This family-friendly park offers about three miles of hiking trails, and we decided to do the Honeybee Canyon Loop Trail. Being mostly flat, most of the trails are rated "easy", but there are a few short areas where the slope is a bit steep and you need to ascend/descend on slippery sand or gravel. Entrance to the park and parking are free; there are about 20 parking spaces. Per my AllTrails app, we walked about 1.6 miles on a route that included the rock dam, but turned back without completing the loop as it was starting to get hot, there was limited shade in the desert, and, most importantly, there's limited signage on the trail (or anywhere in the park for that matter) so we kept going off-trail. This would've been a 5-star review if the signage was better to keep us on trail.

After a few laps around the dog park, we walked the trail around the park. This was nice aside from the rattlesnake near the path -- yikes! Luckily it was early morning enough that I don't think it would have really done any harm but definitely keep an eye out if you go. The park is cute too with a large children's play area. There's something for everyone and even in the hot summer months there was a good crowd here.

It has a nicely paved path, and when the path is busy with people (yes, we are taking distancing seriously), there are some unpaved trails that connect around the perimeter too that we can duck out on to. The paved trail is very well kept, and on our last visit, we noticed that the park employees actually go so far as to blow dust, dirt, and debris off of it periodically too. The entire loop is about 0.75 miles, so we do a few laps, and it's a peaceful experience. The dog parks (there are two) here are pretty cool, too. They get lots of use, and they seem to be very clean. We've never seen anything but dogs having fun! McDonald park also has LOTS of baseball diamonds and grassy areas, which is awesome because we enjoy tossing the softball around. We go at off hours, so we never run into organized games, so there's always plenty of space for us to play. We also use the basketball court often, which is paved nice and smoothly, and the net definitely has been replaced when needed. There are lights on the court, too, so play during dusk is possible. The park also features a playground that is almost always being used when we're walking around or playing ball. I'm not sure on its upkeep, but the rest of the park is clean all the time, so I'd say it's probably fine too. Something that some people may not notice, but I do, is that there are lots of garbage cans throughout the park, even a bunch on the walking trail loop. No excuse to litter and muck up our beautiful natural spaces! This is a really great park with a lot of amenities (even bathrooms). It is well taken care of. The verandas and picnic table areas, as well as the parking lots, very rarely have any trash around. And the trash cans are mostly empty. Everything seems to be in working order, and if it's not, it is by our next visit. The staff here does a really great job!

I thought it was pretty cool the way they reflected pictures onto the ground of the animals they discussed. They taught us not just about the animals of the desert, but also about the rock formations, and constellations as well . They did an introduction before we set out on the trail and an icebreaker, which I also thought was a cool little activity to help us all feel more comfortable. I would definitely do this again, and recommend it for anyone who's never done it. This would be a great activity to bring an out-of-town friend on. FYI- the hell when you first start, the trail is pretty steep.. I was huffing and puffing a bit lol. If you have any knee injuries or struggle with steep land, you might want to sit this one out. The rest of the trail is flat after however the hill is needed to start and end the trail (it probably took like 1-2 minutes to scale it). Also to find the area where the hike starts, you'll want to drive all the way through the park until you get to the parking lot on the left. For some reason, I thought it would be pretty close to when you enter the park, however, it is a little drive.

Most are pretty good but they run the gamut from too small like the one closest to our home to too large like at Reid Park. Some have unfriendly people and some have people that use the park in lieu of a single's bar. (Seriously!) Others hardly ever have dogs other than very large breeds. Northwest is near enough to our home to be able to be a daily trip for our girl. The people are friendly and the dogs are well behaved. Our dog loves to romp with the usual crowd who show up in the late afternoon just before sunset. By the way, the dog park here is a FABULOUS place to take in gorgeous sunsets over the mountains. There is a large dog and small dog area and people at this park seem to actually pay attention to those designations unlike the Pit Bull owners at Reid Park. Likewise, the breeds that are present are well behaved and not aggressive. There is the occasional steroid pumped guy with a Pit but it's not an everyday occurrence and they usually don't stay but for a minute or two. Northwest has, by far, the friendliest, most fun, and least pretentious crowd of owners and dogs I've seen in Tucson. A great way to spend the close of the day! Addendum: Ever since we've been going to dog parks in Tucson, I've wondered why they all have picnic tables and in addition really slick rock tables. I never thought people actually ate meals in a dog park until I saw people at this park with food recently. Obviously, it was an issue as all the dogs wanted to check out the food. But the real problem came a few days later when we took our dog to the park. She smelled the food that had been spilled on the table and jumped right up (something she never does at home). Before we could reach her she'd lost her footing on the slick rock surface and skidded off onto the ground. She tore her Cranial Cruciate Ligament and we're left with a hurting dog and a $2000+ vet bill for surgery. Then I found out that my pharmacist's dog had an identical injury from this same slick rock picnic table at the dog park. So, I've lowered my rating of the park (and all others) until the parks department takes appropriate action and removes these high slick tables from the parks (particularly the small do areas) and stops people from bringing human food into the dog park for a picnic. If you are going, station yourself near the table so you can grab your dog if they decide to jump up to investigate the food smells!

Grass trying really hard to grow. The people that come here are what make the difference, and the same people tend to come at the same times. Some chat and ignore their dogs while they poop, dig, and even fight. Others are great, attentive to their pet's needs, and actively playing with them. Many work on improving the park themselves, picking up rocks, filling in holes, and providing bags, paper towels, balls, scoopers. It's all about your timing.
