It is very clean. There's plenty of parking. It is especially great for the kids. When we visited they were having outdoor time on the lawn. The library had lots of outdoor toys for the kids to play with along with much for them to do inside too. They have a cockpit of a plane inside this library! There is even dress up items the children can try on while pretending to fly the plane. My son absolutely loves this. Besides the plane there are plenty of toys for the kids to play with. They've got story time too of course. If you have a little they will absolutely love their visit here.

So apparently it's been open for 6 years but it looks like it just opened. When you first arrive to the library there is a great porch area where they have placed rocking chairs so you can enjoy the Colorado sun and delve into a good read. That's not the only thing enjoying some sun here... They have solar panels on the roof! How cool and earth friendly is that?! When I finally made my way inside I was greeted by a friendly clerk who I told I wanted to get my library card. She then asked, "which design would you like?" and gestured to a small display featuring about six different options! Wow! So, with my new library card in hand, I decided to meander the rows of shelves. There were all sorts of great nooks and crannies escape to. While there weren't a ton of books, but you can't expect much in a small town like Bennett. The children's section was large and they had a small playhouse and other interactive experience for the younger kids. Moving across the library to the teen section they had several large bean bags and a bench nook to tuck away in. There's even a fireplace and some great arm chairs for those chilly winter days! I am so excited for my new found library and can't wait to see what other events Anythink has to offer.

Over the past year or so I've made it my mission to test out all of the Denver area public…read morelibraries and find one that's conducive to studying + getting work done on my laptop. IMHO, libraries are better than cafes because they're so much quieter and no one requires you to buy a drink/food to use the Wifi. This particular branch is great for midday work. There's larger tables (that you might have to share, but that's OK) near the kids area, but most little ones are eating lunch or napping between 10:30 am - 1:30 pm. Past 2 pm, it does get a little insane. Kids coming in after school, playing video games, and frazzled parents trying to collect said game players. This is also where I *finally* got a library card. It only took four years to get it together. But it was free and you can immediately check out books, even before you verify your address. I will be back to get stuff done once we're allowed to leave the house for more than necessary trips. For sure.

I retired earlier this year and now I have time to visit the library. My closest branch was the…read moreRoss Broadway that closed Nov 1 for renovations. The next closest is Thunderbird Man on Santa Fe Drive & 8th Ave. It originally opened in 1918 with funds from Andrew Carnegie and was named the Byers Library. The name was changed in 2021 to honor John "Thunderbird Man" Emhoolah Jr for his efforts in creating tribal schools & colleges . If the weather is bad, I drive and park on nearby streets for 2hrs. Otherwise, I walk thru the Baker neighborhood in about 30 min. This branch is open Mon-Fri from 10am-6pm, except Fri when they close at 5pm. This is one of the smaller branches. Everything is on one floor. There is an elevator on the north end to access the main floor and the basement. There is a community room & 2 restrooms on the lower floor. One half of the main floor is for teens. The other side has fiction & nonfiction books + and entire wall of Videos to check out. They also have magazines and 5 days worth of the Denver Post and USA Today to read. There is 4 computer terminals and 4 wing chairs with UBS ports to charge cell phones. I have seen several local and homeless persons taking advantage of the charging stations and the computer terminals.

It is a Carnegie library, constructed in 1918 by father and son architects, Varian & Varian. The style is Spanish eclectic with brick, stone, and painted concrete. The exterior window details and main entrance with highly-decorated arches and columns plus the gabled, tile roof provide a very impressive facade. The interior is a single room with vaulted ceilings, a fireplace, and a mural by Carlota Espinoza (Pasado, Presente, Futuro). The building was restored in 2020-2021 and is in fine condition. This was originally the Byers branch. William N. Byers was the owner/editor of Denver's first newspaper and a vigorous Denver booster. He pushed for a post office in Denver and was the first Denver postmaster. He was a founder of the Denver Tramway Company and constantly promoted infrastructure improvements. He became less active and moved south of town after his mistress tried to shoot him while he and his wife were taking a stroll. Mr. Byers' reputation has fallen out of fashion in recent years due to his promotion and perpetuation of a completely phoney "Indian War." Byers used his newspaper to gin up hysterical rhetoric which led directly to the infamous Sand Creek Massacre in 1864. Byers continued to promote the vicious murder of over 200 peaceful, elderly men, women, and children as a great victory, despite all evidence to the contrary. The branch was renamed for John "Thunderbird Man" Emhoolah, Jr. on October 21, 2021 after considerable community discussion. Mr. Emhoolah was a Kiowa activist also with Arapaho roots and a descendent of survivors of the Sand Creek Massacre. He served in the Korean War and as an engineer at Boeing, but is noted for a 50-year career in Native American studies and education, in Seattle and Denver. He was also a tribal administrator and a prominent community leader, in Denver and nationally.
