Breakfast was cold like it had been sitting for ten minutes before being served and it took awhile to get it. Even if breakfast would have been hot it is nothing special. We stopped by The Hitchin Post for lunch today. It's been a while since I've been that way too, but we made an extended day trip today through some of rural Iowa. Warren, Clarke, Madison, Adair, and Dallas Counties... It was on the route. The place hasn't changed much. It still has that old school feel. Same combinations of booths and low tops in the dining room area. It looks like they've updated their ordering and point of sale system. I'll tell you what though... If you don't care about the decor and you just want a good no frills breakfast and comfort food for lunch and dinner... This is a stop for you. I went with the large breaded tenderloin, fries, and a side of chili and cheese sauce. I wanted a chili and cheese tenderloin and that's how I accomplished it. Heather went with the chili dog and cottage cheese as her side. With two lemonades our total was $29 and change before tip. The sides of chili and cheese sauce were about $5, but sometimes you want what you want...and it's worth paying for. The picture doesn't really do the tenderloin justice. If I spread my fingers wide my hand would only cover about 3/4 of it. Heather's dog was a large all beef hot dog smothered in chili and cheese. Everything was cooked perfectly. Our server was new. She'd been there only three days, but she did a great job. She had a more tenured server (or maybe a manager) shadowing her. I went to the Hitchin post grill with my family and had nothing but a great time. First off the breakfast food here is flat out amazing. This place is a hidden jem!! I got the pancakes and sausage breakfast pizza. The pizza was so good I over ate and had none left. The pancakes were very light and fluffy with great syrup. This place is old but great and has very cool people around it. The service here was very solid too they didn't mess anything up and were very quick with thing and gave us the perfect amount of time and a good experience!! read more

A neighbor of ours told us about this place and said they had great food, whether for breakfast, lunch, or dinner. So, we decided we needed to try it and see for ourselves. To most, this place in "out in the boondocks" but it's only ten miles from our house, just down I-35. It's not the most eye catching place but I found it charming. The inside is comprised of two areas, the bar and the dining room. The bar seems to be larger than the dining room. If I recall correctly, there are nine total tables in the dining room (three of them booths) and a salad bar. So not a ton of room. The decor is mostly horses which thrilled our toddler. All of the tables were full around 6:00 pm, then they emptied and were full again by 7:30 pm. We were there for both, part of the joy of having a slow eating child! The menu is comprised of lots of homemade goodness! Everything from fried chicken to meatloaf to pizza. I opted for the Hot Tenderloin which is bread, deep fried tenderloin, REAL mashed potatoes (made with red potatoes), and gravy (brown or country). My husband had the four piece fried chicken with steak fries (also came with a salad and bread). We ordered the kid's spaghetti for our daughter. The salad was of good size and had green peppers, onion, cheese, and a pepper. My husband really enjoyed his fried chicken and even ranked it as the second best he's had in the Des Moines area! My tenderloin was a bit dryer than I prefer. I did get the gravy on the side and dipped it in. In hindsight, maybe I should have had it smothered and not on the side. Our daughter didn't eat much of her spaghetti but I enjoyed it the next day for lunch. The staff was so friendly! Our waitress was so willing to do anything to help us with our daughter. She offered to put her sippy cup through the dishwasher and although we declined, it was a nice gesture. The prices are reasonable. For the three meals we paid $26 before tip. But people who try to eat here need to be aware when you see reviews that say, "may have to wait a long time for food," that means it could be a normal wait time or it could be over an hour (and still no food). This place is worth the 30min drive from my place. It's just...good food! No frills, no "fusion" nothing, just plain-ol good American comfort food. We ordered the broasted chicken w/ homemade mashed potatoes and white gravy, complete with a buttered piece of Texas toast. The chicken was so juicy and flavorful, not overcooked and dried out. Potatoes were the real deal, no boxed powder nothing here! We also ordered a 12oz rare prime rib dinner with fries, stone ground horseradish and amazing au jus on the side. Tender cut, flavorful, yum. The house salad was one of the best little house salads I've had, complete with lots of diced veggies under a mound of cheese. And the tuxedo brownie was rich and delicious. Already cannot wait to go back here! I want to try the fish fry next time. Aaaaaaaand now I'm drooling. read more

The Hitchin Post is a oasis of Western culture just south of central Iowa. Beautiful vintage decor, including blankets and skulls, furnish the walls. There is a room off to the side for one to have a meal, a bar as well to get a drink and seats outside to catch a cool breeze before you hop back on I-35! The waitress was well mannered and helpful with the menu. A great spot for those at the Hinterland music festival as it's only a 10 minute drive from St. Charles. What a difference a couple years make. Had a favorite stop for a great steak sandwich until it closed. Came across the hitching post and was pleasantly suprised by their prime rib sandwich. Nice thick 1/4 to 1/2 inch slice of prime rib. Hardly any fat, tender, cooked perfectly juicy sandwich. Two years and some odd days later in the area and order my old favorite to go. I get a flat as hell, fatty, tasteless, what little meat was to b had tough as nails, ugly nasty sandwich. What a major disappointment and even more so believe the price had gone up a couple bucks. Great greasy spoon joint right off the highway - we stopped here for breakfast on a recent trip from DesMoines to Kansas City. The place was pretty full at 9am on a Saturday - even the bar had very few open stools. The food was a little slow to arrive, but delicious and reasonably priced. The menu was not overwhelming like a lot of breakfast places, but it had everything you could want all at a good price. We stopped here based on the good help reviews while driving though from Texas. The food was good, but nothing spectacular. The pricing is awesome, but there is no atmosphere to speak of. Half the restaurant is a bar, so I wouldn't consider it a kid friendly place in the evenings. My wife definitely got uneasy towards the end of our meal, and wanted to get our daughter out of there quickly. I got the fried pork tenderloin, which I didn't care for much. However, I saw some guys at the table next to me order some fried chicken that looked delicious. I wish I had ordered that. The waitress was friendly. If I ever drive through Iowa again I might stop there again just for that fried chicken. My wife said she would rate the place three stars, but based on pricing I think it deserves four. read more

I have been coming here for 20 plus years and it used to be a great place to go. Over the last year the food and servive has declined. My husband and I usually go every Friday and once during the week. Tonight we had a new bartender ignore us, and give us attitude, came took my order only and ignored Rick.This was after she took the order of a table that had just sat down. We waited ten minutes I stepped up to the bar to ask her to take his order and she completely ignored me. I chased down another waitress, told her the story, paid for my tea and left. We tip really well too. Due to the steady decline and lack of decent staff we are done with Hitchin Post. Its really a shame and we spent quite a bit of money weekly as well as told alot of people to try it. read more

We were on our way back to Kansas from Canada on a fishing trip when we decided to stop for a quick bite at this exit. We saw the Hitching Post by the local Come and Go gas station, (you Know, the one not spelled that way.) it looked like a local watering hole and restaraunt (breakfast , lunch, and dinner) and had quite a few Iowa tags at 2:00 in afternoon on a Sunday ( the locals always know!). My daughter ordered off the kids menu (spaghetti was great and fresh)and my son and I ordered fried chicken...salads were fresh and awesome with fresh chopped carrots, green peppers, onions, and tomatoes with fresh lettuce and shredded cheese blend. The fried chicken was fresh and tasty, potatoes which were baked and steak fries were perfect all served with Texas toast that was wonderful. My son and daughter spied a board with pie with some interesting choices....my daughter chose cherry, my son German chocolate and I chose a lemon berry, all were homemade by a local woman I was told and they were fresh, amazing and we all loved the pie and the meal. Service was quick and friendly, prices reasonable and restrooms clean. Old building , great food, been under current ownership for 21 years I was told. Great old school country roadside bar and grill! The chicken fried steak was A+ and the hot roast beef with potatoes and brown gravy was true comfort food for this road weary traveler.
