I'm a new student to the area and was looking for grub after moving in all my stuff. Me and my new housemate walked about and found 2 chinese takeaways. This one caught our eye as a) it was busier than the other one so that is a good sign b) they did banana fritters which is my favourite!
The place looked very humble, they use an old fashion style hand-written menu and the prices seemed pretty reasonable. I could smell the yummy food when I walked in! Maybe because I was hungry! I ordered the duck with pineapple, some egg fried rice and banana fritters. My housemate is a vege and noticed there wasn't a vegetarian option on the menu.
The owner seemed very friendly and it was obvious it was a family run business. It's also good to see Chinese people cooking Chinese food. :)
We asked if there was a vege option and he said he could accommodate any of the menu options to make it vegetarian. The only thing they didn't do is Tofu dishes, which was a disappointing for my housemate. However, he offered to do us some vege fried rice with vege curry. We got a few cans of coke and prawn crackers too.
We waited about 20 minutes, watching the TV. Altogether, it was about £20 for both of us - bargain!
Starving, we rushed home and digged into our takeaway and OMG - it was so delicious! The rice was really tasty, not greasy or hard; tasted fresh. My duck was awesome and plentiful. I couldn't finish it as I wanted room for my fritter (mmmmmmmm). My housemate fell in love with the curry and now goes back almost every night for it! :)
Big thumbs up!
*Update: We tried out the other takeaway down the road and it wasn't as good. The price and the owner was fine but the food was considerably less fresher and better quality. The meat for example was tiny little shreds whereas in the Hong Kong Takeaway, we got massive fresh chopped bits of it. My boyfriend also loves the sweet and sour chicken at HKT. read more
