Creating a dual rating is my objective since I went here to see Ron Howard's production of the Beatles-the touring years. It is only on a limited one week run because I would imagine they plan to release it as a video. Starting with the theater itself. It has completely been renovated but still has that old time feel of when you used to go to the movies and there was only one show playing. A Yelp check in entitles you to a free small popcorn so I took advantage of that offer. The theater is art deco style and red track lighting along the floor guides you along the way to whatever row you wish to sit in. The have old movie posters galore for sale throughout the lobby area. The chairs are the modern chairs you would now find in most multiplexs that have cupholders and recline. The theater itself is small and can be rented out for kid's party's, weddings, etc. The screen images show what's upcoming whether it is breakfast and a movie such as Wizard of Oz or some horror film which I happened to note was catered by Prohibition baked goods (formerly Eliza's oven from the now closed Pittsburgh Public market). The theater got packed rather quickly with people such as myself who lived through the Beatles days as well as the younger generation who love the Beatles. Before the movie began we were introduced by two people who discussed the making of the movie and to stay after the film since it had a 30 minute digitally restored master of the Beatle's Shea Stadium concert in 1965. The movie started out well but seemed to drag in spots. A lot of time was spent in reviewing 1964-65. 1966 was not neglected but seemed shorter. Interviews with Paul McCartney, Ringo Starr as well as the late George Martin and John Lennon were also focused. I will admit the best part was that you were able to hear the songs they sang and tone down the screaming aspect. When the Beatles toured no one could hear anything with all the screaming and fainting in addition to the police holding them back. The movie only stresses the British releases of the albums made so when I grew up with them the American versions are different but the same songs are there. The last 15 minutes of the movie showed the post touring years and briefly touched on those albums. A short video was made of the famous rooftop concert in 1969. I was a little disappointed that the movie omitted popular songs of 1966 such as Yellow Submarine and Eleanor Rigby. Right after the movie came the Shea Stadium concert. The Beatles only sang for 30 minutes without callbacks and then ushered out in a car waiting for them to be driven off the field. The remastered concert was outstanding and it is a shame if this concert is not added to the video. It was perhaps one of the best remembered concerts of that generation. After the movie was over we were all invited back to a different show for the evening which I thought was very nice. I enjoyed my popcorn and their prices are very reasonable. They are located right on Potomac Ave within short walking distances to some restaurants. I was pleased with the theater with the exception of the fact that the restrooms are downstairs and it is hard for me to climb steps these day. Still it is worthwhile to check out since they have great classic movies from time to time. Don't expect fancy frills here such as surround sound. It's movies they way they were originally shown.

Last night at The Hollywood Theatre, Kay and I caught The Last Unicorn, the animated fantasy cult-classic from 1982 and even got to meet University of Pittsburgh graduate Peter Beagle, the author who penned the novel it is based on. Beagle was in town not only to promote his work, meet fans, sign autographs, and sell merchandise he was trying to help save The Hollywood Theatre, which is in trouble again. The theater needs to raise $70,000 dollars in order to go digital or go dark. 35mm film is becoming obsolete, and unless The Hollywood can afford to convert, it will close. Don't let this nearly 80-year old venue become vacant once more. Donate or come see a feature here. She's still a beaut, the seating is spacious (I can stick my feet almost all the way out before touching the seats in front of me and don't even need to stand up when someone walks by), the staff are dedicated, and the films shown here are offbeat, thought-provoking, and fun.

Fortune from fortune cookies they gave you with your ticket to the last dragon - so cute!

What a gem of a place in the heart of Dormont - love coming here for movies. Went to see the last dragon (sho 'nuff!) and the star of the movie was there - signing autographs and doing q&a after the movie-it was awesome. I checked in on Yelp and got a free small popcorn-score! Another plus - its byob - you can only bring wine or beer but how great is that?
