We saw many hiking trails and will be back to explore those. Nature was pristine -- so well maintained, no trash, absolutely gorgeous. We felt like we were in a magical place on a vacation, not right within Durham. We will be back regularly!

I lucked out and found a parking spot at Tap Room. It is a small lot, so it may fill up quickly. There is another lot behind the building to the side or street parking is available. There was a street market, so it was harder to find. I did double-check that I could park at the bar when I checked in for the tour. Restrooms are available inside, and food and beverages can be brought on the trolley with a few exceptions. I liked this tour as we got a history lesson while the trolley was moving, and then we got to get off at different stops for a new perspective and not just looking out the windows. I still enjoyed looking out the windows and took some photos from there that weren't part of the tour. St. Agnes Hospital was our first stop. The stone hospital was rebuilt and opened in June 1909. It was during the Jim Crow Era for black citizens, as they were not allowed in white hospitals. We also stopped at the Heck-Andrews House. We learned of a secret tunnel and that there used to be a baseball stadium where a parking lot sits today. Devereaux Meadow was a minor league baseball stadium. I never knew a grand "Castle" (the original Meredith College) once stood near the Executive Mansion. It was a hotel and state office buildings at one point, too. It's wild that it's just a parking lot now! We got to see one of the trolley stops of the Glenwood line. It took people to Bloomsbury Park. It had electric lights at the trolley park. There was even a roller coaster, carousel, and a dance pavilion. Heather was an amazing tour guide and shared her knowledge and love of the city with us. I look forward to taking more tours with her.

Clean, free and punctual always works in my book. The service has only been running about a year or so but I'm starting to use it more frequently now that I'm in good enough shape (hah!) to waddle over to the nearest stop on Glenwood! With the new real-time tracking app, it's also become really easy to time your trips and catch a bus easily. The buses are clean and comfortable and the drivers are pretty cool too. So while Raleigh-ites may still be used to using their cars, give the R-Line a shot the next time you're out drinking downtown. Save yourself some gas and money on the R-Line. It's the right thing to do in so many ways...

For all the time I have spent at restaurants, bars, and venues in the downtown Raleigh area, I…read morenever took the opportunity to ride the R Line until this weekend. I parked up near where I would end up the night (around The Borough) and then took the R Line down to the Moore Square area to enjoy the World Beer Festival at the evening session. It worked out pretty good, took the R Line back and continued my night. The handiest part is the phone app tracking the buses (there are two circulating counterclockwise in the route loop in the downtown area). You know when to expect the next bus and time your arrival at the stop with it, with a little "you are here" icon for reference. Great feature, no guessing on when the next bus can come for you. Free ride, free wifi, free free free...free is good. Free is tremendously awesome (or awesomely tremendous, whichever). Coupled with very clean and well maintained buses that are also hybrid electric buses that help everyone be environment-friendly, it's a good deal all around. You will usually see a bus every 10-15 minutes, being that there are usually two buses going on the 20-30 minute total loop. They do run late night till 215a on Thurs-Sat, for all the bar hoppers out there, but be careful around end of running time I hear...get out there well before the hours end to make sure you hit that last loop. I do wish they had better Sunday hours though, 1p-8p is pretty limited but it's great they even do have those hours period for Sunday. Later Sunday hours would allow for more dining hours type of utilization, I'd think. Bottom line: R Line is a great and free mode of getting around DTR. Great way to see downtown as well if you get the chance. Two thumbs up!

Raleigh Walking Tours started with tours of Oakwood, so I discovered the company as I love seeing the historic houses and the different styles of architecture. Oakwood has Queen Annes, Second Empires, Neoclassical, mid-Victorian Venacular, Shotgun, and Craftsman. I get them all confused but Tricia can tell you about each of them and why they have a certain porch or roof, window and door placement and other features. I've taken the tour enough times I should remember but my mind just appreciates looking at them. The Oakwood tours now are offered a few times in the spring and in the fall when the houses are decorated for Halloween. The spring tours is different from the fall tour so you will see and learn about other houses. The Halloween House and the Nightmare on Elm Street houses are part of the fall tour. Besides the Oakwood tour, Raleigh Walking Tour has many other tours. The tours all have different starting points, and you are provided with detailed information as to where to park beforehand. The True Crimes and Curious Tales is my favorite tour. You get to learn about different crimes that happened in Raleigh and some strange happenings. I also enjoy art and street art has been something I look for so there are mural and public art tours as well. Raleigh has a lot of it, and I wouldn't have discovered as much as I did without the tour. But just seeing it is one thing and on the tour you get to learn more about it. A new tour is at Raleigh Iron Works. I did not know of the history of RIW before the tour. I just knew of the mixed use development that opened. But it had been a steel company with a fascinating history, and in WWI was a munitions and artillery shell plant. The buildings are neat to learn about then there is art to see on this tour too. Then there are Haunted History, Ghost Tours, Women's History Tours. I feel like I am forgetting a few others. But there are a variety of offerings. If you want to take a tour, just register on the website. Tours are pay what you think the tour was worth. If you are visiting from out of town or a local, you will learn something new on these tours.

Historic…read moreOakwood is one of my favorite neighborhoods in Raleigh to gaze in amazement at many Victorian and Queen Anne dream homes. The neighborhood is a National Register of Historic Places and is North Carolina's largest, intact 19th Century residential neighborhood. These dream homes belong to many wealthy and artistic homeowners. Each home makes you feel like you've stepped back into time centuries ago never losing the beauty of the house's true age. During the holidays you can expect for each home to be all decked out. Oakwood is home to Jesse Jones and the famous " Halloween Oakwood House". A true spooky sight to see each year in October. The Walking Tours are an excellent way to learn about the area and get your steps in. Tricia was our tour guide and she was wonderful. She was organized and provided lots of details prior to the event. Parking is plentiful in Oakwood and we started the tour at the NC Medical Society. Tricia has a talent for what she does and shared amazing facts and history on each home and business. Her knowledge on architecture was impressive. We walked the blocks of Elm, Lane, Oakwood, Person and Linden learning the history of homeowners like Annie Brantley. You make a donation at the end of the tour and pay what you see fit. I plan to attend a candlelight Oakwood Tour soon and look forward to attending another local walking tour.

(I don't think anyone else has the inventory of Intechs that D&H have.) We closed a deal and returned the next week for pickup and training. Matt was great...best product introduction we have ever had. He was patient and thorough. Eric walked us through the paperwork and was one of the few Finance guys that we felt was on our side. Again, patient and not pushy. Highly recommend the total team.

I bought a 1 year old used RV from them. They said that they had done a complete inspection and…read moreservice on it, and it was like new. Turns out, the plumbing system had multiple leaks, almost every hose/electric attachment point was loose or broken off, and they had serviced the radiant heating system with the wrong kind of fluid, which totally ruined the system, causing corrosion and crystalization throughout the system. Instead of the $70/gallon Alde fluid required by the manufacturer for that year camper model, they had used $20/gallon fluid prohibited by manufacturer service bulletin. They tried to fix the plumbing leaks over and over again. The RV was in their shop for most of the first 6 months I owned it. They never found the source of the leak, and lied over and over again that it was fixed. The heating system: they said that it was all in my head and that it should be working fine because it was practically a new RV. However, I heard the service manager cussing "why can't I find just one f***ing competent RV tech?!" to himself one day when I dropped the RV off for the 5th or 6th time with the same plumbing leak. Just don't buy a used vehicle from them, and best to learn to do service and repairs on your RV yourself, as thousands of RV owners will attest. It is really hard to find a f***ing competent RV tech.

This is a nice, relatively well-maintained campground within the Jordan Lake State Recreation Area…read more Each campsite comes with a gravel pad, picnic table, and fire pit. Some also have water and electric hookups and/or lake access. Each is in a loop near a bathhouse with showers, toilets, and sinks, with hot water. Bathhouses were definitely wiped down every day, but not deep cleaned by any sense of the word. There are water spigots and trashcans dispersed throughout the loops as well. The campground also has a beach with a roped off swimming area and a playground. The one big downside here is you don't really know the condition of your site and the shared amenities until you get here. For instance, some sites are definitely on more of a slope than others, and I saw several when walking around that I would be upset to pitch a tent on. Also, the bathhouse closest to our site was out of commission "indefinitely" which was disappointing. There was another we could use nearby, but we specifically picked a site near the bathhouse, and it was not indicated anywhere online that this bathhouse was no longer in use. So things like this can be less than pleasant surprises. Regarding privacy and noise levels: some sites are closer to each other than others, and some have denser tree cover than others, but broadly speaking, I've never been upset about the level of privacy I get. As long as you have relatively courteous neighbors, it's not bad for a public campground. Theres at least a couple yards between each site. I didn't see a ton of camp hosts or park rangers roaming when I stayed, but I'm sure there's someone you could call if you had to make a noise complaint or something. When we stayed most recently. North Carolina was under a statewide fire ban. This includes campfires. Unfortunately, this was not enforced at all within the campground, which I found incredibly irresponsible. People weren't even trying to hide their fires, so a quick lap by a host or ranger right as it was getting dark would have been enough to spot those violating the ban and educate/warn them. You don't think of forest fires starting at lakes, but really it can happen anywhere.
