    Z-Center - Vassar Street Entrance
    Elmer C.

I've been a member for many years. I typically just use the Z-Center pools; they're about as good as it gets. Unfortunately, the showers and locker rooms are poorly maintained; towards the end of the day they can be downright filthy! Membership prices are the same, regardless of what time you use the facility, so there's no excuse for not cleaning it regularly throughout the day! It took a long time for me to "win" a locker in the Z-Center. Unfortunately, many lockers remain unused- for years -as evidenced by the thick layer of dust visible through the sides. It's too bad they're not recycled to others, which would free up more day lockers for everyone. It's also a shame that the facility has reduced hours during Holiday breaks and especially during the summer. That's the very time that many people have a little extra time on their hands and perhaps even a little more motivation to get in shape. All-in-all though, the Z-Center is one of the (many) things I love about MIT and I'm very grateful to be able to swim there... it's inspiring! The desk staff are always friendly and the lifeguards are wonderful; in all the years I've been swimming there, I've never noticed anyone drown!

The pool is top notch. A bit expensive for the guy off the street but the best option in Cambridgeport for total fitness.

Our family has really enjoyed getting to know management and staff; the instructors are attentive, patient, and supportive in our sons' swimming progress. Class size is small and well-structured, with a strong focus on swim safety. We look forward to swim lessons every week! In terms of BSC facilities, just be prepared that the swimming pool temps and the shower and locker room are quite chilly. The actual swimming pool room is very warm. There's space for strollers inside the locker room or front desk area. Parking is very limited in Copley, especially during Open Street Sundays in the summer or special events.

Cost effective, but that is about it. The lessons are okay. They teach survival skills which is…read morewhat we wanted for our children. There are a lot of inconveniences - pool temperature is unreasonably cold, there are times the pool chlorine is not safe and class gets canceled, there are other facility issues that have led to cancellations, when they cancel they will not give you your money back, the teachers are not created equal, they want you to use their app but the functionality is nearly unusable, etc. The thing I struggle with the most is communication. They don't have an office you can call and the office's communication is TERRIBLE. I do feel like there may be a language barrier, but instead of trying to help you they send emails that don't make sense and get very defensive. I've had to escalate a number of things through the Director to feel like I'm even having a conversation with a human. Talking with them is painful. If I had another choice in Boston I would no longer go to British Swim School. But there just aren't many pool choices in Boston.

Also, ~$1300 later, my toddler still does not know now to float or swim without assistance. I purchased the 6-month package for my daughter for $1,040. After a few sessions in the M2 class, I felt she was ready to move up to M3 and asked if she could be placed there. I was told she was definitely ready, though it felt odd that this recommendation hadn't come from the instructors themselves. Usually, I would expect the teachers to initiate a level change if a child is ready. Still, we moved her up and she did fine. A few weeks later, I noticed an unexpected ~$300 charge from Goldfish on my credit card. I called and emailed multiple times and didn't get a straight answer until someone finally explained that M3 is more expensive than M2, and I was being charged the difference. No one had told me this in advance when I spoke with them earlier about changing classes. Furthermore, the Goldfish website does not state that the $1,040 package is not a flat rate for all classes over the 6-month session. When I asked to cancel the remaining sessions and withdraw early because of this unexpected charge, I was told that refunds aren't allowed and Kya had to finish up her package. My follow-up email was ignored. Needless to say, I'm disappointed in how this school handles pricing and communication. Finally, I initially enrolled my toddler in these lessons so she'd become more comfortable in the water and learn to swim or float. After spending $1,300, she still doesn't like putting her face in the water and hasn't made meaningful progress with swimming or floating.

I have come to only 2 of her practices and both times I had issues for just being who I am! Oh I yelled to loud and I scared a mom so bad she fell over! I tried to park my car so I was yelled at because I scared a family! Like come on!!!!! I no longer wish to join my family during practice and wish more locations were available to choose from! My girl loving this place is the only reason I have not pulled her out! But I have no desire to visit due to the issues I have encountered.

If your child has learning disabilities or has anxiety problems in which you have to verbally cue…read moreyour child to listen to the instructors because their ADHD and anxiety is severe, SKIP THIS PLACE. I was admonished by the "Owner" because he thinks his program is one size fits all and he knows my child better than me. My son spent 5 years somewhere else before here and thought it would be different since we could actually sit in on the lessons, which we couldn't do at the previous place we went. Well after 4 weeks before today (Week 4 was the first one I was present for, my wife did the first 3 weeks) , he was no better off than he was before he came here. He only started doing what they asked after my interventions, which were no worse than me saying "You got this buddy" ,"You can do it" or "Come on, you got to get your hair wet", promising him rewards and followed by "Good job" when he did it. I was then told by the "Owner" that he knew how to get my child to respond better than me then accused me of making my son nervous when he WASN'T LISTENING BEFORE to the instructor. After a low key argument with him, I was told that I was not welcome back, which is ok, because my son didn't learn anything anyway after the 5th week. So again, as a parent, if your child only responds to your words, DO NOT COME HERE. And btw, singing nursery rhymes to a 9 year old to encourage them to swim DOESN'T WORK. For the price you pay per lesson, go somewhere else.
