Love love love this place for so many reasons…read more You know how when looking at the website of a place and they have all these beautiful photos of their space? Then you get there and it's a dump? You see the essence of the place in the photos, but the reality isn't as ideal. Slo Living Hostel is different. Their photos don't deceive. Their space is beautiful. Other positives: The place is really clean. The rooms are secure. Nothing's falling a part. They have a decent breakfast comparable to other hostels around Lyon and Europe. They have secure WiFi which is really important. They have a beautiful courtyard to gather with others or in which to enjoy a meal. Guest rooms look out over this space. The only negatives is that this hostel isn't located in a neighborhood bustling with a plethora of great restaurants, cafes, shops, and museums. If you're up for the walk, you can get to these places. Or just grab an Uber or take the subway. Slo Living is close to le Rhône which is scenic from either bank and a nice walk over le Rhône to Rue des Marronniers where you can find lots of good, traditional restaurants reasonably priced. Also, during the summer months when it's imperative to keep the windows open, if you're sharing the hostel with one or more smokers then their cigarette smoke will waft into the guest rooms which can be unpleasant especially if you're sensitive to it because of asthma or rhinitis. It doesn't sound like they will change this policy any time soon which is too bad.

This hostel is super clean, cute, and modern with a hipster kinda vibe (pale wood themed, white…read moreaccents). Dorm beds each have a personal lamp, outlet, mini-shelf, four hooks for hanging clothing and even a little mirror! The dorm rooms also have a few small bean bag style chairs so you can sit next to someone's bunk and chat. And there are luggage lockers for each bed, of course. Despite it being a hostel, I felt really comfortable and at ease chilling and had an easy time sleeping at night. I wouldn't mind staying here for an extended period of time (I only stayed two nights) and they seem to have events (e.g. cocktail bar) every night but Sun/Mon. The bunks are constructed such that there is a sense of privacy (no curtains, but the wood strips by the pillow area and ladder by the feet cover your bunk somewhat). Shared floor bathrooms are nice and spacious with very private stalls (floor to ceiling) and showers with an all-purpose wash dispenser provided. The lounge area has some bean bags, bookshelves, and a desktop computer, and is connected to the coffeeshop, which is connected to the guest kitchen (there is also a foosball table by the kitchen). They play pretty good music in the coffeeshop/lounge area so it's nice to chill there in the evening before sleeping.

The cappuccinos were also fantastic and cakes of the day were also very tasty!

An outstanding American style coffee house in Lyon, France…read more * * * So what is the big deal about American style coffee houses in Anywhere, France? Americans can get American coffee in America. France is for French stuff. * * * Well, there is one exception to the rule of France is for French stuff. French coffee is generally bad. I have had expresses and espressos in lots of cafes both on this trip and earlier trips. French espresso is grim stuff. When Starbucks showed up in France, it got a huge popular reaction. Most of this was for wacky flavored coffees such as Pistachio Mint Lattes. But the huge crowds showed a real impatience with lame tame cafe espressos. * * * When French entrepreneurs tried to clone the Starbucks experience, the results were not good. They aped all of the worst aspects of Starbucks coffee without putting anything legitimately good on the table. * * * So the French move into artisanal coffee houses is a very big deal. They follow the American model of having a) outstanding espressos, lattes and alt-coffee drinks and b) having a small but fine menu of breakfast and lunch dishes to make the coffee house a place for a destination meal. Note that not all French artisan coffee places add on Clause c) c) People need to be able to work at the coffee house all day on their computers. The places with really good food actually frown on all-day workers. There is a line out the door of people wanting to eat that really good food. But even with no c), a) and b) are enough to give you a great place. Coffee reform has finally come to France. * * * In the new coffee movement, Slake is a stellar addition. The coffee is amazing - but most of the new coffee houses have that. What sets Slake apart is food that is absolutely positively outstanding. I had a set of Turkish eggs - which were one of the best breakfasts I had in the entire trip to Lyon. My wife did even better with a one-off special - an Indonesian pancake with caramel flour. I died and went to heaven off the one taste of pancake I got. My wife was singing with the angels and flying around the Gates of Radiant Light. A quick look at the other tables suggested that there is legendary French toast to be had as well as a number of other absolutely intriguing treats. * * * There is a line to get into Slake. Don't come expecting immediate gratification - And get out when you are done with your meal. But in return for that The Great Gods of Java will show you the Resplendent Wonders of Their Kingdom once you ditch the cheap espresso.
