Portion sizing was a little small for the price, but we didn't leave unhappy. The outside dining is dog-friendly and so is the north end of the beach. Would revisit.

Despite not having a reservation, we snuck in on a busy Sunday morning and got the last seat inside. Was expecting the usual Australian cafe brunch food, but that not exactly what you get here... The menu is light on the typical brunch fare of eggs, bacon and hash browns and smashed a o and instead have lots of things like beef salad, seafood plates, and Vietnamese salads. Even though I'm not on a strict keto diet, I ordered the keto brekky that had eggs, halloumi, bacon and spiced avo. Nice. Coffee was great: strong, smooth and the right temperature. The fish and chips ordered by the fam were ENORMOUS. 3 large pieces of actual fish, in a light, crunchy batter and a small cup of chips. It's the inverse of the usual fish and chips where you get a ton of chip and a measly piece of sad greasy fish. Service was excellent, despite it being very bi There's no kids menu though- keep that in mind if you're going with the kidlets. There isn't a lot for them besides a giant size fish and chips. If you have 2 kids, they could probably share one! It's not cheap, but given the location and

I tend to avoid that corner of…read moreHobart, because it's touristy and gross, but it's so nice to know that somewhere like Society exists down there and I can take refuge there. The gin selection is exceptional and there's always a gin of the week, which is a great opportunity to try a gin you may not have encountered before. Society also now makes their own tonic syrup in house, and I believe they're the first place in Hobart to be doing that. ALL THE KUDOS! It's such a special sort of offering and shows how much they care about their drinks. Also back to gin again, Society do gin tasting platters... correct. Half nips of four different gins (be it a Tasmanian platter, an Australian platter or a tailored platter) with a splash of tonic and a garnish to suit each different gin. A really fun way to try a few different variations in one sitting, because gins can be so different! I LOVE GIN! There are always plenty of events happening at Society too, all posted on their facebook, from regular weekly events like Tapas Tuesday to one-off events like fundraiser dinners and spirit masterclasses.

This Thursday was raclette night and they take bookings for the few tables they have for a 6pm or 8pm seating - we booked 8pm but decided to sit on one of the comfy couches. The raclette was delicious and a generous portion of melted and crispy raclette cheese and prosciutto over potatoes with a bit of salad for $15. There is a huge selection of spirits though we had a nice bottle of Cabernet which was also good value.

I was inducted to the Poltergeist cult early on, winning myself a ticket to their launch party, itself steeped in mystery and excitement at a manor house in Hobart--but it was really my first visit to Shene that got all the pieces falling into place. Ten years ago the Kernkes took up the enormous task of restoring this old estate back to its former glory, and within moments of arriving on site you can tell they've poured their hearts and souls into that task. It's hard to believe that the big beautiful building taking precedence on the site was originally built as a stable for horses--looking at the outside of the building it actually sounds ridiculous. Visiting inside is a different matter, as some of the stables themselves are still standing. The barn next to the stables is the home of the gin bar and has likely already seen countless weddings take place, if not outside on the stones of the courtyard. Behind both these majestic old buildings is a much newer building, home to the distillery. This is where the magic happens! Head distiller Damien Mackey is in charge of both gin and whisky production, producing two gins (well, really it's just one recipe, but sold as both filtered and unfiltered) and Irish-style whiskeys in two copper stills (one roughly ten times as big as the other). There's also the roadside stall, similar to those you'd encounter driving along country roads with berries or flowers, but this one sells Poltergeist gin. That's my idea of a roadside stall. Shene can be hired as an event space or you can just drop in to grab a bottle from the roadside stall but no matter what, you'll want to get up close and personal with this beautiful estate and the utterly delightful humans who keep it running in its current state.

Operating in the warmer seasons on Fridays (and some bonus Sundays), Farm Bar is what it says on the box: a bar at a farm. More importantly, the bar is at 2MT's farm, where they make their delicious ales and ciders, so by now you can probably guess what's in stock at the bar. Correct: you can get a middy or a pint of delicious real ale or cider, kick back, and relax. Food is BYO, DIY -- the only food for purchase is hulking great slabs of 2MT's beer-fed beef and sausages, and there's a BBQ on site for you to cook up immediately (or you can take your meaty treasure home to savour at a later date). So bring your own salads, burger buns, stuff to eat off, chips and dips... you can even bring your own meat, if you want. Just don't forget to bring your own noms out with you. 2MT's Farm Bar is just under an hour's drive from Hobart, just outside of New Norfolk, and if you book ahead then you can score a seat on the #farmbarbus, which means for only $15 return, you're not the designated driver. The bus needs a minimum of 15 pre-bookings to run each Friday night, so make sure you go to 2MT's website (http://www.2mt.com.au/events_farm_bar_bus.html) to put your name on a seat. It's well worth it for a night out at Two Metre Tall's Farm Bar. And who knows... you might even be lucky enough to be allowed entry into the sacred Man Cave. (I'll let you discover that one for yourself.)
