necessity. After fishing, going to the bathroom, touching bait and who knows what and you can't wash your hands before you eat lunch? How do you wash the fish guts off before you eat a burger down below?
