When I was growing up, there was a bakeshop a block away from our house that sold the best pianono that I have ever tasted. The store had closed down a long time ago and I have not really found any bakery or restaurant -- big or small -- that sells the same kind of pastry. I even asked my brother's chef girlfriend to recreate the pianono based on my descriptions, but so far she's also finding it difficult to achieve the texture that I want.
One store that sells pastry that closely resembles the pianono of my childhood is Hizon's Cakes and Pastries, specifically the one located at the SM Mall of Asia. In appearance, Hizon's egg roll looks very much like the pianono I'm talking about. But as to taste and texture, their pañolon hits the spot.
Other desserts that the store is known for include ensaymada, brownies, sans rival, Brazo de Mercedes, toasted yema cake, chocolate cake, egg pie, and caramel cake. read more
