When we stumbled into Fopp in Covent Garden, I was immediately in love. Not only did they have a ton of vinyl, band tees and movies on display, they had an impressive selection of really great books at super reasonable prices. I ended up picking up a copy of A Clockwork Orange and American Psycho on the cheap - something that I've been wanting, but now had no excuse. There are multiple floors to explore. Left my group that I was with and took off to the other side of the city and found this place. It was perfect. Spent a bunch of time talking to the staff and some other patrons about punk in the US and the UK and got some great local recommendations from them (though wish someone had recommended Frank Turner to me then - I was practically on his doorstep and now I love him lol). Difficult to define is this one. Up until quite recently it actually was a normal corner shop, and it still retains a drinks fridge and some chocolate bars. But what the shop now concentrates on is an extremely eclectic selection of films on some very odd formats. For example, if you have been searching for that special edition of Jurassic Park on VideoDisc, look no more. VideoDisc, for those of you that don't know, is an obselete way of viewing films using vinyl. There are also lots of real cinema canisters with accompanying projectors, as well as 8mm cameras and paraphenalia. Soundtracks come in the form of a towering pile of old LPs. There are also plentiful DVDs and VHS. Titles in these formats tend to be either B-movies, soft porn, Turkish in origin. Lots of the equipment is also available for rent. It's a very unique shop, run by Umit, an eccentric Turkish guy. He seems grumpy at first but is full of random info if you catch him on a good day and he is willing to chat. As well as a real trove of odds and ends that you can spend ages just staring at, Umit will transfer your old films to digital format and will even come and project real, flickery cinema reels onto your wall.

I hit up a couple Flashback locations but this one was definitely my favorite. It had some of the UK stuff that I was looking for, (I hail from the US), and at reasonable prices. I was in the shop for about an hour pursuing my sections/artists and taking second looks at the items in my stack and the employees let me do my thing and didn't bother me, which is always really appreciated. All of the stuff that I was looking for was on the main level, but they do have more vinyl in the basement, which is where I paid for my items. The employees were nice and understood that it was my first time in their shop and I didn't know the process of things. I loved this record shop and will definitely stop by here when I'm in London again!

They also sell jukebox records and memorabilia, which is all reasonably priced. They also have a website and links on amazon and ebay, so if you want to see what's in store before you go, it's helpful in that respect. I have seen it shut once or twice, so you may want to check out opening times before you go, but it's a great little place for vintage music.

My friend Robert and I had to visit it while on a long layover in London. Despite its dilapidated state and small size, Rough Trade's undeniable charm was evident in every corner. It's a treasure trove for indie and obscure music! However, I must admit that the physical state of the store left me longing for more. It's not as impressive as the one in New York! We didn't buy anything though, we've never heard of some of the bands that were on display. lol
