I have been patronizing HOLMBERG'S for literally 40 years. My granddaughter, who is close to 40, swoons for their apple crisp. My late husband loved it, too. Their pies, especially the quiches, are as good as most homemade. I brought 3 quiches to a church breakfast, and they were such a hit, someone always gets them now. The apples are so good, I've been spoiled and don't buy supermarket ones ever. Same for pears. Barrel pickles. Their cookies were my husband's favorites. Fancy deserts are a bit pricy, but very good. Spring and summer plant selection is limited, but always top quality. Same for the produce. Delicious local dairy products -- try Sweet Grass Creamery milk! Salem Valley Farms ice cream. A lot of touristy goodies if you like that stuff. Staff always friendly and helpful. read more

We came here to taste their ciders and wine. The tasting barn is a very small space. We bought a flight of 4, 2 ciders, 2 wines We really liked the spiced cider. We also tried the regular cider, peach wine, pinot blanc. They also have a store where they sell their wine, cider, fresh produce , lavender and all kinds of lavender products (soap, bath salts, muscle rub) and some fresh baked goodies. Very cool little store that was right across from our Air BnB. I walked in thinking it would be just a tiny gift shop, but it turned out to be a nice little food store. The had a small, but quality variety of fruit, veggies, meat and other locally produced products. The staff was very friendly and helpful. This little farm was a surprise hidden gem during our 1 week stay in the area. They have fresh baked goods daily and we got muffins and pies to try. My husband LOVED their blueberry crumble pie and ate a slice for breakfast every day! LOL They have a small store with some outdoor seating by the road with the bigger farm up the hill. During "normal" (pre-covid) times, I assume you can pick apples and blueberries. We went in late summer and the farm was pretty empty which worked out for us because we wanted to avoid crowds. They also have fresh cider donuts on the weekends which we hiked up to the farm to get and it was good. The staff was friendly and everyone had on a mask. We felt comfortable and safe. read more

We wanted to pick apples, but we hit a few problems. Firstly, we weren't aware the wagon rides to the fields were only on the weekends. Seeing as my elderly grandmother wanted to go, it made it pretty impossible. We also weren't aware that you cannot use a Holmberg orchards gift card to pay for apple picking. As far as pricing goes, it seemed pretty average, but you had to pay per person. None of the orchards I've been to have required you to have everyone pay for a bag. I think it takes away from the experience and makes it harder for families to go picking together. I don't want to pay for a massive amount of apples just to get all my family members into the orchard. We went apple picking here a few years ago and had an amazing experience. I don't know what's happened to make it like this. Lastly, and possibly the most disappointing, the staff were very abrupt and short with us. We didn't have any real issues with the apple picking staff, but the staff in the market was so far from helpful. It isn't a huge market, and they made us feel like we were constantly in their way while we were just trying to browse. I just felt unwelcome. The shop, open daily and year-round, is a cutesy produce and gourmet store with the welcoming look and feel of a family farm stand. Located on Route 12 but still off the beaten path for nearly everyone and so also for me, I find it worth my special trip just for the plentitude of varieties of their "homegrown" apples sold here late summer through early spring. My all-time favorite is their Macoun apples, but I should not tell you this, else you buy them all ahead of me. While not organically-grown, their Macouns outshine even the ecologically-grown Macouns always sold in-season at Willimantic Food Coop and the organically-grown Macouns sometimes sold in-season at Fiddleheads. They also sell their own apple cider in season, and for those who imbibe their own hard cider sold year-round. But wait! They grow and sell also berries and peaches, and berries grown elsewhere locally just before or just after theirs are in season. Plus a selection of produce you'd expect to find in supermarkets, just not as many varieties or quantities, but always of high qualities. This place is the hidden gem of Gales Ferry. read more

I only stopped in the shop portion but I will definitely come back on my future Mohegan trips The food: EverCrisp- All the apples sold here were $2.29 a lb except the EverCrisp which were $3.29, even though they were more expensive, I can easily say these were the best apples I ever had. It had the perfect flavor and the perfect texture, the texture reminded me of a slightly firmer Korean pear and Korean pears are amazing Sweet Cider- Their cider was really good but the most important thing is that it wasn't too sweet. I enjoyed the sweet flavor and the slightly sour kick. I would get this again. read more

I just love it here at Holmberg! Always such a great time with fantastic wines & hard ciders! Love the peach wine here, but sadly it wasn't ready yet so we will be on the lookout for the release date for that! Just so happened this visit was extremely busy! We came during Columbus Day Weekend, the weather was gorgeous and people were everywhere! Some were doing tastings but I think most were picking apples and pumpkins, along with hayrides and all that fun-filled fall stuff! They even had a stand set up serving WARM apple cider donuts and sweet cider beverages! OMG the donuts were out of this world amazing! So, so good!!! Went fabulously well with my hard cider! :) You have to stop down at the store before leaving. The fresh produce and the freshly baked goods are so delicious! You will NOT leave empty handed! Holmberg never fails to impress. We first found this business as their winery is on the Connecticut wine trail. But it is so much more than just a winery or an orchard. Today they had some special events going on and the grounds were packed fill of people. Loads of people were there to pick apples and pumpkins. Some of us were there for the wine and hard ciders! First review is for their winery. Five stars all the way! From grape wines to fruit wines they have it all. Our all time favorite is their peach wine, but there is absolutely something for everyone. After our tasting today we grabbed some cold hard ciders and went to a food truck that had warm fresh cider donuts (absolutely the best I have ever had, and being warm made them all the better! After our wine tasting and donut eating fun we had to stop in their store down by the road. They have so many things there from farm fresh fruits and veggies, to beverages, and of course their baked goods. These are goodies to rival your grandmother's baking! You absolutely cannot leave Holmberg without grabbing some delicious sweet treat for the road or when you get home! read more

Really cute orchard for your annual fall apple picking! We bought a bag for $20, which I believe is the smallest bag for 2 people and we got about 14 apples out of it. They have 6 or 7 different types of apples and a large orchard! They even have pumpkins and a little market with squash/ jams/ apple cider. It was a great New England fall activity. We went during the week and it wasn't very busy at all which was nice. Also- we wanted to try the cider flight but found out they're only open on the weekends. read more

So the annual trip to take the kids apple picking has been getting steeper every year......but now they won't even let you on the tractor up to the orchards unless EVERY person buys a $10 bag for apples.......oh wait there is a $35 option that admits 4 people. This is now my new favorite orchard and the one I will go back to each and every year. Everyone was so nice, so helpful. We went early in the season (last weekend) and it wasn't crowded, they had plenty of wagons to go around, everything is SO WELL MARKED... The worst is pulling up to an orchard, walking thru the trees and not seeing anything directing you as to where to go or what you are picking. Everything is so easily laid out and makes it enjoyable to walk around. You can walk or take the hay ride which makes multiple stops. They have a huge area for pumpkins and gourds and we bought some delicious cider to take home. They have a food truck/cart with the most delcious cider donuts and cider slushies... And to top it off they have a winery as well, sadly we arrived at 5 and they have to stop serving alcohol at 5, sad but understandable and now we have a reason to go back. We made a few apple crisps the next day with our picking and they were to die for... The apples held up and were so sweet and full of flavor. They have very clean bathrooms, picnic tables galore and so many amazing photo ops around the orchard. (A pink tractor... I love this place!!! As I tell all my friends and family this orchard is my dream home. Literally I could live here even though I grew up going to this store. What can I say; this is a humble little business that promotes and sells locally farmed fruits and veggies. They are now starting to grow grapes and produce their own wine which is amazing (even though I don't drink alcoholic beverages but for the wine drinkers it's amazing..hope they can make some non-alcoholic wine one day...) Anyways one thing I love is the customer service. As soon as you walk in the store some one always greets you and they will help you if you have questions. My favorite thing is the pies! My go-to is blueberry crumble and when blueberries are in season I have to get one when I'm in town. Strawberry rhubarb or the mixed fruits is just as good as the blueberry crumble pie. It's got the perfect balance of sweet and tart and the crumble is always so crunchy! Not only do they sell pies they sell carry-out cold food items as well as breakfast pastries and other desserts of course along with fresh fruits and veggies. Overall I love this store and it's a great place to stop by; especially during the holidays. Try their apple cider and an apple pie in the fall and you'll be hooked on this place for life! read more

I'm really glad I was able to make it here this fall and was able to drag my boyfriend with me. We had a blast picking apples in the orchard, checking out their little shop with cheeses and fresh produce, as well as participating in their corn maze. I also did a wine tasting and it was so good I bought a bottle of one of their reds. Staff was friendly and helpful. My only complaint if that their prices for apples/pumpkins are a bit high. I paid $13 for a large pumpkin which I think is a little much. However. I can't wait to visit again! read more

We love fresh fruits and veggies, and even more love small batch wines and beers. Awesomely, Holmberg Orchards has both! We'd drive by randomly, and remark to each other that we should stop by and get fresh produce from their little farm market by the road, or do wine tasting, but it never really worked out. Finally we put it on the schedule with some friends, and made a day of it. First, we borrowed a branded pail from a friend, which gave us a discount on all our purchases. We then marched up the hill at the top parking area, and set to each section. Our initial picking started in the peach orchard, which was full of gorgeous, giant fruits, each rosy, soft, and beautiful. We filled our pail almost all the way, and then realized we had many more fruits to still explore. Our next focus were the luscious nectarines, small but juicy, and the pears, on very tall trees with soft brown and green mottled skins. After that we hopped on the tour buggy, and took it up to the apple orchard and corn maze, where we picked our share of fujis, on interesting trellises like grape vines. We then headed to the shack, weighed and purchased our hefty portion of fruits, and made headway to the wine tasting building. There, we did the full tasting ($14) which includes everything they have to sample, which was marvelous. The wines were made from grapes, apples, pears, and other fruits, and ranged from flat to sparkling, and from dry to a very sweet. We purchased a bottle of the Macintosh and the Cortland, both sparkling and apple based, and a bottle of the Heirloom Apple, a still, but the most wine-like of them all. At the end of the hilltop adventure, we went down the hill to the farm market to see what the options were there. We were excited to see we could buy the wines there, as well as the fruits, veggies grown onsite, many various baked goods, and craft snacks and other artisan food items. We purchased some small batch siracha pickles, an italian herb rustic bread made onsite, and a delightful sage cheddar. We ended up after all our very fun picking with over 30 pounds of fruits, enough to last us all summer and far into fall. Prices are not as good as say, buying peaches from Shoprite, but getting to pick them ourselves gave us a sense of ownership on each and every fruit. It also was a wonderful incentive to try new recipes, and to seek out innovative ways to use our produce. This was a great way to do our own farm-to-table experience, and to cook together for ourselves and gift goodies to friends. I would heartily encourage people to go here, to continue keeping this amazing business up and running for the next generations-fun for the whole family! read more

Haven't been to this Orchard in a while and glad things have not changed much. Came on a busy Saturday but was managable by the two women that were pouring tastings and drinks. Was able to get here before a large bachelorette party which was helpful as the shed that they doing tastings in is quite small. Only had to wait a short while before my party was served. We had the whole list of wine, fruit wine, ciders and other drinks minus a few that had run out of stock. For the price I can say it is quite worth it trying to many for one price and taking the glass home as well. Haven't explore or picked apples but maybe having a few drinks and walking through would be a fun experience. I would suggest trying days that others won't venture out like colder or wetter days to avoid the line which can build up being a small tasting area with so many to taste. read more

This used to be a favorite stop for me for years. But since the pandemic it has gone down hill. I truly miss the self serve bakery section where I could mix and match cookies, muffins, and pastries. Now you can only buy them prepackaged. I don't always want six of the same cookie or muffin. Every time I get the Apple turnovers now they are soggy instead of flaky as they used to be. I also noticed that they bake with margarine and I believe several years ago they were baking with butter. It makes a difference in the taste and texture of a cookie. I never buy their baked goods anymore since they changed the way they offer them and they definitely aren't the quality that they were prior to the pandemic. Admittedly it's been about a season or two since I've been to holmberg orchards. Planning to attend this season(hopefully next weekend) I remember how great of a property the folks at holmberg had. From what I understand they have grown and done some great things (including a nice wine tasting area). Fall season is in full effect and what better then some apple picking and cider. I've got my fingers crossed they will have some delicious sweets..Wishful thinking? I do highly recommend this as a stop for the grown ups as well as children, it's a great family weekend trip! This is not what I expected from a winery - the address brings you for their farm store. It's not a large store, but it has all sorts of fresh and local fruits, vegetables, meat, and cheeses. It smells delicious from their baked goods, and they do have wine bottles available for sale. I have heard but not experienced Holmberg having pick-your-own fields and a maze - definitely future "to do" items when I'm in the area. The parking lot was a little small, and be careful going in due to the angled spots. read more

I had a wonderful afternoon sampling the quality wines and hard ciders Holmberg Orchards has to offer, and I hope to come back again for apples, farmers' market treats, and ciders this fall. I would make the trip out here simply for the wine and cider, but I like that Holmberg Orchards is also one-stop shopping with fruit picking and a little market. In terms of wines and hard ciders, I tried a full flight for $14 (includes a glass to take home), and I liked everything I tried. I went home with a bottle of the heirloom apple wine (I thought it had a nice oaky flavor), the bubbly blanc (refreshing champagne-style), and the perry (pear wine). I held back on the apple cranberry wine, but I want to come back to get it for Thanksgiving gatherings. The staff was very friendly and extremely accommodating when my tasting went longer than tasting room hours. We were able to enjoy our wines and hard ciders with nice views of the orchards, and it made a great day trip. read more

Holmberg Orchards is a fall tradition for my family. There's more to do than just pick apples with the kids. There's wine/cider tastings. Pumpkins! A corn maze. Kettle corn, cider donuts. Lots to do & see. Sometimes they have food trucks. It's fun (but not necessary) to take the tractor ride up the hill to pick apples. They're organized by rows & the trees aren't so high that little ones can't pick without help. The walk up/down isn't that long either. You are provided bags as you walk in. I don't remember the corn maze last year but it costs $5 to go in. You can pay with credit/debit which is helpful. Nothing is terribly expensive but there's plenty to purchase & it's easy to rack up a big bill with lots of purchases. There's also a small but well stocked shop they run down the bottom of the hill by the entrance. You can purchase wine/cider here along with fruits & pumpkins. They also have cooked goods including their apple crisp! If you don't feel like picking your own or just need to pop in quick I'd recommend it. My only real complaint other than the tight parking lot (& port-potties) is the wine/cider tasting set-up. My server was very stingy with pours while the other one wasn't when my wife did hers. It's laid out easily but can get backed up. Still the wine/ciders are pretty good & we always leave with a bottle. read more

I love the Apple wine and the Cider here. In fact always stop by when around the area to buy half a case to a case at a time. However the tastings leave much to be desired. Yes we are familiar with the wine, but not everyone is. The guy today was very nice but didn't really tell us anything at all about the wine. To be fair he was very busy juggling all these people at once. You should staff two people on Saturday because the experience is seriously lacking. read more
