This Y has a very attractive/affordable monthly fee and a decent amount of free parking, which is the main reason for the 4th star. About half of the gym equipment is rather old, a bit creaky/decrepit and could use updating. The main workout area is spacious but poorly lit, seemingly by industrial fluorescent lights about the same age as the machines, and thus rather dreary, though there is no shortage of equipment or space. Unfortunately, most of the cardio equipment in the nice glass-walled dedicated cardio section is second-rate compared to that of other Boston area Ys. Perhaps this is a result of the lower membership dues? Floor staff and members have a rather aloof vibe. This being New England, nothing out of the ordinary really. One of the biggest pros of this Y is its decently hot sauna, which is a big plus especially during the colder months...don't know why it isn't more common at all gyms in this region. However, said sauna does NOT have any posted rules---as such, it is a much less pleasant environment than it could be. Namely, this sauna often smells bad and slippery pools of mysterious (probably better not to know, lol) liquids often form on the concrete floor. Equally gross: instead of wearing just a towel or at most, a pair of swim trunks in the sauna, many members wear their full workout outfit or even street clothes in the sauna, which only adds to the, ahem, "special aroma" of the place. Below this review, I've attached the sauna rules applied at the Cambridge Y and mostly followed by their members, which makes a huge positive difference. If only the Malden Y had the same! In particular, it's painfully obvious that many users of this sauna fail to shower first BEFORE getting into the sauna post-workout. Yes, the olfactory consequences are exactly as dreadful as you can imagine. Another big drawback: The locker room and shower areas are often quite crowded. Not great during winter virus season. Cleaning staff, if there are any, are nowhere to be seen during normal business hours when they are most needed. This is unfortunately a common problem at many gyms, however (cough cough, Planet Fitness). Being open one hour later on Fridays than the Cambridge Y and offering free parking and less traffic en route, are the only things that keep me swinging by this place a few times a month.

In November they decided to turn off wifi access for all members

I've been a member here for several years and would say its a welcoming and diverse place with bodies young and old and there is a spectrum of cultures. The locker room can get very humid and the building's age shows here more than other places. On the bright side it does have a sauna and steam room split by gender which is awesome. It's true that the floor is often wet from other people dripping after using the pool and I've seen a few patrons using cell phone cameras. I've never had trouble getting a day locker. There are a few types of pools and the lanes aren't too crowded, but it is not the cleanest. I've gone to a few classes and spin with Brad and Zumba on Friday nights are both popular and good workouts. The weight section is the best, lots of benches/squat racks/mirrors/functional lifting such as sandbags/grip builders/tires etc., but that means it can feel like a male dominated space. The ab mat section was replaced with a horrible material, but that mistake was quickly corrected. My biggest concern is the wifi. The connection is so spotty its difficult to listen to music when working out--and you can forget about streaming a favorite show during cardio. In the past month, a senior member of the staff decided they wouldn't support it at all and turned the service off. This seems like a basic gym amenity to me and I could see the parents waiting to pick up their kids from swimming or the basketball having issues with this as well. There is a fairly high staff turnover and some of them do rush you out of the building at closing time. Meanwhile they could be more assertive kicking kids off of cardio/weight equipment. Hours on Sunday often feel tight with the early closing at 6pm. Parking in the winter can be more challenging, especially with the new resolution folks coming in and the spots lost to snow. It also drives me a little nuts that holiday hours are only posted with physical signs at the gym (not on the website or via e-mail).

Pretty much meathead on benches with talkative attitude and leans Guys/gals on squat for 30mins. I'm glad there are no deadlift or maybe I haven't seen one doing it. Seriously 250lbs dude bench 275lbs are not impressive or guys took 5mins on rest and bench some 245lbs with arch back bench press for 1-2reps was a joke. Or 140lbs dude bench 135lbs & took 5mins each rest. This was all happened at same time maybe faith bought them together. Skip this gym for your own gain. I gave two stars because of the easy sign up trial I'm glad it didn't cost me anything but make me missed out to bench with my friend for my 275lbs bench.

Unfortunately, that completely changed after taking a class with the instructor, Alexander Liviner. From the beginning, his attitude came across as arrogant and superior -- exactly the opposite of what I was hoping for. At one point, he made fun of me for being slow. It was completely unnecessary. If he was trying to be funny, it wasn't funny at all. It felt humiliating rather than motivating. I also got a little confused with the weights and accidentally grabbed the wrong one. Instead of guiding me or correcting me in a professional way, he made a facial expression that made me feel like I was stupid. A coach's role is to support and teach -- not to mock or belittle someone who is trying. It also felt like he clearly favored more advanced participants, giving them more attention while others were left feeling invisible. I left the class embarrassed, disappointed, and honestly regretting that I took it. It was a horrible experience. Lifetime should choose instructors who lead with encouragement and professionalism -- not arrogance or favoritism.

However, I do think there is room for improvement when it comes to overall cleanliness and attention to detail. Unfortunately, my experience in a class with an instructor named Alexander was very disappointing. It was my first time taking that class, and it was completely full. I did not feel properly guided or supported as a beginner. It was very clear that he showed preference toward certain pretty women in the class, giving them most of his attention. At times, it felt unprofessional, as if he was more focused on flirting and showing off than actually instructing. That kind of behavior should stay outside of a professional fitness class setting. Because I did not receive proper corrections, I ended up with knee pain after the session from doing repeated squats incorrectly. As a first-timer, I expected more supervision and professionalism. Overall, the gym itself has great potential, but this experience left a very bad impression. I would not recommend taking his class.
