The facility is very large, but has tight parking. It is located behind downtown Malden. The staff throughout the facility all seem very nice and always try to be helpful. Be prepared when school lets out for there to be a lot of extra activity here as that's one of the high populated times of the day toddlers and highschoolers alike.

There are no lockers only changing areas and there are 1 or 2 unusable shower stall because the drains need to be fixed. The pool area itself is large and there is a secondary therapy pool but I think it's used for kids swim classes I am not sure. Yes The non resident fee is a bit expensive but its for the summer months. There is a daily rate in of $8 nonresident or $4 resident per day if you rather not get the seasonal pass. It's worth it. The pool is closed when there are thunderstorms, and thy wait a half hour from the last thunder boom heard, because it's an outdoor pool. call ahead. The front desk staff is helpful and will give you a tour of the facilities if you request it. Make sure you go to the medfordrec website because their scheduled hours change week to week based on the swim classes and swim team that use the pool.

The instructors are AMAZING and are unmatched -- they know how to keep the lessons really fun and make swimming/the water less scary. However, the progress and the curriculum are a bit slow. Each lesson is 30 minutes long, which equates to about 20 minutes of swimming time (but part of that is just getting used to the water, like dunking in their heads). If I were to do it again, I would opt for a couple weeks of private lessons... this would have saved years (in terms of time) and quite a bit of money too. This isn't a knock at all on the instructors, who like I said are great, it's more just the slow progress that they make and it takes a lot of time to see it given how short the lessons are. Sign-up is pretty easy online but popular slots fill quickly. Makeups are allowed by scheduling online. There are 3 sessions to sign up for during the year I think -- fall, winter, and spring. A special shout out to Mr. John and Ms. Cassie who we especially bonded with. Without Mr. John our son would not have gotten there... now he is a great and confident swimmer!

This just means that when it's time to enroll I set a reminder for myself (and they send many, plus remind you in your weekly class) and make sure to do it timely. My youngest is still here and the joy and confidence he gets from mastering new skills cannot be beat.

Entry is $2 for adults, or you can pay $40 for a season pass. The parking lot is small, but there's additional parking at Dilboy stadium a short walk away. No food or drink allowed (besides water of course) which is a bummer, but makes sense for health and cleanliness issues. A few other reviewers thought the pool was dirty, but I haven't found that to be true. The locker rooms/bathrooms are a little rough, but it's an old community pool, what do you expect? It's pretty packed with kids so this is not the place to come for peace and quiet. Regardless, this will be a regular haunt of mine this summer for sure!

I was admonished by the "Owner" because he thinks his program is one size fits all and he knows my child better than me. My son spent 5 years somewhere else before here and thought it would be different since we could actually sit in on the lessons, which we couldn't do at the previous place we went. Well after 4 weeks before today (Week 4 was the first one I was present for, my wife did the first 3 weeks) , he was no better off than he was before he came here. He only started doing what they asked after my interventions, which were no worse than me saying "You got this buddy" ,"You can do it" or "Come on, you got to get your hair wet", promising him rewards and followed by "Good job" when he did it. I was then told by the "Owner" that he knew how to get my child to respond better than me then accused me of making my son nervous when he WASN'T LISTENING BEFORE to the instructor. After a low key argument with him, I was told that I was not welcome back, which is ok, because my son didn't learn anything anyway after the 5th week. So again, as a parent, if your child only responds to your words, DO NOT COME HERE. And btw, singing nursery rhymes to a 9 year old to encourage them to swim DOESN'T WORK. For the price you pay per lesson, go somewhere else.
