I walked in this supermarket with 9 year old son looking for fish bait so we can go fishing. As we were walking to the checkout area. The cashiers were looking at us really weird. The way they were looking made us feel like we shouldn't have been there at all or my kind wasn't welcomed there. Nobody could speak English but said it in English smh. The looks and the vide from the cashiers honestly felt racist. I asked to speak to a manager and she was rude and didn't care about nothing I was talking about. This was my first experience dealing with racism from an Asian person and it's sad it happened at Hong Kong supermarket employees. I had to talk to my kid about racism after we got to the car because he had questions about what we just experienced. It's said to act that way but especially In front of a child. This place is absolutely filthy. The grocery baskets were sticky, I never even tried to touch the shopping carts. Once you turn right to go toward the beverages, you will discover this place is not kept up. The beverage refrigerators are in shambles. The produce area has very old and rotten produce. It looks like they trimmed the lettuce and the packages. Sometimes. The area where the tofu stinks. The only saving grace about to place is that the freezers are new. And looks like a grocery store where the people don't care, and just toss the product into the display. Such an amazing selection of Asian food and necessities. Fresh seafood selection is awesome. The only small recommendation I have is be ready to use Google Translate or prepare to spend your time figuring out where the stuff is that you want, I think most of the employees are not native English speakers, but it just adds to the charm honestly. I've visited this store before, but really only for specific items that I walked it, got, and left. This last weekend I actually shopped the store. I mean, I obviously went for specific items, but I took my time and enjoyed shopping the store. First of all, there is a distinct seafood smell that permeates the store. I'm not complaining about this, just making sure you know. They have a pretty larger seafood section, a lot of it is fresh, at the back of the store, so this makes sense. Second of all, I wouldn't accuse this store of being so clean you can eat off the floor. In fact, let's not do that. Lets say it's a well establish and well used store. Now, in other news, I really loved the produce section. They have produce I've never seen in H-E-B, Kroger, or Randall's. Of course it's all Asian centered, and do I have to actually state that? Yes. Yes, I do. Why? Because people apparently need warning labels that tell them their coffee is hot; therefore, those same people. Red to be told that an Asian market centers their food selection on Asian cuisine. #justsayin There's an entire aisle devoted to dishes, one to cookery/bakery, one to noodles (I spent much time here, because, wonder of wonders, everything is labeled in some variety of the many Asian languages). The spice aisle is a wonder to the world. Buy all your spices here. Forever. I honestly can't say anything really bad, other than my disclaimers above--and those aren't so much bad as they are "good to know"'(you know, for those people who need to be told not to put soap in their eyes). Since Sophia C's review from 2010, the banh mi prices have jumped up a bit. The combination (3 different types of meat, butter mix, carrots, cucumbers, and jalapenos) is $3.50. There are other Vietnamese sandwich options like just vegetable for ~$2, but almost everyone goes with the combination! The same service counter also sells fresh roasted duck, quail, and pork. A few steps away are pre-packs of various Vietnamese items like spring rolls, sticky rice, tapioca starch dumplings, vermicelli with meat and veggies, and sweets of all sorts. Be sure to check this area out! Really interesting, and they bring in new batches of items throughout the day :) I'm no Vietnamese food connoisseur, but the food packs taste great and make a quick and cheap lunch! This an okay place to get Asian food stuffs for a great price. They have a wide variety of vegetables, snacks, frozen foods, noodles, sauces, and meats, etc. They have a small bakery comprised of baked goods not made on the property and a stand that sells roast duck and bahn mi sandwiches that looks pretty legit. They sell chopsticks, knives, and Asian silverware and plates you would see in an Asian restaurant as well as woks and large pots. You can find those cool sodas that you have to pop the top in order to drink them, lol. They have tanks of live fish and lobsters and have butchers to assist you with their fresh meat offerings and seafood. The main drawback to this establishment is cleanliness and freshness of their vegetables. The place could use a really good scrubbing! Also, they have really fresh vegetables for the most part. The usual suspects like tomatoes, carrots, bell peppers, and cabbage are typically good. However, sometimes they have bins of rotten and moldy onions or ginger or herbs, maybe fruit that they continue to sell as if someone is going to buy them and you have to combat fruit flies to get to the fresh goods. Those can just be thrown away instead of keeping them there. Also, I love, love, love pan de sal! I have purchased a bag of moldy pan de sal from the bakery that I didn't return because they were cheap and I felt they wouldn't reimburse me or allow me to get a fresh pack ( my own thoughts, I don't know if that would be the case). I did go on one occasion to purchase some shrimp chips and pan de sal and did a thorough inspection and found 90% to be moldy. I told one of the workers who told me to notify the cashier who told me to notify the worker..............so I just left. They pass out samples too from time to time. Super sad that the store on Gulf Freeway shut down and I had to go here. I grew up in a 3rd world country and used to the smells of a typical wet market but this place takes the cake. The stench is just unbearable. If you're able to hold your breath, then take a left and head straight to the sandwich area and order some Vietnamese sandwich quick lol! When I first walked in it was extremely cold and smelled like fish, but I was used to the smell of fresh fish. They have a wide variety of fresh fruits, and vegetables of all different kinds. People were so friendly and nice. The cashier was nice, and kind she greeted me with a smile and asked how I was doing. I spent two hours talking to a Jamaican lady serving Jamaican food to the customers of the Asian market. After reading the good reviews about the 'famous yummy' banh mi I had to try it myself and yes it was very well good. I had got the meatball bahn mi and it was really good. I loved the taste of cilantro in every bite, very crisp and fresh. Great supermarket, I will be coming back for their huge persimmons for my grandma because she loves persimmons, and for their jackfruit. I gave them 3 stars because I haven't fully experienced the whole store yet. My mum used to take me to this store when I was younger, but I haven't been since. read more

I'm a regular here. They always have great priced and good quality seafood, hard to find peppers, fruit and veggies. They also have the imitation crab meat that does not have shell fish, which is very hard to find. Their blue crab, crawfish and shrimp are HUGE. There are times that I don't wish to take the drive to Seabrook so I pick up a little something, something from here. The staff doesn't speak much English, but they are always helpful and friendly. You may have to write down what you are looking for, but they will try their very best to help. I bet you are guessing with all of the positive things I have to say "why the 3 stars?"...OMG the smell is GOD awful. Been coming for so many years, all the time. Staff always friendly and the check out ladies would chat happily thru the years. Loved the banh mi, pork loin from the left side butcher counter, jarred sauces, nuts, produce especially the boxed mangos. Bought spring roll ingredients including shrimp. Got home and immediately started preparing, and the shrimp smelled like a mix between strong rotten seafood + bleach. It was horrific. Took it back, with my receipt right then. Suddenly, the ladies I chatted with for years all of a sudden didn't know English. Couldn't understand me. I asked for a refund, and after some minutes of their confused looks they pointed to a handwritten sign "all meat and seafood sale final" OK so then I asked if i could exhange it for another product. If I could give this place a 0 star, I would. I've been to this grocery for years. Every time I came in the store, it always has this very very disturbing smell and for years they never try to make it better. The last 2 times I went there, both times I got stuffs that went bad. First it was the coconut, the whole box was bad, I tried couple and had diarrhea for 2 days. The very last time I went there for some egg noodle. Got home both bags went bad, moldy! I had to throw away and couldn't get money back because I did not keep my receipt. Well, i went to get Mochi ice cream and fruit jelly, and well pad thai noodles. I was so amazed at how many different types of noodles they had! The have so much stuff and varieties of asian stuff! (Except mochi ice cream brands) If there is something asian you can't find anywhere, I'm sure they have it, The reason I didn't rate higher is because when I was going to check out, I noticed several baby roaches crawling around ON TOP of the scanner!! I'll admit, if it wasn't for my boyfriend and a patient that comes into my job, I would have never set foot into a Hong Kong market; but I'm glad I did. For starters, the store smells horrible!! I'll chalk it up to them selling live seafood and some other exotic things of nature. I came looking for some cookies (shame) that a patient had brought for me and my boyfriend came looking to get a good deal on some blue crab. We scored on both! Again, I would have never thought I could get Belgian cookies nor live crab at a Hong Kong market. The crab were $1.90/lb and we got some HUGE crab to boil. So, if you don't feel like driving to Seabrook for seafood, this is a great alternative. They also sell other food items that were relatively cheap, such as oxtails and different cuts of meat, so I won't be opposed to getting my oxtails here the next time I feel like smothering some. Another thing I loved was that the staff actually spoke decent English. Sometimes it's hard to convey certain things when you have a language barrier going on, but we all understood each other fairly well. I'm so glad I stepped out of the box and went to a Hong Kong market. I can get my nose out of the air a tad. read more

The grocery store itself is just like every other Asian grocery store, but the reason why this place gets 5 stars is because of the banh mi shop inside. Ever since I was young, this has always been THE BEST banh mi sandwich place I've ever been to. Even the places in Houston Chinatown cannot beat Hong Kong's version of banh mi. They put so much meat and veggies in each sandwich. Some places add too much soy sauce, but this place puts just enough for flavor. The service is fast. I would know. My family has ordered 14 banh mi sandwiches from this place before because it was just that good, and they made them very quickly. Great price! This is an unassuming Chinese food market, nestled in a neighborhood I am often in for work. I have recently grown weary of western fast food, I went in to the asian market for hopes of respite. On my way in I noticed people eating Vietnamese sandwiches (Banh Mi), I was saved! I snaked my way around the store, and found the place in the left corner. Ordered a special sandwich for a scant $2.50, because everyone in front of me was. Went and picked up a bag of shrimp chips, a soda and was out the door for under $5. The sandwich was delicious, although I recommend grabbing a few napkins if you plan on eating on the road, as I ended up wearing a little of the juice. This is definitely the place I will be visiting for lunch when I am out in this area! read more

Our family do not really come to shop here often but when we do, it's just for little things like picking up an onion or two, or some ramen. It's just a typical asian market, I do must admit it's a bit dirty. There's nothing wrong with it if you're coming to pick grocery and leave quick, but if you're trynna tour... This is a great place to pick up Asian groceries if you live in the Southeast Houston area. The location is convenient, not too far from I-45 and surrounded by other similar businesses and restaurants. A small setback is that Saturday mornings they used to have fresh cha siu bao delivered but have now discontinued to supply. read more

This place is freezing inside so wear a sweater or hoodie. It does have a funny smell but that should not steer you away from all of the goodness packed in this store. From fresh fruit and veggies to fresh seafood and meat, all the spices and sides and much much more this is the place to go to. You can even buy scratch offs in this place. CRAZY!! I have been going to this store for years. The fiah section is the most frustrating. So you stand there and wait for somebody to acknowledge you or ask you what you want to buy. When there is somebody there. Not saying anything even if they don't speak English at least make gestures. Not just ignore the person. Do they really want to sell their fiah or not? So I went into here again yesterday and finally I went to the hot food to get one of those banh mi. It was around 4pm so there was no line. I tried asking the little lady there if I had to pay at the station and she couldn't understand, so I had to wait until someone came over and told me about these amazing sandwiches. They suggested the meatballs and they were only $3 so I got two, and took them home. The smell was so amazing in the car I tried one in the car and had to stop the car to eat it. I got the meatball with all the works. I think the next time I am down in that area I will try the others too. read more

I will never go to this market again. The few times I have gone here, the people that work there have been incredibly rude. I tried to ask the guy in the butcher department a question and he screamed at me to go away and something else but I could understand him. There is a disgusting dead fish smell that slaps you right in the face when you walk in the door. I go to the Asian market down the street from this place.
