I don't like their points award program in which you receive one point for ever dollar you spend. You have to spend $1,000.00 (1,000 points) in order to get only $10.00 back in credit. Woah. I lived a mere 3 miles from this H-mart for the past 4 years and I've only discovered it NOW?! Of course, it's behind Lakeforest Mall, tucked in the sketchtastic strip mall that hosts a laundromat, bail bonds store, and an AYCE Chinese buffet that not even my dad can stomach. So, one has to understand how I could completely miss this place, as I try to drive past it as fast as humanly possible. But like most things in my life, due to a random happenstance of events, I ended up discovering this H-Mart...and loving it! I love the selection of fruits and veggies - where else can I find broccolini, patty-pan squashes, key-limes and rabe...all for under $1.99/lb? Good selection of whole fish and odd cuts of meat. I do find that the prices at Lotte is more competitive, but this is so much closer, that I find myself visiting H-Mart far more often. However, there are a few things to note, if one wishes to successfully shop here: 1) Don't ask the workers any questions in English - especially if it's something like "where is the soy milk?" because no one will be able to answer you and each one will send you down a different aisle - none of which will have what you're looking for (FYI - the soymilk is in the tofu case, in the produce section, next to the tomatoes). 2) Don't bring Alicia G here, because you will get into a 15 minute argument over what is Chinese black vinegar. This argument will spill over to twitter and FB, and you will be perilously close to getting unfriended. 3) Bring your own shopping bag, as they will refund 10 cents (as opposed to 5, from Giant or Safeway). 4) Like Lotte, do NOT try to talk to the fishmongers. Conversations like "is the salmon farm raised or wild?" will get you blank and angry stares. Instead just point to the fish you want, call out the number (the style you would like it cleaned/gutted), and then murmur a "thank you". If you're not sure about something, roll the dice and see if you feel lucky. 5) BEST KIMCHI EVER! They make their own kimchi, and sometimes you will see them mixing it. In addition, they actually use raw oysters as part of the seasoning/fermentation, which makes it OMG especially flavorful. If you get the heebie-jeebies about fermented foods with shellfish...please turn around, leave and unfriend me please. All in all, much better then the Lotte on Georgia Ave, but not quite as awesome as the Lotte in Germantown. Still, I'm super duper glad that it's close by because it makes grocery shopping much faster. read more

THIS PLACE IS GROSS. All the sales are of rotten foods. I was going to buy a bundle of seedless grapes and when I picked up the bag, I saw mold covering the bottom of the bag!! MOLD. GROSS WHITE RAPIDLY PRODUCING MOLD!! I proceeded to pick up the next bag, and there it was again. They were selling MOLDING grapes!!! I cannot believe them for putting it on the shelves and selling it to their customers. I was absolutely horrified! What if my poor mother had picked it up and didn't notice them, and proceeded to purchase them and god forbid, ate them!! There is no excuse--supermarkets should not be putting molding food on sale. Not only that, their oyster mushrooms! All the stems were sogging in gross water. It was disgusting, Squeeze the stem and you feel dirty water oozing out. Over half the weight was probably the dirty water content seeping through the roots. No thanks! Yes, their vegetables may be cheaper, but everything was so dirty!! There was sand all over all the greens! Sand, sand, everywhere. I felt like I was in a giant sandpit. Couldn't they have rinsed it off or even shake it off even a little bit. It felt like they poured sand all over the vegetables right before display. I have nothing against not sandy vegetables, but I've never seen THIS much sand. I proceeded to the next item, kiwis. I thought two myself, ohh nice 10 cute baby kiwis for just one dollar! What a deal. But after closer examination of the kiwi, I realized all those kiwis looked like they were diseased! Diseased kiwis on sale!! All of them had weird black spots on them, and most were losing its fuzziness. Say no to bald, diseased kiwis! Next, they also have a pretty limited and overpriced dessert section. I wanted mochi ice cream, and it was $6+. I get the same brand mochi green tea ice cream at Trader Joes for only $3. That's ridiculous this asian supermarket would double the prices for their own "asian" goods!! Lastly, this place truly lacks professionalism. There was a rude young cashier that gave my sweet mother AN ATTITUDE upon check-out. Get your attitude problems straightened out before working in customer service people. Conclusion: All the "great sales" are of diseased, bad quality, dirty, or molding products. Indeed, there is a lot of selection there, and the prices may be cheaper for some items. H-Mart. Heaven-Mart. Hell of a lot of amazing food and the best prices-Mart How I love thee-Mart. On our Sunday grocery excursions we started out by going to Giant. Then I noticed the TJs near by so we started going there, as well. Then I noticed the H-Mart and remembered hearing such lovely things so we popped in yesterday. I heart H mart. $5 for a pound of shrimp! Feel a little frisky and want to try something new? Grab some octopus and salted squid, wild caught lobster for $4.99/lb or a live tilapia! This place is amazing. Every where I turned there was something new to ooh and aah at. Not only are the fish fresh and beyond affordable, but the sheer amount of unique choices makes this place the happiest place on earth (move over Disney). Produce is stocked and cheap, $0.25 large cucumbers, crisp snap pea pods and a variety of Asian foods that I am glad have English attached for my uncultured ass. I love the mixed ethnic feel. It is like a regular grocery store, but in reverse discrimination. The America foods get their aisle and the international foods rule the store. This store makes me want to be a better cook. This is a place which excels in variety but not necessarily in quality. You have to look hard, but high quality items are there to be found. HMART is a great option for hard to find asian grocery items and also for cheap cuts of meat. You can get things like Thai basil/eggplant, kaffir lime leaves, and excellent pastes for making curries. There are a huge number of types of fish available, and also most popular meats such as chicken, pork, and beef. I wouldn't say that the meat (beef in particular) is top grade but you can find some really good items at low prices. You will also find a wide variety of pan asian produce here. The quality of the unpackaged fresh produce is below par when compared to similar items at a place like giant but usually you can find items that are fresh and clean if you look properly. I wouldn't go here for items that I know can be found elsewhere, but there are plenty of items here that cannot be found in other places, and they are typically of high quality. read more

You get what you pay for. Produce and meat are SUPER cheap, but you do have to inspect to make sure they are clean. The place is a madhouse on weekends--which could be an adventure or just plain stressful depending on your point of view. Whenever I go on the weekend I have to wait for someone exiting to empty their cart because they run out of carts. But hey, I like to be thrifty and you can find just about anything you need if you wander long enough. As other reviewers have mentioned, the organization is confusing. But again, you get what you pay for. I like coming to an Asian grocery store for cheaper pricing on fruits, vegetables, and imported items. There is a small beauty/cosmetics section that sells sheet masks. The selection is minimal, but the prices are decent. The aisles are categorized by item type and it can be overwhelming if you are not familiar with all the different brands and choices offered. For instance, the dry noodle section is located near instant noodles and the choices are endless. It really depends on what you are cooking and what taste you prefer. The staff here are not the best at customer service, so you are pretty much on your own. The parking lot can get a little congested since the store is located in a busy shopping center. read more

I am very disappointed at the customer service at this location. If there are negative stars to give, they will received a three negative stars. My wife and I went shopping yesterday, bought some groceries including a 2.15 lb. Korean radish at ninety-nine cents a pound. When we got home, (not to mention we lived in Frederick, so it's inconvenient to go back right away) my wife put away the groceries and notice that she's missing the radish for her kimchi recipe. We checked the receipt and yes, were charged for the radish. Today, I called the store to let them know, not because we want another radish, but simple to see how they really treat their customers. Guess what they said to me, "you lost it. You lost it"! Repeating it over and over again. Omg! She didn't even hear me out before making an accusation. How can one loose their grocery? Therefore, what she is saying is that, Korean radish has a magical way of just disappearing on the people that buy them. I can't not even believe what I was hearing. To top this off, she hung up on me! Omg! We vowed never to go here again. Thus, the only reason we went was because we received a coupon book from them. The next time they send us another one, we will trash it in a heart beat. We do have an Asian market in Frederick too. They just lost two very valuable customers. A hundred bucks, with more than enough food to last the week. I would even cancel my Costco Card if it wasn't for the their cheap books. Anyways, you gotta make your weekly rounds, because you never know what will be there. Live Lobster, I bought 11 of them for $55 dollars. Live Stone Crab, Sweet and cheap. Octopus, I think I over cooked it. Mamong, fresh not frozen! Lychee and Longan, not bagged, and no pushy vendor in new york to give you all the rotten ones. Live Blue crab for 99 cents a pound. Cheaper than by the Anacostia river! Mussels for $2.99. Cheaper than Costco. Sugar and Yellow Watermelon that is less than the Farmers Market. Fresh Sugar Cane Fresh Tamarind Fresh Coconut Burro Bananas, Green plantains for your tostones, the Mini-me bananas Lactaid Milk that is cheaper than Trader Joe's El Rio Elote Corn Tamales are awesome when they have it. The problem is knowing how to cook all weird stuff. H Mart is probably the best way to stretch your dollar in a recession, without living on water and popcorn. read more

Disclaimer: I only shop here for produce and "exotic" foods. Why? Because the price of produce is unbeatable, and the variety is second to none. As far as "exotic" stuff, there's so many common ingredients for different ethnic cooking that you can't buy at the regular grocery stores, but can find at H-Mart (especially for Latino & Asian cooking). Does it smell funny here? Absolutely. Are you likely to get stuck in line longer than usual because of a dispute between a customer and a cashier who speak two different languages? Probably. Is the express lane either closed or filled with people way over the 10 or 15 item limit? Yep, every time I've been there. But compare the prices of produce at H-Mart versus those of your local major supermarket chain (yes, I'm talking about you, Giant and Safeway), and you'll find that those supermarket's prices are nothing short of grand larceny. read more

And you definitely want to go earlier in the week because I went here on a Saturday I think and some of the veggies were bruised and some even moldy! BUT, we did go earlier in the week, I guess when they restocked and most of the produces were fresh and of course cheaper here than other places. Just wish it was a bit more organized. The only reason I keep coming to this location is for the no MSG bagged kimchi and a couple prepared side dishes from Tobagi (next to the prepared foods). If I can find the same kimchi at another MoCo Korean market, I'd probably never set foot here. Unfortunately, the market closest to me doesn't carry the brand. The customer service at this location is absolutely horrible, especially at the check out lanes and at the customer service desk. They give absolutely no consideration to their customers, and their default is to argue with the customers instead of trying to find a way to accommodate them. What a discovery this was. I just moved to the area and love to cook. I've been on an Asian cuisine kick for some time and haven't been able to find all my ingredients. I checked Yelp and went to H Mart. What a smorgasbord of items. I thought the produce looked better than average and they had all items on my list. I was surprised to see some of the same things from my regular grocery store (Giant). H Mart could almost be one-stop shopping. The fish counter looked amazing and I will be returning to take a closer look. Prices were lower than at Giant. I was able to find huge amounts of herbs for a fraction of the cost at other stores. Even ingredients I was expecting to have to buy frozen I found fresh such as Galangal and lime leaves. I only gave this 4 stars because it was difficult to get help finding certain products. The staff was not eager to assist and offered confusing instructions. Looking forward to becoming more familiar with the products offered and where they are located. read more

I discovered this place a couple years ago when I started getting into Asian cuisine. It is the absolute best place to go for exotic food. I've lived in Japan, and I really missed some of the items I could easily find in any Japanese supermarket. Pocky for example, or inexpensive packets of nori for making onigiri (rice balls). It's also the only place w I've also missed loose leaf green tea, which is basically impossible to find in any other supermarket. I'm sorry, Twinings just doesn't cut it in this case. The only downside to this place is that it feels a little dirty, and maybe there are people who buy fish or meat here, but I wouldn't. My father is a manager at Weis and is food safety certified, and he cringes whenever he walks in there. It's fine though if you're getting food that's already packaged, and as far as I know their fruits and vegetables are perfectly fine. Just don't go for anything too perishable. read more

I'm EXTREMELY IMPRESSED with the broad selection of foods in each of the three departments; the variety of fish/shellfish, fruits/vegetables and meats are remarkable and competitively priced. My wife has been searching for a local, fresh seafood market without having to travel to the District. Look no further as HMART offers such fresh seafood, a far-cry of those unremarkable overpriced seafood selections customarily sold in local supermarket chains: Giant, Safeway, Food Lion, etc. The seafood is professionally scaled, gutted and cleaned. The produce department was equally IMPRESSIVE, offering a broad variety of standard fruits and vegetables in addition to popular fruits and vegetables customarily used in Asian cuisine and/or recipes. The meat department also reflects the broad choice selection of fine foods found in the seafood and produce department. A wide selection of Asian food-staples include: tofu, soy milk, noodles, spices, sauces, and snacks/deserts; the price on tofu, for example, SOO MUCH CHEAPER than the limited supply of OVERPRICED foods found in your local grocery store chain. If you're looking to save money on fresh produce, seafood and meats, and who isn't, I would highly recommend you visit HMART. The selection of food is indeed IMPRESSIVE and the prices very competitive. It's our local grocery store for international food. I love this store. It carries some of my favorite fruits and vegetables for a really affordable price. Their price is always reasonable even without the sale. They carry a lot of Asian brand food that I can't find at my local American store. They have some of the freshest fish if that's what you are in the mood for. It's also based to favor the Latin people also. They have a small Spanish bakery inside the store in the front. Living in WV for the past few years must have really wrecked my priorities- the fact that I now have a Korean market nearby makes me all giddy inside. I think they can work on their produce selection (as in freshness) but they have a huge range of different veggies & fruits. The cost per pound for the meat makes me sweat a little, but quality is great. I hate giving bad reviews but I have to with this one. I like Hmart a lot, no really I do. Unfortunately after today I will no longer be shopping with this company. I went shopping for a few customers through instacart and the experience was horrific. The card was declined stating not enough funds. Not a problem. I asked the cashier if we can try debit instead. She stated there's not enough money on the card. What?? I asked again. She stated go ahead try. I did. There's no option for debit. I explained that sometimes if the transaction is declined via credit it'll be approved as debit. Again no option. At this point I'm thinking the system is not updated properly because I've never had this problem at any other store I've been to. Again, not a problem. I attempted to call customer service for instacart but the hold time was long. So I decided to try one more time. Maybe if I cancel the first order and rescan everything we'll have a different outcome. (Me being the troubleshooter I am )So I kindly asked if she can cancel the whole transaction. First if looks can kill I would have been dead. Secondly the way she proceeded to toss, yes, toss the items from the bags to the counter man listen I thought she was playing softball with herself. I went to customer service to see if I can troubleshoot with them instead. Nope big no no. Nasty, nasty, nasty! The lady threw some one else's returns in my cart stating I didn't pay. Ok so, what about these items over here on the counter? Can you help me? Smh. I can go on and on about this experience. They had so much inexpensive, fresh produce that I thought I had died and went to grocery store heaven. Fresh curry leaves...check. Celery root...check. Lemongrass...1.99 a lb check. Baby thai eggplants...check. Indian bitter melon.....well you get the idea. Seafood was awesome too. Whole fresh fish packed on ice and fishmongers just waiting to take your order. They will scale, fillet, and gut a fish for you right in front of your eyes or cut it up any way that you request. Tons of great Asian dry goods as well. Oh and the place is cheap! My mom was asking the cashier which button to press for credit and the cashier said with an attitude "I don't know, that's your credit card. Figure it out." This is really a poorly kept H-Mart. Being from NJ, H-mart is the cleanest, brightest, and on point asian grocery store. Everything is normally organized, and the cheapest you can find. So when I came upon this one, I was a little taken back by their organization: the fish area was filled with tubing and random freezers in the middle of the aisle; they don't have a raw meat bar, instead they have the marinated pre packaged meat with the regular raw meat. The floors were dirty, and even the greens aren't as well kept as I'm use to at other H-marts. The pricing are still on the same level (cheap to cheaper), and they do have a great variety of times. Like any other asian grocery store, there is almost zero waiting on line. They just need to step up their seafood organization and clean the freaking floors! read more

Cashers were so stupid that they could not do the basic math even though elementary school students can do that. Fish guys were so stupid that they gave me the rotten fishes.
