Great course...do NOT try to walk it! There is no "flat" terrain in Hood River...it's in the Gorge, which means the Columbia River is at the bottom and the land is sloped towards it. Golf is hard enough without having to hike up and down dirt/rock cart paths to the next hole. With that said, it's the best deal compared to Elk Ridge and Indian Creek (it is more hilly and narrow than these two)...a hidden gem. The greens are a little slow, but once you know just adjust. It also plays longer than what it says since there are some carry holes and well, half the holes are uphill . Play it when it's dry...once the weather turns, no more carts on the back due to slippery conditions...and they are closed December-January. If you need an adult beverage stop in at Toppy's before teeing off. read more

Rude woman apparently hates kids. Lectures me not to allow my grandson to drive the golf cart. I said we have no problem following the rules. She then continued the rude lecture about how kids tear up the golf cart & course & only play in the sand traps. I said lady if you treat people rude & like a__holes, then you're gonna get an a__hole response. Typical"Karen" we were guilty before we even tee'd off. Avoid this place like the plague. There isn't one single marker on the fairways to note yardage, but plenty of signs warning about the cart driving routes around greens and tee boxes. I rate this place NO STARS! read more

I can't believe anyone would give this place less than 5 stars. I played here on Wednesday with a business partner and I thought it was possibly the best value for a golf course I've ever seen. Two players for 18, cart fee, and a hat was $140. To put that in prospective the guest fee per player for 18 at my home course is $125 with the cart fee, and we don't have the beautiful views. Folks in the club house were very nice and hospitable, and I love the old school bar at the turn. This is now one of my favorite public courses. Will definitely pack the sticks next time I'm out that way and play another round. Great time and beautiful, challenging course. read more

"Spaulding, I Don't Think We're in Bushwood Anymore" After reading some reviews of the Hood River Golf course (also known as "The Old Course", and, affectionately, "Hillbilly"), I was struck by the dichotomy of views surrounding my favorite place to play the game. If you are looking for a genteel atmosphere, groomed greens, watered flora, a well-stocked pro shop, and a professionally courteous staff, Indian Creek is probably your ticket to ride. The restaurant, Divots, is a respectable 19th hole. So why do I play Hillbilly more often than Indian Creek? 1) I like the staff. Beverly is a real love; the rest of the crew can be a bit...brusque if you fall afoul of the rules -- some written, some not. But as long as you are courteous to and considerate of them as well as your fellow golfers, you will quickly become a fan of theirs, and they of you. Well, maybe not quickly. Would you settle for eventually? 2) The course has something for everyone. The front nine is well-designed, relatively docile and can be enjoyed by most levels of golfers. The back nine looks and plays like it was designed by Carl Spackler and Paul Bunyan while stoned to the bejeezus-belt on the former's favorite hybrid (i.e. Kentucky Bluegrass, Featherbed Bent, and Northern California Sensimilia). In one round I lost more balls on the 13th hole than I did all year playing the front nine. If you're relatively athletic you can definitely walk the front nine. Don't even think about going to the back nine without a golf cart, GPS, overnight supplies, bear spray, and a next-of-kin notification. 3) Your fellow golfers are mostly Hood River chill and Oregon nice. You'll see more pickup trucks than anything else. Most of the clientele are local tradespeople who don't have a lot of time to waste. So the pace is pretty brisk. Slower players will almost invariably let you play through. 4) It's inexpensive relative to most other places in the area. 5) Tabby's is a great 19th hole. If you leave there hungry, you're probably a hyena with a tapeworm. At one time they had a great breakfast. I wish they would bring it back. read more

Its a great course with varying terrain and great views. I have taken my son (11) here several times. The staff is friendly enough.

First time playing here with my two sons who are learning to golf. Quite rude staff who drove up and brusquely told us to speed up despite having picked up balls at times and let people play through all of whom seemed enthusiastic to have a couple of 12-year-olds out learning to golf. He was so rude my one son says he doesn't want to golf again. Clearly they don't want kids here which is ironic since they have a youth rate. We won't be back. read more

Apparently it's IMPOSSIBLE for my 4 year old to sit in the middle of a golf cart with my husband and I. They made us buy a whole extra golf cart because my 4 year old can't sit in a cart with us. While it's extremely possible and much safer for her to sit in between 2 adults, it's IMPOSSIBLE according to the idiot asshole employee with the porn stache and permanent scowl and attitude problem. This course is as beautiful as it is challenging! The pro shop is cozy and they are welcoming, sharing the course history, and how to navigate to front & back. Front 9 is 100 years old and the back nine is almost 30. The dogs Cody & Tucker are living their best dog life. read more

Worst golf experience ever!!! I should've read the reviews before I booked a tee time with the lady at this golf course. As someone who is a member of a country club back home I specifically chose the public golf course because I want a low-key Casual game for my brothers and some friends. We have golfed on multiple courses throughout Oregon. It's the usual pay your money respect the course respect other players and enjoy yourself. This was not the case at this golf course. I have never been treated so blatantly rude by someone my entire life. From the first words out of her mouth I felt like she did not want us there and did not like us for some reason "We usually don't see people like you out here. Did you mean to go to Indian creek? " . I did not know how to interpret that. Having six people who all golf regularly we Know how to keep the game going and not clog up the whole fairway and slow down play for others. She then told us that this was a old golf course and we needed to be respectfully it. Multiple times she stated that we needed to stay in our party of three and we could not play together as a group of six because of others on the course. This was a Thursday morning at 10 AM and there were three cars in the parking lot and we never saw a Single person in the entire time we were out on the course. While all 6 of us with our 4 golf bags were setting up to tee off at the first hole she hopped in her red car and drove up to us and stated that we needed to hurry up to not to drink beer not purchased from them. She then immediately drove off to some man in another cart and pointed at us. He then followed us for 2 holes just watching us. Do not go to this course. The people running it have no sense of customer service and believe treating people poorly. GO ELSEWHERE !!! read more

I grew up in the Hood River Valley and live in Portland now. There is no way I will ever golf at the old course again. I was charged for golf cart damage (small crack in the bumper) that was not caused by me or the course. After reading the reviews, this has happened to multiple people. If you are willing to risk playing this course, take a video of your golf cart. These people are fraudsters and deserve to be driven out of business. read more

The lower ratings on this page seem a little unfair. The grounds are well taken care of. The golf carts are in great shape. We were reluctant to visit based off the overall rating. The "old" golf course in Hood River, where I grew up, was like a good friend to me. We spent a lot of time together when I was growing up. It contributed greatly to who I am today. I make it a point to try to make a pilgrimage almost every year to say "hi" to my old friend. It made me feel good. Today I came up to visit. My course in Gresham is closed this week for aeration, and, the weather is wonderful. Seemed like a good opportunity to visit. A nice person offered to join me. I enjoyed his company. On the 6th fairway a pull cart I rented fell apart. The bottom lost it supports. So, my playing partner offer me an opportunity to ride in his cart for the remaining 3 1/2 holes. We set the broken pull cart aside and finished the nine hole round. When we came back to get the cart, in was gone. We correctly assumed that a ground crew person retrieved it. Upon getting to my car the "lady" proceeded to give me a tongue lashing about leaving the cart there, and how bad a person I was for not pausing my round and walking the broken cart back to the clubhouse. In addition, she insisted I pay her for using my partner's cart. Then she attacked my integrity. After not being able to reach her husband she demanded I give her $20.00. So, I did; after I explained my history with the course and the fact that I am a consistent return customer. Next comes her relating the hard work they have put into the course and how I dont understand what they are under to keep the course in condition with "only six of us". So, so much for an enjoyable few moments with my close childhood friend. I will never return to play ever again. I am quite sad. Very sad. read more

This place doesn't even deserve one star. From the moment you arrive, it's rude rude rude. We are astonished that this course is still in business. We will only be golfing Indian Creek from now in. We are mid 50's normal couple who like to take our out of town guests golfing and the owner is an Jack-hole who doesn't like people. He's not at all pleasurable or accommodating in any way. Since the owner didn't allow me to reply I'll make another post. As seen by other reviews, the management structure and employee choice is back room Walmart standards at best. Hopefully by now the company has come to terms with reality and replaced all staff, because from the minute we got there we were disrespected as guests in every manner. You not only couldn't pay us enough to come back, but the fact your course is still operational blows more minds than previous Nobel prize winners. We have never had a single issue with any other course besides yours, and the other reviews on this site speak to it. I feel sorry that you have to defend yourself against every review, and again framing our group as "intoxicated" to try and mitigate our interaction. This is an interesting course especially the back nine. While the course is not as immaculate as some courses, the layout is one of the most interesting I have played. This course reminds me of Triggs in Providence RI which is a Donald Ross course. The bones of the course are really something. The front nine is a nice track. If you play from the blues, the eight hole is a fantastic design. Tight tee shot between trees over a pond. A solid tee shot will leave with around 120 yd to the green. If you are a high handicapper retire after nine because the back nine will do you in. The back nine has the most interesting and difficult holes I have played. Unlike courses that have the fake manufactured feel to them, the back nine was clearly carved out of the land making due with the natural contours. The number 1 stoke a hole, a par five is a bear. Around a 170 yd carry leads to a narrow fairway. The second shot is a good 165 to 170 up hill. The third shot is to a green tucked down on the right. This one difficult hole. The 16th hole is a 377 yd straight down hill shot. I played a 5 wood and was left with a 90 yd shot to green. Bring the A game for this course. The price is very inexpensive. read more

Great Golf Course!! Not stuffy at all, the course manager in the pro shop is a great guy and a lot of fun to joke with. I've showed up in jean shorts twice and he's let our group have a great time on both occasions. The course is challenging and the Crows Nest Bar and restaurant is on the same property. You can have a real nice meal and a last daddy soda after you swing the sticks!! As a local, it's a nice place to stay under the radar, have a great time and do so with a non judgy community base!! I went to the Hood River Golf Course twice while on vacation. One of the worst golf experiences I have had. The owner of this golf course and the owner's employees are very rude. Not only are they rude, but they charged my credit card $200 for damages to a cart that I did not do...two weeks after the fact. On the first day, my family and I golfed 9 holes and we had two golf carts. We only had two golf carts because they wouldn't let my brother-in-law walk the course. We returned both golf carts just they way we received them. The next day, we went back to the golf course and they accused us of bending the frame of one of the golf carts, odd because that should affect the drivability of the carts. After a very aggressive conversation with the employee I was assured that nothing would come of the encounter, once I suggested that this was some kind of scam. Then without any kind of notice, I see that they took 200 dollars out of my account without my knowledge. The owner told me he can charge me what ever he wanted and there was nothing I could do about it, I should just be happy he didn't charge me more. After a heated discussion from a distance that I would not be able to do anything about this issue I have decided to let karmic justice deal with this one. A great coarse undermined by disrespectful, rude and alarmingly unprofessional staff that seems to be always looking for a way to take advantage of and steal from costumers. read more

My husband and daughter went here today. My husband golfs often, and since my daughter is out for summer break wanted to ride along with him. Never again will my husband ever play here again. They charged him $25 dollars for her to simply sit in the cart next to him, and the woman in the pro shop lectured him on having a child with him. What kind of service is this? On top of that she told him that she was going to charge him the premium rate to play since he was bringing her along. We will never return. read more

They charge to bring dogs, tell you to leave them on the leash and they can run behind the cart and then some dip shit follows you around on a cart like the golf police and changes the rules. If you're wondering if it's possible to walk your dog on a leash while golfing, it's not! We golfed there probably 30 times last year, after the golf police spoke to us like we were beneath him, he lost our business for good. The staff is sloppy, unfriendly. We switching to disc golf. 3 star course. There is a lot of clover on this course. I grew up on a lot of muni tracks so I know how to handle crummy fairways, so no worries. The greens really had no consistency to them. Some were hard, some were spongy, some were soaking wet. I think that some of the holes are very old and have steeply sloped greens from that era. The back 9 has some roller coaster ride holes. #12 and #13 are insane. I was killing the driver so they were fun, but if you aren't hitting it solid, the back 9 could be a bear. The back nine is best with a cart since the hills are large and plentiful and there are some interesting ravine crossings. read more

This course would be spectacular if they maintained it. I have lost my ball in the dandelions several times. The layout is awesome; it has views of Mt Hood and lots of trees. The greens need to be kept up better; they are very soft and mushy. I was there recently and heard they have a new "Director of Golf" and things will be improving this summer. I am looking forward to it since it is my favorite course in the Gorge. Even though I am not giving a very high rating I would still recommend playing it. read more

This is a beautiful golf course with spectacular views, and a quiet, peaceful country setting. The golf course is in excellent condition do to the impeccable maintenance practices and tireless efforts of a first rate grounds crew and a dedicated owner. I love golfing here and would recommend this course to anyone looking for a relaxing round on a first rate golf course. This course has come a long way in the last 12 months. It is obvious the owners have spent a lot of time and money improving the course. Fairways are mowed and greens are in great condition. I play this course often because it is much less expensive than other courses in the area, it is nice to see the course improve as much as it has in a very short time. read more
