A special deal is offered prior to 8am - coffee (large size) and a breakfast burger or wrap for $15.50 which is great value. Try the big breakfast where there is a choice of bacon, salmon or Haloumi. Great to have an alternative offered to the ubiquitous bacon in these times of dietary consciousness. It's a nice feed and those potato cakes are quite the tasty addition! Cosy airconditioned indoor area plus the option of outside seating. Staff are friendly with a proprietor who obviously loves what he does! Ample parking right at the door. With Campos coffee, perfect poached eggs, and just the right amount of delicious hollandaise on the eggs benny, this is a cafe that we will gladly cross town for again and again. They offer breakfast to 1130 and the cafe was packed when we arrived just before 1100. We grabbed a table outside and it was a cool Brisbane Winter day so we took advantage of the blankets Luckily a table opened up and we could ditch the blankets and enjoy our breakfast inside. It was quite noisy inside and the screaming kid didn't help, but once the large family groups left it was a lovely place to relax with a great coffee and fantastic breakfast.

Huge fan of the red pattern design on the walls and fabric of the booths. This place keep their style consistent. Pretty standard as far as the menu went. Asked for waffles and was told the waffle iron hadn't been heated up, was offered pancakes instead and pancakes are still good in my books. Food came out quickly. Tasted just fine, but not out of this world. Ordered a chai latte and for the first time ever in my chai latte loving life I had to add sugar. There was hardly any flavour at all, just hot milk and hot water.

I think it's a treat, if you have not been in there you should, at least, go there once just for the experience. When they renovate the City Hall, they actually kept all the original pieces. When you sit in there, it feels like you were back in the 1930's. I really like the tables and the chairs, very classic. Even the servers were dressing up like it was 19 century. I'm not a big fan with Western Desserts but I have a few favourites. So I ordered Scones with jam and cream cheese that come with any prime leave tea for $13.90 and I have Chai Masala. The scones were good as I expected and so was the chai tea. They also offer light meals such as: soup, salad, sandwich, all kinds of desserts (bake in house), coffee, teas, and a variety of wine selection. They offered high tea for $39 pp. The price is definitely more expensive compare to the similar kind of coffee shop but dining in an iconic site like this it worth the experience. Now put that on your bucket list for Thing To Do in Brisbane!

I was very quickly and efficiently seated by an athletic looking waitress in trainers who quickly ascertained my order before jogging off to have it made. She came back in record time with my long black and a bottle of water randed with the company's name and logo. I was pretty sure I heard her say it was 'complimentary' but was reticent at first to crack the lid, not knowing what sort of charge I might incur. The coffee was quite good -- complex and flavoursome without bitterness -- but it was making me a little thirsty for some palate-cleansing H20, so I opened the bottle. On paying I cleared the matter up. Turns out the water is free, but the coffee was $4, which kind of makes the deal seem a little less good value to me.

It was late afternoon around 3.00pm and a lot of the other restaurants and cafes in the area had closed up after lunch hours. Seated at our table the bubbly waitress presented us each with a complimentary Heineken (yippee). Feeling quite relaxed (but extremely hungry) we perused the pretty little leather menus and made our selections. I ordered 'The Dark Side' which was the only vegetarian option on the menu, a lightly floured bread roll topped with avocado, greens and grilled portobello mushrooms with a side salad ($18). My husband ordered the salt and pepper calamari ($22). It didn't take long for our meals to arrive and we eagerly tucked in. Good food, not amazing, but nice. Probably a little overpriced, but I guess that is how they afford to treat their customers with free beers - so I'm not complaining.

My key picks for breakfast - mushrooms. Never had such zesty delicious mushrooms, with the perfect amount of parsley. My partner loves the breakfast beans, and hell yeah, so awesome. Cumin, chili and tomato; can't go wrong. If you want to add some meat, you can, chorizo is available. If I'm wanting a bit extra, I usually opt for the haloumi because it kicks so much butt. Bar food I had the other week was Parmesan fries with truffle oil, awesome. Also had nachos with chili con carne, yum. Will come back for breakfast and lunch/dinner!

For locals and commuters you're in for a treat with fresh Genovese coffee being poured and an interesting and unsurprisingly quirky menu on offer. I had stopped in for breakfast and was greeted with choices including a Breakfast Salad (haloumi, leaves, dukkah egg, asparagus) and more standard options like avocado on toast. In the end I set my sights on the Breakfast Banana Split - fresh banana, berries (raspberries and strawberries), toasted museli, grated dark chocolate, toasted coconut and, frozen whipped banana). Served in a sundae glass it felt a lot more "naughty" and calorie-laden than it actually was and the frozen whipped banana (a great recipe with ridiculous ease) gives this a creamy sensation without the regret later in the day! Verdict: The coffee is consistent and for commuters stoping enroute to the train, this is key. The menu is cute and quirky and from my experience today backs it up with the goods. Four weeks in since opening, locals have clearly adopted this new kid on the block as their own and there's already customer / barista first-name-basis relationships in action. But, to be honest, it didn't blow me away. It's a great staple for locals but not for a trip to visit here alone.

Just recently I tried the bolognese pasta bake and it was very clearly microwaved as parts of it was very hot and other parts were cold. Also the flavours were actually really bad. I couldn't even eat half of it (despite being super hungry as it was 1pm and had not eaten all day!) I'm disappointed in this cafe as it is family run and expect that they make their own food - particularly at the price point you pay. Most of their lunch meals are hovering around the $20 mark. I don't mind paying as long as it's good quality. And this cafe just continues to miss the mark.

Wow that's a fairly bold statement I must say. Did it deliver? Yes! We ordered two Americanos which we were told was single origin from Colombia. For food we order the poached eggs on sourdough and the ham and cheese croissant with added fried egg. For such simple dishes they were executed perfectly. This place is a definite go to for coffee and/or breakfast.

Their interior…read morehas been done before - mismatched plates and cups, famous people as table numbers, kitsch china figurines and oddly, many lifesize jars of Nutella. But give it a chance. What gives this spot a point of difference, in my opinion, is their choose-your-own-adventure style breakfast menu. They give you the base (eggs and toast - $8.90) and the rest is up to you. Pulled pork (china town style, hoisin meets char siu and dances with soy), vegetable fritter, Haloumi, mushroom, hollandaise? The list is seemingly endless. I arrived to try it all out at 11:30ish on a Friday. It's not overly busy but noisy. You've been warned. The concrete shell of this store means sound proofing isn't an option. Their specialty drink appears to be a cappucino (Genovese beans) with weird and wonderful flavours like nutella or such mixed through. I stick with a flat white that's easy to drink but lacking any oomph. I had read a review previous to going that said ask for a double-shot if you prefer a real coffee kick and I'm inclined to agree. As tempted as I was by the sides menu, I opted for a 6-in Steak & Philly Sub ($10). I've never had a philly steak before but when my plate is served I'm a little lost as what to do with the second slice of baguette. Served as an open sandwich, I'd happily pay a little less for not having the lonesome slice of bread or pay a little extra to have more topping to use on the other slice. I'd actually also love to know if I could have swapped the baguette out for it all served on a bed of spinach. I quite like what's going on at Hansell & Gretel. It's not new but it is a new take on breakfast for this particular area which (and they're directly across the road from iconic Grub Street) I think makes it an interesting game of play for locals! I liked that it wasn't stuffy or pretentious, just familiar food done reasonably well.

It's small, unpretentious but a bit quirky, and does good food and coffee with friendly service and reasonable prices. The menu selection has some interesting things on there (each has a fairytale-themed name - cute), with a mix of savoury and sweet options, but what is excellent is the long list of extras that means you can tailor your meal to suit. I like being able to add avocado and haloumi to everything! There is also a small, slightly more lunch-focused section of the menu which has things like a burger, philly cheese steak sub, and banh mi. I'm told the philly cheese steak sub is good, it definitely is big! I haven't tried any of the sweet menu options yet, but so far the savoury things I've tried have been yum. They have a decent looking selection of cakes/muffins/etc, many of which are gluten-free or dairy-free (or both). Hansell & Gretel is right next to train (Gaythorne station) and bus (390), but free street parking is also available down nearby side-streets. Seating is both inside and outside, I just wish the outside seats got sunshine in winter! It should be a cooler outdoor spot in summer though to make up for it. Latest update: something has changed, and it's more than the refreshed menu with higher prices (that now exceed the value for money tipping point in my opinion - I know the Woodchopper's Breakfast is huge but it's also $28 and for breakfast I just can't bring myself to pay that). I can't quite put my finger on it but H&G is definitely not as great as it used to be, unfortunately. The coffee is still good, they still play good music, and the sweet treats cabinet still rates highly, but my brunch devotion has waned in favour of other places in the area.
