I'm in love with this new find! Because Oregon is the most amazing at naming things, after Fort Rock and Crack in the Ground, we had to find this thing we saw on a sign at some point. It's definitely an addition, not something to work a whole trip around. The camping out there is pretty rough with no amenities, and it's hot and dry just like you'd expect. But we were already out that way, so it was perfect for us. Our Subaru made it just fine, but we might have been lucky as the roads change conditions based on weather. Have good tires and take it slow on the rocky parts if you're in an average car. Otherwise, it's a pretty drive with a lovely conclusion. I didn't look it up first, I wanted to be surprised, and I wasn't disappointed. Essentially it's a big old crater created by a volcanic steam explosion, also known as a maar (yeah, I googled that bit after the fact). It's otherwordly to see, really pristine. You can drive right up to the rim all the way around. I recommend descending into the thing, I mean it'd be a shame not to after driving all that way. But of course, you're going to be walking back up in dust and direct heat on a sunny day so take that into consideration. It's a mile across and the lovely lady who we met at the top that inquired as to whether the dust we were covered in came from hiking in and out figured it was about a half mile up. I have no idea, it seems much longer on the return trip. My eleven year old made it, and he's not athletic, so I wouldn't call it difficult, but it's a workout. We went when there was just a mud puddle left in the center and a beautiful sand lily bloom, and now it's kind of happily burned into my go to dopamine memory. I saw horse tracks so I'm sure that's a fun way to go if it's your thing. Dirt bike sign as well. It's obviously well trafficked and has a simple beauty to it in that quiet zen desert way Central Oregon is made out of. read more
