No place I would rather spend my time. I enjoy Norlin Library far more than other librariesread more

The Norlin Library is the main library of the University of Colorado at Boulder (yes kidoes, there…read moreare more libraries on campus. In fact there is an entire library system). As a former employee, you all are going to get the inside scoop on this place. Well, the Norlin library's collection is excellent, especially for non-fiction, and is open to the public. The stacks are organized by the library of congress call-system, which is much better than the Dewey-decimal system of course, so things should be fairly easy to find, given all the terminals downstairs that can be used to look up books. The library also has many places to study for you students, and has a serious periodical section for old issues of magazines and newspapers. However, the politics of this place makes the upkeep seriously lacking. The budget is limited - like with everything else with CU - (thank you Republicans) so who gets what resources becomes a personal matter. The re-shelving in particular is fairly poor. This is not because of a lack of dedication by the student-employees nor direct mismanagement from supervisors, but instead is from severe under-employment. What this means is that there is a backorder of books that need to be put back onto the stacks, as well as a large number of missing books. I don't know how many times I've been there looking for a book that the computers tell me is there, but that cannot be found in the stacks and is therefore lost somewhere in the system. Of course the pay for employees of the library isn't exactly stellar either, so this also leads to a problem. So: this place has a huge collection but is not run efficiently or even adequately. A real shame.

The express check-out kiosks for books was a new thing for me, being an old-school lover of old libraries. But it was great! As a mom, I LOVE love the children's wing. The rest of this review will focus on the children's wing only because this is the part of the library where I spend the most time. Fostering a love of reading in a child is important to me, so I was impressed by all the things she can do there. There are well-kept computer stations, a dedicated desk for questions, toys, a working-model scale train exhibit (the zinger that got my kid through their doors), plenty of picture books in front, a private room for events, nooks and corners with pillows for reading, a bilingual reading area, and lovingly-made murals and book comparison charts. There is even a puppet playhouse and comfy couches for parents/adults who like to read while their child roams the shelves. The staff is knowledgeable and kind. I also love the younger kids who volunteer there. There are read-alouds and events for kids during the year, so it's never boring. Lastly, I'm a fan of the books-for-sale section right when you walk through the inner library doors. I always find an interesting book, and for a dollar or two, it's always a great read. Come visit. It's a great investment of your time, brain and dollars.

I came for the annual Peeps diorama exhibition created by local kids. Several creative dioramas…read moreusing historical books and current films. This is the only Longmont library. They have 2 floors of books with teen and kindergarten area, a separate area for computer access. I saw a poetry section, a free puzzle exchange and free food & flower seeds. There are several free parking lots. Free street parking has 2hr limits.

When visiting this beautiful and historic town, this library is a good option if you're looking for something to read while camping or staying in a resort. Why buy and pack books when you don't need to? The computers are on the top floor and there is usually an open computer. The children's reading room is kept separate. This way kids can be kids, attend lively story times, and use their own gaming computers without disrupting the rest of the library. More libraries can take the cue on the face out shelving bins for picture books, too. Kids can quickly browse books like the old bins for vinyl records, but built low for short people access. Yes, it's probably harder to keep these in shelving order, but the circulation is truly higher. The reason for my visit in June was my desperate need to write a paper and submit it online. When the library was closed I was able to sit in the parking lot and work until the wee hours. The police station is adjacent and shares the parking lot.
