My first RG experience was with a girlfriend who is a big fan. We were there on a Saturday night, so it was very busy and the place was booked out. We'd called up only a day or so early and had a late booking (for 8pm), but called that night to say "hey guys, if you have any earlier cancellations, feel free to give us a call because we're literally around the corner". Perhaps this was a bit of an alien notion to them because they came back defensively regarding being busy and reserved tables and so on... it's ok guys. It's ok. Having said that, they then called back fifteen minutes later to say we could come in an hour earlier. Ok... good. Onto the food. She got an eye fillet which was on the rare side of medium. I got a scotch which was on the medium side of medium rare. Different cuts, different cooking times, sure. A lot of steaks at a lot of places come out less than perfect. But at a steak restaurant, you can't help but hope they'll have it pretty bang on. Never mind, the steak was still tasty (and the champ potato mash was crazy good). The apple fritters for dessert blew our minds. An evened-out OK experience. My second RG experience was just last night: a Monday night, with a visiting friend from interstate. Monday night aka "hospo weekend" can be tough to find somewhere great to eat, but we were both feeling it and called forward just to make sure they could fit us in. They definitely could--there were maybe two other parties when we arrived, and by 8pm we were the lonely last diners. We were seated in the back dining area (I think it may have been the exact same table I was at last time) and I'll say it was to our misfortune, because being right near the open kitchen we could hear the staff discussing closing up, who'd go home first, hear them cleaning grills etc. In their business to do this they weren't too bothered with topping up our water glasses or even checking if we wanted anything else to drink. For the food: her pork ribs were falling off the bone--they looked delicious. My sliders were tasty, but messy--the bottoms of both buns disintegrated as I picked them up. The chips were top notch. We got apple fritters to share and the apple centres were undercooked and disappointing compared to the first time I'd tried them. Actually, having written all this out, I'm dropping my original three stars to two. I can't say it was OK--I've clearly been disappointed. Highs and lows to be had here! I'm sure being seated in the front dining room or upstairs would have made last night's atmosphere better. Having said all that, I'd like to try another steak here one day, and hopefully add another star or two.

This is my third visit in two months and I'm ready to go again as soon as possible. They've thought of everything here and if you are with someone who is of, and prefers meat of, a more petite size then that is no problem ......or maybe it sometimes ..... my regular companion loves the honey ribs but the size is always far too large for her ...I successfully told her this on three occasions and have been able to persuade her to give me significant samples of her meal ....whilst fully eating my own of course. Our server arrived and was as friendly as could be. We ordered an order of Toasted Sourdough Bread with a garlic butter, a Peppercorn Encrusted Porterhouse steak, and an order of Onion Rings. The Sourdough arrived and it was perfect. The garlic butter didn't have a lot of garlic which was perfect. Then came this beautiful peppercorn encrusted hunk of meat covered with a wonderful pepper sauce. Yes, the sauce made the steak. The meat was of average quality, had some gristle throughout it. The price as very reasonable so I can't complain. I would order it again. The steak was perfectly cooked as requested. The steak was served with a side of potatoes and carrots. We didn't need the onion rings but they were a great addition. Atmosphere was more of a family type restaurant. Service was very good. Highly recommend making a booking in advance.

We ordered drinks, bread and our meal minutes after we were seated. The drinks were delivered very quickly and the some bread came soon after, and then we didn't get to order more drinks for close to another 1hr and 20mins from when we were seated. We sat there watching tables around us getting served several times, in fact some tables rotated customers out and more arrived. Its disappointing to seat tables served their meals and drinks several times, mire people be seated and severed drinks a few more times. I felt like I had gained a new superpower and become invisible!! Terrible service!! If you're coming here for dinner, its easier to just put your breakfast order in!! I spoke to the manager when leaving and he apologised and then just struggled his shoulders. I explained it wasn't the servers fault, she was overwhelmed with the number of tables she was given. The manager didn't care about my feedback with a terrible attitude, zero empathy and brushed me off when I requested this be escalated to the restaurant manager and owner. He was very dismissive and rude. It's a pity, my previous visit to the Ball & Chain was great.

Like the hotel, the interior sports of hand-hewn stone and massive wooden beams coupled with sleek modern touches-it has a nice aura. The menu is ala carte and features a collection of steaks from $AUD 50-99 in price, sides and starters. We enjoyed a special crab toast starter and a couple of steaks. I got the classic ribeye and my wife the fillet (which outside the US is NOT filet mignon). For sides we enjoyed the creamy Paris mash and the roasted cauliflower. Everything was good but keep in mind to order your steak one level more done than normal -ie medium well if you like medium-as this place like so many outside the US tends to cook much lower than you may be used to. But when she highlighted to the wait staff and it was taken back to the kitchen we were confronted by the owner who yelled at the diner that there was nothing wrong with the lamb. That he sold 10 others that day and no one complained. He looked at another diner who had the lamb back strap also the owner commented that it diid look under cooked. He aggressively offered her something else - she asked for Risotto - Butternut pumpkin and sage with parmigiano Reggiano - it came out with balsamic vinegar on top. When the diner asked why it had balsamic vinegar on it he said looked at her and said "are you for real" its on the menu- its not .. who would put balsamic vinegar on a risotto... what a horrible experience to end our Tassie Trip.
