Movies are arranged by genre or country - I was impressed when I found my favorite movie ever, Le cercle rouge, in plain sight. The selection is huge thanks to a downstairs storage room. I was let down by the rental policy: you need an account to rent, and you need a credit or debit card to set up an account. I didn't have any plastic cards with me, so I was unable to rent. But I was able to purchase City of God as they accept cash for purchases, so all is well. It's nice to be able to rent DVDs like we all used to.

This little shop is worshipped by locals and for good reason - the staff, unbelievably knowledgeable, remembers faces and runs the place like a friendly, neighbourhood pub. They'll have a chat and are happy to order anything you'd like (in the film genre of course). Film/dvd rental shops are a dying breed, and it takes a gem like Video City to stay alive.

The item arrived damaged 3 or 4 days late. They tried to be awkward by refusing to refund me & only refund me by debit card. I told them they are NOT having my card details & it was absolutely absurd, at this point the manager Ross from Coventry HMV store started being abusive making accusatory comments about the tone in my voice. I have autism & I don't feel I was rude in any way. I was trying to state a fact which was misinterpreted as me being rude. The only time I was rude to HMV was when I was provoked. I've experienced discrimination as well with the staff making inappropriate comments about the way I was dressed which I felt isn't relevant & completely inappropriate. I do think stores like HMV unfortunately abuse vulnerable customers because they think they can get away with it. Their customer services via phone is absolutely awful & very unhelpful. I would urge anyone, simply don't do business with them at all, they don't care about you as the customer. They don't deserve any customers at all with they treated me.

My only other experience with HMV in Vancouver, British Columbia Canada which used to be a Virgin Megastore (one of Sir Robert Branson's spinoffs). So, by comparison, this store is about 1/4 the size of the Vancouver location. The staff appear pretty friendly and helpful without being overbearing. They allow you to walk in the store and to get your bearing before chiming in with their "Can I help you..." mantra. The store is laid out as most music stores with CD's sorted by genre and alphabetized within the genre. The selection of DVD and Bluray is smaller than I expected. Additionally, some of the staff is not familiar with the region coding issues that can occur when you buy DVD media in countries other than those you reside. They do, however, seem to understand PAL vs. NTSC. Unlike it's Vancouver counterpart, it did not have as many accessories for music players (but this is probably because of the small size). The music is not played loudly and the lighting is adequate so the store atmosphere is pleasant. There is not an abundance of over-advertising of movies or music as I would have expected as I have seen in other non-HMV stores. Converting British Pounds to the US/Canadian dollar, there were actually many cheaper products than buying them in the US/Canada. Hopefully, the store is still there when I make my next trip to London as I will do my homework on movies and such to determine if I can play purchases on my home system.

"London Is The Place For me. In the chaos of me chucking records from the racks at them they accidently pout the discs for parts 1 and 2 in the covers. When I rang to ask if they could sell me the discs for 3 & 4 in the sleave for 1 & 2, they refused, but just said: " No we will post the correct disks and sleave to make upo the set free of charge. I was taken here once by a boy, this boy was in a band and it was an oh so cool day out. We mooched around the market and stumbled upon this gem. We even found his records on the shelves, but apparently it's uncool to point that out. In an area that is overwhelmed with the wealthy and tourists this is a hidden gem that shows you what Notting Hill was like before the movie, before Hugh Grant and his stupid hair cut ruined it all. Serious music lovers, don't expect racks and racks for fabulous music. It's a small selection of perfectly picked records that are icon and important and need to be heard. Die hard music fans only.

I'd say if anything they compromise on depth in any one genre and go for real breadth. Most of the classics from the US and UK scene are here plus they've got quite a bit of New Wave and Punk. There's CDs & Vinyl, LPs, 45s and also a good stash of memorabilia and posters. Come too if you want to get rid of anything - they buy at pretty decent prices.

Situated in the same shop as Minus Zero, Stand Out is also run by a guy called Bill (a different…read moreone). In similar fashion it's like a museum of rare vinyl and music and contains an extraordinary selection of impossible-to-find stuff. The stuff on sale contrasts a little with the Bill across the other side of the shop but there is some crossover and duplicate stuff. The same rather superior attitude is found here and you do get the feeling the shop is doing you a favour rather than the other way round. But the music is great and prices aren't as crazy as you might expect. One for the browsers rather than the banter seeker.

Left my group that I was with and took off to the other side of the city and found this place. It was perfect. Spent a bunch of time talking to the staff and some other patrons about punk in the US and the UK and got some great local recommendations from them (though wish someone had recommended Frank Turner to me then - I was practically on his doorstep and now I love him lol). Ok the selection of records isn't as vast as gargantuan as other vinyl-only shops. But it's a very mean selection. And not a lot of rubbish getting sold here. But the CDs... the CDs... Unreal, I have never come across such a variety of styles, types, big names and big albums. And they are selling them for cheaper prices than I have ever seen. So it's really not unlikely that you'll find, say, Blood Sugar Sex Magik for £3. And I think that's pretty good. But best of all for me, is lining the walls, are rarities, boxed sets, unheard of Japanese imports, the things collectors dream about. So I've found most of my rare Manic Street Preachers singles here. And sure, I paid £85 for their CD of Motown Junk. But the only time I have ever seen it is in this shop. So for that reason, I'm forever indebted... MMM the smell of good music

Two or three times now ive had run ins with staff and today was no exception. After asking about a pair of jeans the guy decided to dissect the pair as if it were not a pair of jeans but in fact the Noah's Ark. I just want a little discount i dont want to have to stand there while you scroll through the internet trying to decide whether the damage on the jeans is intentional or whether the second colour stitching should make it more valuable that your other colleague has already priced it. You can give me £2 off a pair of jeans youv'e had in the store for over a year with the other probable 1000 pairs you haven't sold. Get a grip for god's sake. Its a miracle this business has lasted so long, it merely survives on acting as a porn brokers, ripping off the poor by buying their belongs for pennies and ripping of the naive by charging inflating prices.... 0 stars from me, sorry to the staff that are cool enough.
