Enjoyed watching a Hokie Basketball game at the Hokie House while I was in town. The wait staff was very friendly. The food was good bar food. Went to Hokie House countless times in college at VT but can only speak to their drinks selection. They've got a great and fun atmosphere on the second floor with darts, pool tables, and loud music. It's always packed and always a great time. If you're looking for a great drink, get a Grateful Dead. It's my favorite drink, and I've tried to recreate it to this day without success. Long live Hokie house-honestly 7 years later this place hasn't changed a ton. Upstairs you can play darts and some pool and downstairs is a better spot to eat and watch sports. I recently went back to Blacksburg for a Tech football game, and one of my old college roommates and I wanted to grab a bite before kickoff. We decided on Hokie House, mainly to see it one more time and also because it seemed to be the least busy. It's good to note that Hokie House looks almost exactly as it did waaaaay back when I was a Tech student. But that's also a bad thing since Hokie House reminds me of a dilapidated frat house that was half-heartedly converted into a restaurant/bar. I must warn anyone coming into Hokie House who's in a hurry - this place is SLOW. It runs like a typical bar, but the employees are young and obviously not in it for the long haul. So they're, how do I say, extremely laid back when it comes to speed of service. We were able to get a table and our drink orders quickly, but the food took some time (both of us ordered a burger and fries) and the server disappeared after she dropped off our food. When we finished our entrees we waited for another 15 minutes before we actually saw our server to flag her down. She got us our checks and we paid, and walked out thinking the service would've been the same if we were dead. Went there for halloween and from the second we got there, the waitress in the blue KC hat was being extremely rude to our whole group. The customer service was absolutely horrific and she truly ruined our whole experience. Definitely lost a lot of respect for Hokie House as a business. I went here once while I was a student there. I waited about 15 minutes for the bartender to close my tab - she kept helping everybody else, even after making direct eye contact with me waving like 5 times. Anyway I left her a 15% tip and she was so mad about that she called me an asshole and threw soggy napkins at me. I've only really ever had appetizers here so I'll leave food out of the review. This is mine and my close group of friends' favorite Tech bar. We would be here for happy hour pretty much every Thursday and Friday. The happy hour was the best in town. $1 for singles, $2 for doubles, and $3 for triples. How can you beat that in a college bar? You can't. The bottom half of the establishment consists of a full bar, booths and tables to sit, two pool tables, a shuffleboard table, and a "jukebox" that plays your requests for a dollar. The top half consists of another jukebox that plays music, darts, video games, more pool tables, a large space to stand around with your friends, and another full bar. Both levels have bathrooms. The top half can get smokey at times but it's still a great place to hang out. This will forever be the greatest happy hour place in blacksburg. read more

Bouncers don't understand how to read an ID. Peeled the laminated cover off of my friends REAL ID (she's 21 years old) and said it was fake and told her to leave. I was also told by another employee I know that they aren't actually trained how to read IDs so they just do whatever they want. So lame. Train your dumbass employees. read more

We were in town for an event in October on a bye week for football. Went in for lunch and it was pretty quiet this day. There were two people at bar and about three tables sat. It is across the street from campus on Main st. From the outside it looks like a dive but dives are some6the best spots. The server came over very quickly to get our drink orders. Beer and liquor selection was pretty good. I got the Hokie Pokie burger. A burger with egg on it. It was very good and would get again. I would recommend this as a spot to stop when in town. Last night, around 6:15, my boyfriend and I got out of class and wanted to grab dinner. We went to Hokie House because of the great happy hour specials and burgers - what we were craving. We got to the door, and the bouncer, I believe his name is Jeff, started to close the door on us. He bluntly said "backpacks go here" and pointed to a wall, with no hooks, that was right next to him. There were no other backpacks. My boyfriend stated we were just there for dinner, and he didn't want to just leave his backpack there. The bouncer said "well, then BYE" and pushed us out the door. 1. What if there were little kids with backpacks with families, would Hokie House be able to accomodate? And what's the deal anyway? We were going to sit downstairs at a booth, not be upstairs at that bar. There was plenty of space. 2. I often get out of class/work in the evening and just head downtown for a quick dinner. I take my backpack everywhere. Never before have I been so rudely turned away for having one. 3. Keep in mind too, this was around 6:15 PM. Not exactly prime "getting drunk" hour. At that time of the day, why in the world would anyone be turning away business? From what I could tell, Hokie House wasn't even that crowded. He turned away two people that were going to get full meals and a drink or two. I was astonished and upset at how the bouncer so rudely turned us away. We wanted to go there pretty badly! And now I don't really ever want to go back. Thanks for leaving a bad taste in my mouth during my last week of undergrad, Jeff. You are a rude and probably very unhappy person. What else is there to say about a place that's dead-empty at the height of lunchtime during Family Weekend at a school the size of Virginia Tech? Despite that fact that our party of four sat down and only one other table in the entire place was occupied, it nevertheless took THIRTEEN MINUTES for the hostess to bring us menus. Then it took almost 30 minutes for her to return to take our orders. I was hungry, and ordered the bacon cheeseburger because of the way it was described on the menu: "All the bacon we can cram onto it!" Well, over half an hour later, it arrived -- with ONE slice of bacon (cut in half -- they tried telling me it was "two" slices of bacon). I asked to see the menu, and showed the server how the burger was described, and how could anyone justify what was served to me? I didn't send it back because at this point, if another customer walked in (which never happened, BTW), I was hungry enough to eat HIM. So I ate the stupid burger, which was downright AWFUL. No flavor, severely overcooked, stale bun. . . In retrospect, we should have gone to the Wendy's down the street. For only the second time in my life, I walked out of a restaurant without leaving a tip. read more

Worst service ever! My friend and I are taking three week seminar at Virginia Tech (we are both over the age of 25) and his ID was denied by the bouncer due to the expiration date being "too far out"! I used to like Hokie House if you got there before the students- cheap drinks, cheap burgers. However, we had a really bad interaction with a bartender this Friday. We were out for a friend's 25th birthday, and we had all been drinking. We went upstairs, since downstairs was closed. They asked for our IDs, and our birthday friend has a Wisconsin ID. The bartender said he couldn't accept his ID and would have to call the police. The rest of us didn't order drinks while we waited for the police. The police came, said the ID was fine, and left. The bartender then grumpily said he could legally serve us but still seemed to believe the ID was a fake. FYI students are gone. We were a group of mostly late twenties grad students. We walked out without anyone buying drinks. Very negative experience. read more

Love this place because they are the only place in Blacksburg (that I know of) that has Old Bay wings! By far my favorite flavor of wings due to my raising in Maryland. This place alternates between crap and okay. When I started at Tech, it was decent, then became the place you'd go if you were looking to get into a fight. I think it's fluctuated between the two since then, but one thing about HH has remained constant: they serve some of the worst food you can get in Blacksburg. It's standard bar fare, so you wouldn't think it'd be that hard to deliver a decent product, but you'd be wrong. I heard the wings "weren't bad", but the chicken tenders were terrible. The establishment was moderately filled, but it took over 30-45 minutes to get an order of 10 wings and 4 burnt chicken tenders. As far as the bar is concerned, they finally got Killians off tap upstairs, which is good since it tasted like soap for 5+ years. Hopefully they replaced/cleaned the line before replacing it with something else. I've only hung out downstairs once, and that was to play shuffleboard. The rest of the times I've been there I've hung out upstairs, mostly to play pool. It looks like they reupholstered the tables since the last time I was there, which was a pleasant surprise. There's a shuffleboard table upstairs, too, so there's stuff to do. Some might be interested to know that you can smoke upstairs, presumably because they have 2 separate bars and ventilation systems, so don't go upstairs without expecting to smell like ass afterward. Really, the only reason I went here this past time was because my friend knew the bartender and either got a great deal or was paying for everyone w/ his company card. Pretty much exactly the same as it was 10 years ago, except now they serve a late night breakfast. At night it is a weird mix of dive bar, pool hall, and college bar. Lunch was good, but I don't think I would eat dinner here. I can see why current Tech students wouldn't like this place with Sharkey's, BW3's, and Awful Arthur's within walking distance. But if you want a cool place to have some beers, play some pool, and be able to talk to your friends without shouting, give this place a shot. read more

Ugh! Where to even begin? Dirty. Filthy. Nasty. That's just the decor. I hate using the restrooms for a reason in this place and was proven again this evening that I am thankful I am up to date on my shots. I have a picture of what I found in the women's room upstairs but it's nasty. Toilets not flushed with waste in them and a pair of, surely, soiled leopard print panties in the corner of the stall balled up with a tampon tube on top. I did NOT get too close. F'ing gross. Floor is sticky to the point you actually stick to it. Seats are no better to tell the truth.
