The Ampersand Inn - The Thissen Room

We last minute needed to drive to NJ to pick up a cat (as one does) and we decided instead of…read moremaking a long trek home and back, to make it a quick weekend getaway. This bed and breakfast was very close to where we needed to go. The room is spacious with a nice bathroom attached. Downstairs in the common area is very welcoming. When I came downstairs after a pretty miserable drive where it rained the entire time, we were starving and wondering what might still be open. The owner was chatting with people in the dining room and went through a map and menus of nearby places to try out. Breakfast the next morning is community style where you may be sitting across another guest at your table. Breakfast was delicious and included in house prepared pound cake. They asked if we wanted the meat or vegetarian quiche ahead of time and since we couldnt decide we got both and split both haha. We came up during winter when there was still snow on the ground, and when we showed up it was rainy and dark, but in the light of day next morning we could see that the grounds were beautiful. We could see a wedding being hosted here.

I was able to check in early and they offered late check out if needed. The only thing that could have been better was perhaps including more toiletries (maybe a shower cap, cotton swabs, etc) or a pair of scissors in the kitchen area. Overall, we had a great stay and thought the price was good for the spacious suite!

Four floors and the location was amid a convention center. The rooms were excellent. Staff professional. All the other trappings of a Residence Inn on point. No hot tub in the pool area which was disappointing - but the heated pool (uncommon) was a nice touch. I'll absolutely be back when in the area for work. Couple of notes that are likely cost cutting measures by corporate: 1) No paper towels in the kitchenette section of the room. Kind of annoying. 2.) I know it's been happening over time, but the elimination of face/body lotion from the rooms is something I keep forgetting about. Full service Marriott properties and JWs have it. But now it seems Residence Inns have joined Courtyards and Fairfield properties in this way. I'm sure over the millions of properties these measures add up to real dollars. But it seems the nickel and diming could be made up in other ways. But, like I said, I'm sure there is a global .xls sheet somewhere that could change my mind.

The house itself is a beautiful blend of historic character and a few modern touches--staying in the Allamuchy Room felt like a true retreat. It was cozy, warm, and had everything we could possibly need for a winter getaway. The hospitality from Ricardo and Don is world-class. They went above and beyond by securing us a dinner reservation at a local restaurant where, thanks to their connection, we were treated like royalty! They even provided us with a custom photo taken in the parlor room of the house--a beautiful, personal memento that we will truly treasure. We also loved the 'snack room'--it was so well-stocked with coffee, tea, sweets, and chips, which was perfect for a cold evening. Breakfast was absolutely amazing, and meeting their dog, Takoda, was a highlight--he is such a sweet, gentle giant. Ricardo and Don have thought of every detail to make their guests feel at home. If you're looking for a personal touch in a stunning historic setting, this is it. We can't wait to return!

He apologized for my…read moreexperience and took the position that "unfortunately their Regular Security Guard had called out sick...and well some parties get out of hand...but we are top rated with Holiday Inn...Sorry no can't comp you a free night, besides we're fully booked". Way to drop the ball--i originally gave 2 stars for the Sales Manager who took ownership & immediately refunded my first two nights stay and delivered a hand written apology note. I'm currently staying at this Holiday Inn while my father is in hospice care, and although the property itself is new, clean, and nicely updated with decent amenities, my experience has been extremely disappointing. This hotel caters to large wedding parties, many of whom treat the building as a second party venue rather than a hotel. Despite being assigned to the "quiet floor" and being warned at check-in about potential noise, my first night included what felt like a full-blown frat party in the hallway. After a sleepless night, I suggested the hotel consider simple courtesy signage--similar to what some bars use--to remind guests to respect others as they return to their rooms. This is a reasonable, basic step, and it shouldn't fall on guests to propose it. An even more concerning issue was the front desk service. When I asked for matches to light a candle to say a prayer for my father, I fully expected a polite safety-related decline. Instead, the employee said, "100% no problem--promise you will burn this place to the ground." Whether meant as a joke or not, it was wildly inappropriate, unprofessional, and deeply unsettling given the circumstances. When I asked another staff member the following evening if I should expect another night like the first, the response was simply, "That's how people are these days." No reassurance, no ownership, and no sense of hospitality. Overall, the lack of guest control, poor handling of disruptive events, coupled with shockingly unprofessional staff interactions have made an already difficult time even harder. I hope management addresses these issues, because the property has potential--but right now, the guest experience falls far short of acceptable.

Mini omelets, pancakes, oatmeal, cereal, sausage, yogurt and fruit. They do a lot of wedding parties here and the 4 nights I stayed there was always a party going on with a lot of drunk guests. If it was free it would make sense but not worth the asking price. The front desk it's pretty bad. I've never seen more than one person working it so the lines/wait can get annoying. Especially since that's where you pay for a bag of chips, can of coke and other convenience items. Last night I waited a few minutes to pay for a soda and nobody even showed up so I left.
