A perfect choice for my final meal in Bath, Hong Kong Bistro is right down the street from the Bath Spa Rail Station. Several tables of Chinese people enjoying their food, I hope it's not offensive to point that out, because I usually see it as a sign of good Chinese food. Service was excellent, though I had to feel bad for the lone woman working the restaurant, taking orders, running drinks, bringing plates of food, cleaning tables. She was seriously hussling! Excellent portion of truly delicious food, I went with the Chef Special Noodles, which was a large pile of noodles with thin slices of chicken and beef and pork, plus a couple of prawns ("shrimp" in American). Veggies were crisp and tasty and the sprinkle of toasted sesame seeds really set it off. They had several bottles of win on their list and a half-dozen or so bottles of spirits on the wall, plus a few different beer choices. With a Tiger beer, a great deal for just under £7. Not super authentic but good enough. The name is no longer Hong Kong Bistro. It is East meets West. The service is a bit slow but friendly. We ordered beef with broccoli but they brought us pepper steak. It was good so we kept it. read more

I ate here pretty much every day when I was living up the street. Awesome, awesome chow mein. Plus, they have a mystery menu entirely in Chinese that they only give special customers. Some day, I will earn the right to be the person who gets that menu. Then I'll be embarrassed because I don't speak or read any Chinese. The service is great, although as they warn you, they bring out the meals as they are cooked so you might be sitting awkwardly for a while as your friends eat. They used to have this amazing old menu with a dessert called 'pineapple baby' on it that I never worked up the urge to order. From what I recollect, it's also open better hours than a majority of the stuff in Bath, so it's a great option when all the supermarkets are closed and you're bleakly contemplating the prospect of eating mushy peas and fish and chips after waiting in line behind drunken, indecisive, belligerent uni students. read more

Great Food at a Good Price (for Bath). Can not go wrong with the Chef Special Noodles - either pan fried egg noodles or in a soup with Udon Noodles. The helpings are generous so go with a good appetite. If you have room for a side - the crispy lamb is a must. A regular resturant for me. read more

Recently, at Bath's Hong Kong Bistro I was fortunate enough to chomp on a plate of Pad Thai. It was so wonderful that much like one would kick-start a gerbil with a brick, so it kick-started a train of thoughts that began with a reminiscence of a hotel in Thailand where I floundered about in the pool awaiting a seemingly-inevitable harpoon. My thoughts danced about a little further (pausing momentarily on a woman in Thailand who did something rather disturbing with a ping-pong ball for money) before finally settling on the idea that the only thing to make Bath's Hong Kong Bistro more authentic was for Bruce Lee to leap out of the kitchen and karate-chop me in the neck. It could, of course, easily be determined that the latter was not the most rational of the thoughts buzzing and pinging about in my head that day, particularly given that Pad Thai is not one of the mainstays of Chinese cuisine and that Bruce Lee is sadly long-dead. It was however, yet another dish from the Hong Kong Bistro that compelled my taste buds to dance a merry jig and swiftly despatch a memo to my tummy to inform it that it would soon be very happy indeed. I have visited the Hong Kong Bistro on more than one occasion, albeit only for lunch, and unlike making a visit to my bank, not once have I ever been so disappointed with the experience that I have pondered hurling through the door a wildly-shaken box of wasps. While Bath's Hong Kong Bistro does not necessarily pride itself on either its decor or its service, it would be fair to suggest that the reason is simply because it does not need to. There is nothing wrong with either thing, and I would describe both as simple and effective. Sure, I would not object to being hand-fed truffles by supermodels while I sat on the back of a small platinum horse, but this is not the place for such necessities. Bath's Hong Kong Bistro is more a canteen for quick, awesome food, service with an absence of French waiters being snotty, rude and stereotyped, and for daydreaming about Bruce Lee or the cartoon character, Hong Kong Phooey. In terms of price, it is roughly half as expensive as something that costs twice as much. My Pad Thai was, for example, half the price of almost six sandwiches from Waitrose, but in terms of value-for-money, unless someone shows me somewhere I can buy a clone of Cheryl Cole for thirty quid, there is little comparison in Bath. On the whole, to conclude and at the end of the day an' that (know what I mean, innit?) Bath's Hong Kong Bistro is an excellent place for lunch. I may actually go there for dinner one day too. You should visit them very soon. read more

Great food and lovely staff. I had the Pad Thai which I can recommend. My wife had the Chicken Chow Mien which she also enjoyed. Would definitely go here again. As other reviewers mentioned, it's good value for Bath and ideally located close to the train station. read more

Myself and my girlfriend frequently come here for a bite to eat. Inside it is basic but presentable, the staff are always helpful and there is always many oriental people (i guess they are students) eating here which must mean that the food is of good quality, which we think it is. The portion sizes are generous, none of this minimalistic dining nonsense here! The prices are what sets it apart from the rest of the field though. Put it this way, in other restaurants we have been to, a starter each, main course each and at least 3 drinks comes to around £50 on average, at the Hong Kong Bistro it comes to little over £25. If you're on the hunt for a Chinese restaurant in Bath, then Hong Kong Bistro is a pretty good option. The service is excellent, the food is tasty and everything about it is generally very good value. It's a million times better than that buffet-style Chinese place located just down the road in the Kingsmead Leisure Complex - and at similar prices. The quality of the food is a lot better than a takeaway, but it's not the best Chinese fare I've tasted, though having said that, you'd be likely to pay a lot more for a finer dining experience than this. Good portions for the price you pay (as w/ any semi-fast Chinese restaurant). It is definitely a restaurant for the student budget and delivering mediocre food. This place was great! Visited Bath to do some casual travelling and we got hungry and Hong Kong Bistro popped up on Yelp so we gave it a go. Located at the bottom of Bath city centre is Hong Kong Bistro, a welcoming little oriental restaurant along the lines of Wagamama there are plenty of tables so no need to book although it gets pretty busy at lunchtimes with people heading their on their lunchbreaks. This is because the service is quick, polite and very good, they do the usual bring it when it's ready but to be honest most dishes arrive at the same time. There is lots of choice of rice and noodle dishes as well as soups and side orders (prawns in pastry with sweet chilli sauce is a personal favourite!) and usually about £5-7 per dish which is very good as you get generous portions. This place really took care of me when I visited Bath, especially the waiter in the front. I had visited after traveling for 15+ hours and he was really understanding about me being confused and indecisive. He got me water immediately. Beef chow fun was fine too, and he made sure it came out really fast. I came back the next day to order a milk tea and after making it, he asked me to try it first to see if I wanted anything changed about the taste. He also gave me a take out box so I can split my free hostel breakfast into two meals (was traveling on a budget). Then when he saw me confused about British coins, he really helped me out. I wanted to thank him personally before leaving but found that my train out was before the restaurant opens. This place has great service, maybe it's a matter of communication. read more

This is a decent restaurant for some decent, albeit overpriced, Chinese food. I would recommend takeout over sit in, mainly because the service is quite poor and the staff attitude leaves something to be desired. Inexplicably most of the staff seem to be eating in a corner all throughout dinner time as well (not a problem of course but tends to make the others busy during busy times). When I lived in Bath from 2005 - 2006 this was my favorite restaurant. Being from the States, I wanted comfort food and this place did a great job of meeting that need. The staff is very nice and would customize dishes for me since I was a daily customer. Potions were huge and the price was reasonable! Would eat there again if I ever visit Bath! read more

After moving to Bath from Melbourne, where you get a wide range of spectacular Asian cuisine, I was getting fed up of jacket potatoes and sandwiches for lunch. I saw this place when I was going to the bus stop; the menu was reasonably -priced, it had a variety of soup noodles, and as another reviewer said, there were Asian(probably Chinese )customers inside - always a good sign. I had wonton soup noodles, and although the veg was slightly overcooked and the soup flavour a little lacking depth,the wontons were full of bite and flavour, and the noodles were nice and springy. The FOH woman was a bit brusque with the taking and delivering of orders, and I was surprised not to be given a glass of water, which ought to be standard service everywhere. There was also no Chinese condiments on the table, and the slight unfriendliness of the server made me hesitate to ask. I will go back however, as the price is right and there are some other soup noodles I would like to try. It makes me miss Melbourne a tiny bit less anyway. read more
