I walked in needing coffee. There were two ladies in front of me ordering so I thought I'd run to the restroom. I came out and the person behind the counter hadn't started taking the order of four people that came in after me. I rushed up to the counter and asked: can I order a coffee. She said yes, but asked me to come around in front of her (literally 2 steps away). I thought since I was already in the establishment, I could get my order in before other people started ordering. Nope...and they ordered very slowly. The person behind the counter could've just said this other lady was here first and taken my order. I was one person. The interior yielded a delectable display and an energetic husband and wife couple who seemed awfully enthusiastic about what they make. They offer a discount for everyone from locals to doctors (which I didn't bother to ask for). I ordered a Boston Cream cupcake, somewhat hesitant simply because I would not want the people of Boston to think that anyone outside of Boston likes them, but it was a soft, moist, and indulgent creation that barely lasted a minute in front of me. Their beverage options included a matcha latte flavored lightly with melon, a mouthwatering combination that lasted me for a while. They had a large gluten-free cupcake spread, not so much options for the vegans as far as I could tell. But other than suggesting that people trying to avoid dairy and eggs should look in Asheville (plenty of options there), what else could I say against this place? read more

I stopped in here for coffee and a quick breakfast for myself and two daughters. The girl behind the counter had some weird attitude, not welcoming at all. She said it would be ready in "8 minutes". 20 minutes later, the stale, but microwaved, donut holes covered in chocolate sauce and m&ms was served, along with a toasted bagel and cream cheese (still in the pack). We spent a week exploring Bryson City and surrounding area, and prior to our trip I had Honey Bear's bookmarked on Yelp because of all the five star reviews! As soon as we took the first bites of our cupcakes, I knew I'd be adding to the 5 star streak. All I can say is YUM. I'm not normally a big cake or cupcake person but I do appreciate a decadent, fancy cupcake at times. The only problem ended up being that I picked up three large cupcakes to share between four people -- thinking we'd all be happy to split them in halves or quarters and do some sampling... but each person wanted their own. Favorite was the double chocolate one. SO GOOD, wow! My kids loved the vanilla sprinkle and blueberry, made with real blueberries. We picked them up to go and as we were driving through the National Park (planned to eat them on a mountain overlook), I raved to my husband about how friendly and kind the two employees were. One was training the other, and in fact it was the new person's first day. Both went above and beyond with their friendliness and service, and I always appreciate seeing someone in a training role treat another employee with genuine respect. Though we took our cupcakes and coffee/tea to go, the inside was charming and there were plenty of seats. I noticed there were donuts in the display case as well and various beverage options highlighted on the electronic menu. Honey Bear's use to be our go to bakery each year we would travel to Bryson City. However, in the past year someone else took over the bakery, revamped the menu & hours of operation. No longer is the awesome bakery smell in the morning that draws you into its doors. Gone are the days they are sold out by 9am bc they don't open until after 10am! Gone are the awesome giant apple fritters bc of "cost savings". People will pay extra for the original recipe apple fritters so charge more! They are that awesome! Shrink their giant size is a second option. What ever they do they need to bring back the original menu, original hours & apple fritters! I'll check them out each year to see if there are improvements. If not, we will no longer frequent them on our travels. read more

If you are looking for a sweet treat look no further than this little gem. We went into this place because it offered coffee and sweet teats and were greatly surprised. We met one of the owners during our visit and found he makes these sweet addictions daily in the kitchen attached to the store. We actually visited this place twice in one day because we were not prepared to leave with food when we popped in initially, so we went back later that day to get stuff to take home. The staff were very nice and patient while we tried to decide what we wanted, and offered great advice in helping us make our decisions. This place offers a variety of coffee flavors, which be bought a few bags and brought them home to try. I wouldn't say it's my most favorite flavored coffee, but they have both have made decent cups of coffee. I have never been a fan of Boston Crème pies/cakes...until now. Jeff has created the MECA of all Boston Crème recipes and put it in the form of a doughnut and cupcake! The doughnut is flight and fluffy and the custard has the perfect creaminess and sweetness. The cupcake is the same way with the perfect amount of chocolate ganache spread across the top. I seriously could have made myself sick off eating these two delights. We tried a few of the other doughnuts, the typical glazed and a glazed with chocolate and sprinkles, and those doughnuts also were very light and fluffy, and melted in your mouth even though they had been made earlier in the day. Everything and their dessert case looked so delicious which made it very hard to narrow it down to the few that we were going to try. We got "Packed Hiker" which was an oatmeal-based cupcake that had dried fruits on top of it. It was a really good alternative to a traditional cupcake and was quite tasty. Because it had dried fruit and granola, I felt it was like I was eating a healthier optioned a cupcake. We then tried the "Red Velvet" cupcake and it was really good. Nothing really special about it, it was just a basic good red velvet cupcake with cream cheese frosting. Next we had a "Carrot Cake" and just like the previous cupcake it was a good sold recipe with a moist cupcake and cream cheese frosting. "Cake Batter" was the next one we tried. Once again your typical cake flavor cupcake with a buttercream frosting, nothing fancy but very well executed. I have to leave this review on a high note so I saved my favorite cupcake for last, the "Blueberry Ridge Parkway" cupcake. I don't know how he did it, but the blueberry flavor was so authentic tasting threw out the entire dessert even in the buttercream frosting. NO part of this cupcake tasted artificial! It left no artificial taste light you get from some cakes that have used "flavoring" to get the fruit taste. The buttercream was smooth and left no "film coating" in your mouth that you can also get from eating a bad buttercream recipe. The fresh blueberries baked into the bottom of the cupcake was a delightful surprise. This place has now become a definite "must visit" when visit the mountains in the future. read more

Update about Honey Bears cupcakery. We drove there yesterday, approximately a two hour drive only to find that the owner had sold this business. There were two young girls sitting behind the counter who informed us that they had no baker and only a display case with about one dozen cookies available. They said the owner had left his recipes along with the sale of the business, I suggested that maybe they should learn to bake, but I could tell they were not in the least interested. Maybe I should have suggested You Tube since they seemed engrossed with looking at their phones. The young ladies were very polite but unless they find a good baker I don't see this business surviving, what a shame. read more

I fell in love with this cute place. The hot chocolate was like no other. It was very very good! Not to hot, it didn't scold the roof of your mouth. It had a thicker texture, not your instant packet. The cups were adorable. I so enjoyed the music playing at a pleasant level. We could hear ourselves talk. Beverages ate available to drink for just about anyone. I'm so glad we stumbled into this place. We had a chance to chat with the owners, and they were the sweetest people with a great story. I purchased a mug and a magnet and was given a sample of their "silky and smooth" medium roast coffee. I love plain, black coffee and have tried many brands over the years, and this was hands down the best coffee I've ever had. We returned the next day to purchase a bag.
