Home instead sent out Ewa to care for my 90 year old Veteran Dad with Parkinson's for just Saturdays; we needed her for that one day a week. The first day she told me all about her herbal supplements she sold and maybe I might want some? She told me how much travel and money her daughter made selling it too! Maybe I'd like to try it sometime?! Uh, NO. She worked with my Dad maybe 2 weeks, mostly tidying up and "keeping busy" since she'd rather clean than sit with Dad. Soon we learned she was leaving for Poland for 3 weeks! Nice of her to take a job then leave immediately. She returned and within one week we were told she "couldn't" work for my Dad anymore. I was never given a reason why. We were told a bunch of stuff like oh "Ewa loves working with your Dad!" Well, that's a load of crap. It's her prerogative to leave a position of course. But don't accept a position with a 90 year old man who is suffering with Parkinson's then leave him for 3 weeks. I hope she stayed in Poland. Maybe they will buy her herbal side there. Phase 2. My Dad has died. We were sent a bill for over $200 for "holiday pay"/Memorial Day for my Air Force Veteran Father. He was approved by the Veterans Administration for 15 hours/ week free care from HomeInstead. Apparently they don't approve of paying for the approved day to a military Vet with Parkinson's disease. The irony of billing a Veton Memorial Day. I paid the bill to the very unAmerican Home Instead agency. Shame on you. Phase 3: no, I don't want a "credit" from your company. My Dad is dead, why do I need that? It's revolting that you billed me over $200 on MEMORIAL DAY FOR A VETERAN OF THE UNITED STATES. You don't get this Kelly. How disrespectful!!! Phase 4: Thanks for cashing the check for over $250 for my Air Force Veteran Dad's care on MEMORIAL DAY! You guys are disgusting. You probably don't know what Memorial Day is, anyway. The office team including Franz were excellent and able to help me manage last minute changes when one or both parents went to the hospital. They offered 24x7 or hourly care and the caregiver assigned was consistent, which is really important to vulnerable dementia sufferers. I highly recommend Home Instead in Elk Grove. I switched to Home Instead after having a really bad experience with another agency. At first, when my 88 year old mother with mobility issues only needed a couple 4 hour shifts a day, they actually did a decent job of finding three good caregivers. The problems arose when we needed to switch to 24 hour care. Here's the problem: these people are paid really poorly. We were paying $250 a day and the caregivers get $140 a day (one rather unprofessional woman informed me without batting an eye). That's why they send really checked out, sullen, and rather dim caregivers. Now, where does the other $100 a day go? It pays for advertising, the other staff who book the caregivers, etc etc. Doesn't it make more sense to hire someone yourself and get better care because you can pay them directly? That's what I did after a lot of hemming and hawing. There are scare tactics on the internet: don't hire someone yourself because it's so much work. Well, it isn't that bad. All I did was ask my mom's neighbor's caregiver if she had any friends looking for work and she put out the word. I interviewed a couple others I found on online websites. I met about 4 or 5 people who all seemed infinitely better than the people Home Instead sent, and in the end chose the best one. For taxes all you need to do is have them fill out a w-4 and if you aren't tax savvy, have an accountant do the work next January. That may set you back about $300 at tax time. Yes, it was a little stressful going through the interviewing, but not that bad. One trick I learned is to plug in a prospective caregiver's name into this Illinois caregiver data base, and you can see if they've had a background check and if they currently work for an agency and other info: https://hcwrpub.dph.illinois.gov/Search.aspx I also had to switch my mom's homeowners insurance to Allstate because State Farm doesn't have household employee coverage (you definitely want that, but it only adds like $140 to the yearly bill) My impression of Home Instead, and other agencies, is that they will hire pretty much anyone. I was often told that someone they sent to my mom had just been hired recently and they couldn't really tell me much about them. There are a lot of old people and the good caregivers are hard to come by. Save yourself the headache and hire someone yourself, just follow some simple guidelines about background checks, doing the taxes, etc.! read more

We have been using the HomeInstead senior care for in home care for my mother with dementia for about 2 years. They are very caring and professional. We pulled out mother from Friendship Village in Schaumburg Il because they tried to stick our mother in a locked up wing in a hospital room with a bed for the rest of her life. The absolute best thing we could have done for her was to move her back home to the place she knew and loved and bring in the needed help. The job is very difficult and it appears the company and staff have done a very good job developing compassionate caregivers. There are always bad apples but we have not had one. We also have online cameras in the house so at any point any of us six kids can look and see what's going on and what they are up to. This was no issue for Home Instead or caregivers. read more

Though we only used Home Instead for about 5 months until my Dad passed away, I was very pleased with our relationship. Dad was a very independent guy at 92 years old and was hesitant to want caregivers in his home. But both caregivers assigned to him were very compassionate, attentive to his needs yet let him remain independent as much as possible. I've been working here for several years. Very feel good work. You are a field employee so you don't go to the office every day. You go straight to your clients house and clock in and out there. If you run errands or drive to appointments you get paid for your mileage. It's a great job after you retire, or second job to earn some extra money. You meet some very sweet people who just need some help. The office staff is always available if you have questions or problems. They've always been very nice and supportive. There's 8 hours of paid training every year that you can do on your computer at home. There are overnight shifts available if you don't drive. I'd recommend giving it a go if you like helping others. read more

We've been using Home Instead for over 4 months now and I'm very disappointed with their organization. We've had a few great caregivers, but when it comes to communication they are simply terrible. Last Friday we had a different caregiver (than our regularly scheduled caregiver) arrive without any notice of the change. This is at least the 5th time that this has happened. I have told the office staff and the care manager Frank about my concerns but it just continues to happen. Our loved one (who requires the care) can't adequately explain what she needs so every time they send someone new we have to spend 15-30 minutes explaining and training the new person. Additionally, the caregivers that fill in seem to have no knowledge of the patient or her needs, and we often times feel so uncomfortable with the situation that we decide not to leave the house. We have used a different agency in the past and did not have anywhere near the issues we've had with Home Instead. Today I received a phone call at 1 pm that they are still working on finding someone to work tonight (at 530pm) for us! Well, that was news to me. So here we are in a lurch with no coverage. The only reason I'm giving 2 stars and not just 1 is that about 75% of the caregivers have been great. read more

Excellent service, options to fit our changing needs. "Rise and shine" and "tuck-in" provide an hour in the morning (or early afternoon, as we requested) and an hour in the evening, for $55. Very reasonable as far as home care goes. The one-hour time slot fit our needs. Our caregiver was Emelia, she was wonderful. The caregivers are not medical professionals, but can assist with personal care/ADLs. Also will assist with light housekeeping. No heavy lifting. The caseworker/ schedulers were so helpful. Once, we needed an unexpected, extra visit, and Home Instead (diane?) was there within an hour! They do not at all guarantee last-minute scheduling, but they made every effort. I appreciated the care and concern. They did tell me that in the future, there was a charge for last- minute scheduling, but waived it this time. Also they were very flexible and accommodating with my requests. read more

I started care for my Mom years ago with Home Instead when she was living in her home. Over the years she wanted to move to Assisted Living, I kept the caregivers going in for additional support. Now , unfortunately, She is in skilled nursing I still have a caregiver for her 2 days a week. They shop, go to lunch, her laundry gets done. If I had to do things all over, My Mom never would have gone into a facility and I'd have a live in caregiver with her. Unfortunately, that is not a viable option now. We originally talked to Gayle about caregiver services for my 102 year old grandmother. She came to the house, met my grandmother, and set up several caretakers to interview. The caretaker we have most often, Bonnie, is a blessing in disguise. She fits in perfectly in our crazy household, with 2 kids, a puppy, and my grandmother. Unfortunately, eventually we had to reduce the hours for care, but we still have Bonnie on Sundays. She gets along very well with my grandmother and we all look forward to her visits. it is no surprise to me that the owner of this branch needs to be dishonest to discredit my review. the company was advised of my mother's lewy body dementia before they arrived at our home. two different individuals came to the home. the company may of course terminate their care for my mother, but it was not done abiding by the rules stated in their own contract. the owner canceled in less than the 7 days his contract requires. the reason their trainer was requested back for a final visit, was so that he wouldn't be breeching his own contract. his statement that they were not able to care for my mother is correct. the owner however advertises "If your loved one has been diagnosed with dementia, ......, Lewy Body Disease (dementia with Lewy bodies) or any other type of cognitive impairment, we can help." (as quoted from their site.) Not true! The caregivers and the owner were instead being trained by myself on what this illness entails. I provided our assigned caregiver with an instructional video that i requested be returned on their last date of april 9th. instead, they chose to pass this property of mine around their office, preventing me from sharing it with the next caregiver we hired to care for my mom. My property wasn't returned to me until 3 weeks later on april 28th. forgive me for repeating myself, but seriously, be kind to yourself and go elsewhere for proper care. read more

I have had a negative experience with this company and their lack of professionalism and compassion. I would not recommend using them. I have found them to be dishonest and inexperienced. Since hiring them several months ago we have been through multiple caregivers, some were let go due to their inadequate performance and a few of them told me (the client) that they were leaving the company because they did not get paid enough (unprofessional) I recommend reading the reviews and looking up their complaints on BBB.org or googling all the complaints listed online before considering using this company read more
