Brewery stop #1 of 5 and it was all up hill from here! Jesse D and I were scheduled for a brewery bus tour in Fort Collins and received a message the night before that they had to cancel. After sharing this with our friend Dale Z. asked if we wanted to hit some breweries up with him...it turns out the brewery bus cancellation was a blessing in disguise! We had a blast joining him on a Saturday brewery adventure in Denver. What I loved: - The tasting room is small and cozy with the feel of a neighborhood pub rather than a brewery. - The patio is dog friendly. - They have an excellent line up of beers, I was a huge fan of the rich frothy Gilpin Black Gold. - They pour a couple cask beers. - They serve delicious locally made pretzels that were delivered fresh that day. Room for improvement: - Offer taster portions (the three beers we ordered were all 10oz pours which is not conducive to trying out several beers at a new brewery). - List the ABV of your beers. - Put your best foot forward in the hospitality department. We would have easily stuck around to try more beers if they poured tasters and if the staff was friendly. If those two items are addressed I would easily bump this brewery up a star or two. read more

3.5 stars Love the conversion of a service station into a modern brewery & tap room. Not a huge fan of the surly vibe. Been there twice and liked it enough, but servicewise I will hope for improvement! The customer service could be oh so much better. Sitting at the bar for a while, the same scene repeated: customer asks 'can I get a flight', employee snobishly replies 'we don't do that here'. The explanation is that it wastes beer as people will try them and not like them all. What a crock! Some people just opted for a 10oz of each and after we sat there drinking one at a time & sharing them that is basically what we did too. The beer is quite good, and the space is designed well. It is awful tiny, so if they get space heaters I can see peeps chillin outside in all kinds of weather. The bar is small and it is hard to get service if you don't get a bar stool, and even then it is a challenge. Also, there are not really descriptions of the beer available which is a bummer. I hope this place gets growing. But dang, that attitude could definitely be improved! read more

Pub Pass 2018 strikes again. What a great place I may have never known about with it. My husband and I went around 2 PM on a Saturday and the place was steady for sure but not annoyingly overcrowded. We each enjoyed an Oktoberfest which was wonderful on a cold and kind of gray day. The beer itself was superior to most of Oktoberfest's on the market and to be honest should be canned and sold in stores (do you do that - jeez I wish if not)! I would definitely recommend Hogshead Brewery to anyone in the area as the beer was top-notch and the lady behind the bar was friendly and helpful. Also, the crowd was a good mix of young and old and that it the true mark of a good brewery to me. read more

English ales. Wood casked IPA. Lots of casks? Lots of "we're trying something different" here... Not like the other breweries in Denver I have been visiting-they may have an English style here or there, but this one, they have a different passion about them, and it really shows in their beers. They have a nice patio (reminds me of Seventh Son in Columbus) and their clientele fills in quickly-I was here shortly after opening, and they had regulars (one gentleman with a growler, and then a young man with his English parents). Everything about this place just reeks of passion-including Heather, who served me and had a couple recommendations for me since: a) I had a flight to catch in a few hours, and b) They don't do flights. Only 10 oz. pours. That didn't stop me from sampling three beers. Not a bad stop for you to get a Denver Craft beer fix that is different. read more

I wanted to love Hogshead, but I only liked it. Although I appreciate the attention to the English-style beer, I would enjoy if my pint came with a smile or a grin (I would settle for a smirk). Like many others have mentioned, the staff are hardly welcoming or willing to provide any information about their beer. When we asked (enthusiastically) for some descriptions of their beers (hoping for a fun beer-focused conversation), we only received gesturing toward the beer list on the wall followed by a look of "So which one?" English beers are not my thing outside of the delicious Vanilla Porter at Breckenridge Brewery. We had family in town, one of whom is a beer lover to the nth degree, and he wanted to start our sample tour here. It would have been rude of me to deny family such a request so I went, and not with gusto. We opted for the following 10oz samplers ($3 a piece, except for the cask conditioned, which I believe was more): Gilpin Black Gold (porter), Barge's Mild (dark, mild something, ale, maybe?), Boys Bitter and the Chin Wag (cask conditioned). Of the four, the Chin Wag was my least favorite, but it should be noted that I do not like Guinness, and I found them a bit similar. I find these types of beers oddly flat and malty but thin on my tongue. Regardless, those are the characteristics that make people love it and why some will love the cask beer here. Despite the cask, Hog's Head has converted me to an English beer lover. The porter was delicious and the Bitter and Barge's were very good. So good, that I will happily return and buy a proper pint of any of them. The patio space is not yet open and the inside space is quite small. They are going to need a bigger space to accommodate the thirsty throng of people if they keep making such tasty brews! read more

I've been wanting to check out Hogshead as I've heard great things. While an avid craft beer drinker, I'm not very familiar with English style ales and cask-conditioned beers. Its always fun to seek out new beers, talk to the staff and learn about their offerings. While the beer was excellent, the woman behind the bar was extremely curt and unfriendly. When I inquired about their beers and asked if they had more descriptions (other than the style) she said the descriptions were already on the board and refused to say anything further about the beers. I find good breweries are passionate about their beers and like to talk about them. Granted I may have caught her on a bad day and will probably check them out again. What? A local microbrewery without a Crossfit next door? Give it a week ;) This is a great little brewery. The beer is English. I am not a fan of English beer. It's a bit flat and malty for me. I like bubbly and hoppy. But, even so, the beer here is very drinkable and even interesting. The building is really nice, not one of those "Store-it-All" turned brewery that you see popping up in industrial areas. This place is walking distance from the Tennyson 'hood. And, yay for off street parking! They are a tasting room, so BYO vittles or pull up GrubHub on your smarty phone. There really isn't anywhere nearby to grab take out from. read more

Great brewery to AVOID, especially during GABF! Their beers are boring. Their service is rude, especially the tall liverpool owner. THEY TREAT PEOPLE LIKE CRAP. One of the best brewery experiences my boyfriend and I have had in quite a while. My little drove by on the way home and the sign caught his eye. (4/7) Heather was friendly and incredibly knowledgeable. hey had just had a busy evening/weekend so sadly a few kegs were out but we did enjoy the blonde belgium, barge's mild, and chin wag and were not disappointed by ANY of them. Wonderful. I especially enjoyed the Barge's Mild. The only semi-complaint was the prices were kinda confusing and I didn't realize the sampler of belgium was $6 for 10 oz, no huge deal but that's double the others listed ion the board. I was pretty excited to try Hogshead, but left totally disappointed. Cool environment walking in. Nice space, AC, cute layout. Initially greeted by friendly guy, who promptly walked away and left us with someone not quite as helpful. When asking for a recommendation I got, "whatever you want". Ok... Right... IPA was good. Empire was good. Everything else? Nope. We got two flights, which I will say are generous pours. Unfortunately, we kind of hated most of the beers and left our glasses mostly full. Dude, I never walk away from beer. Can't say never any more. No more Hogshead for me. Had to try it, but we will not be back. I like bitter beers, but these are just bitter full stop. read more

The best cask ales in Denver, by far. Not that there are many other options available, unfortunately. I've been here numerous times and the staff is always very friendly. The inside is small, but they've opened up a ton of outdoor seating since covid started. They also have keg conditioned beer in addition to their cask ales, but I prefer the cask. I won't go back and I love beer, breweries and the idea of a nano-brewery within an easy walk of my house in the Highlands. What does that tell you?? I had to give them two stars because there beer is pretty good (and I will miss it). However, the last time I ordered an ESB I got the chilled version rather than the purist, cask conditioned pour and got noticeably sneered at by the sarcastic brewer for being an American heathen. I love this damn place. I'm a Mug Club member, I think Chin Wag ESB on cask is easily one of the better beers in recent history and I think the staff is fantastic. Rick, Heather, Stephen, Mike... so many good people who work here/own the place. On Saturdays and Sundays it's super family friendly and where I would have given them 3 or 4 stars in their first couple of months while they were figuring shit out, I think they've hit a sweet groove as they head towards their 2nd anniversary in June. 4 cask handles which makes the wannabe CAMRA member in my heart a happy, happy Brit. The Window Licker barley wine is great. With so many new breweries in Colorado, I was very happy the one specializing in English style ales was a winner. read more

Meh, pretty much sums up my visit to Hogshead. Came in with my ma on a Friday afternoon during the holidays. It was busy, but not buzzing, yet it took a good while for the one guy working behind the bar to take our order. We tried a few of the offerings for the day--their Brown, their ESB, and their Session Ale. I was really unimpressed with all 3. Nothing to write home about and nothing I wanted to drink again. I also was kinda bummed that their signage is not great. I asked a question about a beer on the board that was labeled "ESB's little brother." I asked what that meant and the answer I received was not helpful. Also, they had something on their menu called a "Crew" something-or-another. No description. However, while waiting to close out my tab, I heard the guy describing it to someone else and it sounded interesting. Why not throw up a description if your servers aren't great at letting you know what your options are? read more

They're growing like weeds! Everywhere you turn, there are micro and now nano breweries springing up. It beer-goggles the mind trying to keep up. I don;t think Hogshead has quite got the logistics figured out on how to have enough beer brewed to supply the demand and they are definitely pressed for space. Imagine being a sardine in a can of sardines with all the sardines talking, trying to be heard at the same time. Cacophonous! The stout I ordered came to the table a bitter but I wasn't about to wait for a different beer. The poor waitress was slammed hard! The faux-bitter was good and I wondered what the other beers they were out of might taste like. I hope they get this figured out but short of a huge expansion or leveling the building and starting fresh (which I doubt the lot or neighborhood could handle) this seems like brewery impossible. read more

Hogshead is one of the niche breweries that has popped up over the last year in Denver. The thing with niche's is they are not for everyone. While I appreciate a good English beer from time to time, it's really not my thing. That being said if you're an English beer person ... this is your spot. A few things I love about this place though. The location is great, it's close to Sloan's Lake and the Highlands. The space is pretty cool. They have a huge patio which is perfect for the summer and night drinks. They offer cask options for a few of their beers, this offers a different taste and experience. A few weeks ago, a group of us beer loving Yelpers (wait a second, isn't that most of us Yelpers?) biked around town to a handful of breweries. Hogshead was our first stop. I love the location! The Highlands has so much going on and new places popping up, so I'm glad to see a few breweries dotting the landscape. The taproom itself is a little small, with only a few tables and small bar, but there's still plenty of room for several groups. It's cozy, without being stuffy. And most importantly, on to the beer! I was a bit disappointed that Hogshead doesn't serve up a flight sampler. I find that this is easily the best way to get to know a brewery and its style. So not having that definitely is a negative in my book. But they do have the option of a smaller beer (10 oz I believe) and a regular pint. I tried a darker beer, whose name I can't remember at the moment, and it was quite tasty! I sipped a few of the other beers and enjoyed them as well, but nothing jumped out at me. I just wished I could've tried a flight...a girl can dream. Hogshead has great potential. I'm looking forward to seeing how they evolve and what other beers they create! read more

I really enjoyed Hogshead. They had beanbag outside on their front porch which was a nice touch. Our group really enjoyed it out there. When we got too hot, the inside was nice and air conditioned. The important thing about Hogshead is the cask system. It is served a little warmer and really complimented the different tastes. Oh sweet baby Jesus. My friend and I came here on the Fourth of July and as soon as we walked in we immediately regretted our decision. There was a party of about 30 people all decked out in their USA best and incredibly drunk (there was a lovely group rendition of the national anthem, of course). That doesn't really have anything to do with why I can't give this place more than three stars though - don't worry, I'm not like that. Just mentioning it because it's relevant to what the bartenders were having to put up with from other patrons. We had no idea what to drink and when I asked if they served anything "blonde," the bartender laughed at me and shook his head. So, okay, cool. . . you're a beer snob, I get it. That's fine. That's why you're blessed enough to work in a brewery, kudos! But not all of us are that fortunate or beer literate and if you work at a bar/brewery, come down to my level because I'm on this side of the counter and I'm paying. I was not one of the red, white, and blue drunkards, and I don't appreciate being treated that way. Anyway, the bartender gestured to the chalk board on the opposite wall instead of just explaining what was on the tap in front of him (and let me say, we were two of the only people ordering because everyone else was already schwasty). I felt pressured to just pick something, and I hated it. My friend liked her beer. Shrug. We stayed for a while to people watch and drink on the patio, which was very nice. I would definitely come back to that patio when in the area again. So there's one star. (And +1 because I'd like to think that bartender was just overwhelmed with the crowd.) The third star goes to the OTHER bartender who took care of us when we went in to close our tab. An ultra-snooty staff that make the typical beer snob feel like a PBR drinker; a hipster 20-something clientele who bring their yapping little dogs with them; and brews that are average at best. That about sums up my experiences at Hogshead. Been there three times - won't go back for a fourth. There are so many great breweries around Denver now, who needs one with a crappy attitude and musty beer? Good casual space with plenty of seating inside and out. Plenty of beer options. Very friendly staff who are happy to provide samples. Most options are British type ales. There were also a few stouts and IPAs. All were available in various sizes and well priced. They allow outside food. Suitable to take babies in strollers / car seats. Not a criticism, but beware there are very few lagers and there was no sour option when I went. Unfortunately only the ends of the outside tables get sunshine during the afternoon (spring time), so wrap up if it is cool in the shade. read more

The only spot that I can find where cask rules all! I've been coming here since the taproom opened and the brewery has grown tremendously. Not to worry though, the taproom remains small and the brewery is a great local establishment staying true to those roots. Come here during the summer to hang out in the outdoor patio...great spot to catch those rocky mountain sunsets. The Denver/Front Range brewery scene is very vibrant and these guys stand out. Again, cask is king here. If you are unfamiliar with cask-style ales then this would be a good place to start your venture. First of all, you'll be surprised at the variance in cask ales as well as the flavor profile. It will be a totally unique experience for you. Next, you can always default back to traditional beers. So there's that safety net for you. Finally, Hogshead welcomes its customers and truly values them. In a day and age where breweries can become entitled localities for beer snobbery, Hogshead makes you feel right at home. Enjoy yourself at a great local spot! read more
