Cheap and cheerful is the motto - not officially but I'm guessing it's what it would be - as 'top brands at bargain prices' is the name of the game. I can't say that I have been to any HB much bigger than this store but HB's are not somewhere to do your weekly shop but more a place to get daily essentials.

It is a store filled with top brands at bottom prices and the variety of basic home essentials, canned and quick snacks they sell makes it an ideal source where you can buy general everyday items. Sometimes you can get away without having to go to the bigger stores as you can often find cheaper prices and get better value for money here. After all, it is really home and bargain! The service at each till is often busy but efficient and staff will put all your items into a carrier bag, so you don't have to. You can always trust this place and you can't really go wrong.

Home Bargains is just the best. Even when I go in and can't find the thing/s I went in for I always come out with something ace instead. It really is what I would call a 'general store' and I bloody love it. And bargainous it is indeed - famous branded items from tinned tuna fish to hair dye to baby wipes are so much cheaper than in the larger supermarkets. You really can make great savings here. It can be a bit frustrating when an item that has been in stock for months suddenly isn't (and this can happen a fair bit) but just go down the next aisle and I bet you anything you'll spot a nice notebook or a set of Mason Jars with stripey straws or a multipack or electrical tape or a jar or Filippo Berio about a quarter of the price it would be in Tesco that will cheer you up. So I won't be able to do any laundry this evening as they didn't have any fabric conditioner but I have just put my herb pots into three rather lovely enamel mugs. And I've got a new silicone loaf tin. I don't even bake. Brilliant.

The stock isn't always the best quality but what can you expect from a 99p store. I find this an excellent shop for those little bits and pieces you hate spending money out on and don't really care about their quality such as Tupperware, pet food bowls and bin bags.

Not only do you have the behemoth of good value that is TJ Hughes on your doorstep, you also have the student and freelance writer (not that I'm talking about myself, noooo) Mecca of shopping wonderment that is Branded Bargains. They're Bargains. And they're Branded. Meaning they're cheap, and they're things you've heard of. Johnson & Johnson moisturisers, for instance. L'Oreal shampoos. Heinz beans. Pot Noodles. Jordan's cereals. Not stolen personally from the muesli arsenal of Katie 'Jordan' Price, but rather the ones that Bill Oddie's voice waxes lyrical about when he's narrating the adverts. You name it, at some point (somewhat rotationally, we have to remember, as with Home Bargains) they'll have it. It's a great place to pick up quirky gifts and offers plenty of homeware as well as edibles and toiletries, and if you're even slightly strapped for cash you'll save a bundle here. The outside of Wilkinsons store is large, bright, clearly signed, modern and clean. Inside the store is large, spacious, bright and clean and well layed out. There are numerous ailses and these are quite wide so do not get too cramped. The store is offers great ranges of items from homeware to toys, hair colours and toileteries to pet and bird supplies and the prices are competitive.it is like an Aladdins cave and you can spend a good amount of time browsing. The checkouts are situated at the front of the store and they are normally well staffed, the customer service desk is opened to buy purchases when queues build up. The staff are very helpful and friendly and the atmosphere is nice. When you have had a good look around Wilkinsons you could have a shop around the town centre of Leigh and in the Spinning Gate centre and adjoining Market, there are plenty of shops including New Look, Dorothy Perkins, Select, Argos, Claires, Boots and more. There is a large car park at the side of the Spinning Gate centre which is handy, this is pay and display. I would highly recommend Wilkinsons, I often manage to get a bargain from there.

They have good offers on their toiletry section, like buy one get one free and when they have a sale they do reduce the items by 50% to 75% if you go in after christmas they practically give stuff away, I always buy chritmas wrapping and present to put away for the following year, it saves me a fortune.

Basically, if there's something you need, and you're not too sure where to buy it in the city centre, go to Wilkinson's.

I needed some silver craft glitter spray for a flower arrangement. Got glitter hairspray, which had the same effect, for 79p I think. Which was good compared to the £7 a can at Rennie's. Need cheap catfood to feed the stray cat that's always round our back door - Wilko's is the place. I think I've made my point.

The store is clean, tidy and well maintained. The staff work hard to ensure the shelves are kept well stocked and tidy. The store is often busy but the staff open new tills as needed and serve customers quickly. My favourite items here are the Hello Kitty fleece blankets and Live Colour hair dye for £3.99.

Nowhere else in the city can you buy a full range of fatty snacks and still get change from a quid. These aren't fake brands either. No 'Snikkers' or 'Cwavurs' or 'Ghalaxy Bars' here. No my friend, it's all the real deal. Now fill your pockets and scarper before they realise they've priced everything wrong. The only things that bring more joy than the low prices are of course the conveyor belts leading to the till. Each one is about the length of a 15cm ruler snapped in half. The woman on the till can touch the far end of it with her elbow. Nevertheless, you will still place your box of detergent on the belt and together you will both watch it trundle the few inches into her open hand. It's one of life's small pleasures.

They sell a large variety of toys, arts and crafts, dried food as well as toiletries. They don't sell all brands, but a lot. Unfortunatly, some of the toys are only there for a short time. You should buy them when you see them. It is definatley worth a look for kids presents - they are so cheap you will find that you just store them! Parking is not great for this shop, I usually come out very weighed down as, aswell as the toys the dried food is so reasonably priced, but also quite heavy. I would recomend parking as close as you can! Enjoy!
