There were so many colors, textures, shapes, caves, cones, spatters, and life in this National Monument. Loved the hiking and views. We did the north crater trail starting away from the visitor and going about half way. There are some big hills walking in sand so it's not an easy trek and half way was enough. The views looking into the crater are awesome. The broken top loop trail gave you a more up close look at the vibrant vegetation. The first part is uphill but after it down and flat. We did the Indian Cave which had plenty of light. It does involve traversing rocks so be prepared. You'll need solid shoes. You need to get a stamp to go into the caves. Stop at the visitor center to answer 2 simple questions. My fav trail was the Inferno Cone viewpoint. The first part is steep but the views from the top are amazing. So worth it.

There's very little shade and heat radiates through the volcanic rock that is present throughout the monument. But in the spring and early summer and during the fall, it's a wonderful place to camp and it makes it so much more convenient to not have to rush through the monument because you have to drive somewhere else to spend the night. There's 42 sites to accommodate RVs, travel trailers, camper vans and tents. There's no electric, water or sewer connections, so camping is pretty basic. Drinking water spigots are located throughout the campground to fill jugs. No reservations are provided, so it's strictly first-come, first-served. While check-in is officially 2 p.m., rangers allowed campers to come in early to snag an open spot. The open campsites are easy to find: There's a receipt box under each campsite number. Payments are accepted for one day at a time and rangers remove the previous day's receipts early in the morning. So if there's an empty site without a receipt from that day, the campsite is available for snagging. National Park Service staff were friendly and a ranger suggested we drive in to the pull-through site we paid for the wrong way. That would allow our doors to open on the side looking out onto the rest of the campground instead of the hill behind it. That was very kind of her.

And a card fee Well for 13 nights I was charged 400 dollars. I'll let yall do the math on your own, it don't add up) tried running our card multiple times at the beginning of the month without even contacting us first or checking to see if we were even planning on staying, WiFi never works and when you ask them to fix it they just tell you everything's working on their end, maybe it's a problem with your tv. (Tv is a fairly new Roku Tv, bought last year never had issues connecting it before.) . Had a never ending problem with mice here. (I caught 6 mice within less than 2 months.) And when loading up to leave, our water spigot wouldn't turn off. So I called to let them know that there was an issue and the lady was very rude and just told us "well our maintenance man will be a while before he gets there to fix it, its obviously been frozen and you signed an agreement that you'd wrap it to keep it from freezing, so you'll have to go and buy a T to shut it off, or I'll have to charge you for damages for flooding our park." (Which we did abide by our agreement, it was wrapped with heat tape and a foam insulter, our water didn't freeze up one time) Very rude and over all unprofessional. 10/10 DO NOT RECOMMEND.
