Large breaded tenderloin with fries and a side of chili and cheese sauce.
    Dan T.

We stopped by The Hitchin Post for lunch today. It's been a while since I've been that way too, but we made an extended day trip today through some of rural Iowa. Warren, Clarke, Madison, Adair, and Dallas Counties... It was on the route. The place hasn't changed much. It still has that old school feel. Same combinations of booths and low tops in the dining room area. It looks like they've updated their ordering and point of sale system. I'll tell you what though... If you don't care about the decor and you just want a good no frills breakfast and comfort food for lunch and dinner... This is a stop for you. I went with the large breaded tenderloin, fries, and a side of chili and cheese sauce. I wanted a chili and cheese tenderloin and that's how I accomplished it. Heather went with the chili dog and cottage cheese as her side. With two lemonades our total was $29 and change before tip. The sides of chili and cheese sauce were about $5, but sometimes you want what you want...and it's worth paying for. The picture doesn't really do the tenderloin justice. If I spread my fingers wide my hand would only cover about 3/4 of it. Heather's dog was a large all beef hot dog smothered in chili and cheese. Everything was cooked perfectly. Our server was new. She'd been there only three days, but she did a great job. She had a more tenured server (or maybe a manager) shadowing her. Both ladies checked on us multiple times and we left to complete the rest of our trip full and happy.

I went to the Hitchin post grill with my family and had nothing but a great time. First off the breakfast food here is flat out amazing. This place is a hidden jem!! I got the pancakes and sausage breakfast pizza. The pizza was so good I over ate and had none left. The pancakes were very light and fluffy with great syrup. This place is old but great and has very cool people around it. The service here was very solid too they didn't mess anything up and were very quick with thing and gave us the perfect amount of time and a good experience!!

We went here for brunch late Saturday morning. it was 11:40. I was really wanting lunch, but they didn't start serving that until noon, so I ordered the chicken fried steak with hashbrowns with onions on top. it was good. service was good, polite and efficient.

A neighbor of ours told us about this place and said they had great food, whether for breakfast, lunch, or dinner. So, we decided we needed to try it and see for ourselves. To most, this place in "out in the boondocks" but it's only ten miles from our house, just down I-35. It's not the most eye catching place but I found it charming. The inside is comprised of two areas, the bar and the dining room. The bar seems to be larger than the dining room. If I recall correctly, there are nine total tables in the dining room (three of them booths) and a salad bar. So not a ton of room. The decor is mostly horses which thrilled our toddler. All of the tables were full around 6:00 pm, then they emptied and were full again by 7:30 pm. We were there for both, part of the joy of having a slow eating child! The menu is comprised of lots of homemade goodness! Everything from fried chicken to meatloaf to pizza. I opted for the Hot Tenderloin which is bread, deep fried tenderloin, REAL mashed potatoes (made with red potatoes), and gravy (brown or country). My husband had the four piece fried chicken with steak fries (also came with a salad and bread). We ordered the kid's spaghetti for our daughter. The salad was of good size and had green peppers, onion, cheese, and a pepper. My husband really enjoyed his fried chicken and even ranked it as the second best he's had in the Des Moines area! My tenderloin was a bit dryer than I prefer. I did get the gravy on the side and dipped it in. In hindsight, maybe I should have had it smothered and not on the side. Our daughter didn't eat much of her spaghetti but I enjoyed it the next day for lunch. The staff was so friendly! Our waitress was so willing to do anything to help us with our daughter. She offered to put her sippy cup through the dishwasher and although we declined, it was a nice gesture. The prices are reasonable. For the three meals we paid $26 before tip. I'm sure we'll be back!

Had breakfast this morning and it was delicious. Server was excellent. Just a little pricey for small town restaurants.

Anyhow, we arrived and elected to sit at the bar versus a booth. Took a couple minutes to get noticed and we were asked to sit at the other end of the bar due to some clutter... Prices are very reasonable at this establishment. A flight was $7.50...if you were in WDM or Waukee, you would probably be looking at double that. They also brew their own beer and cider here; I'm not sure why that's not advertised heavier. Its called the "Gamble Block Brewery". I had Fear the Beard, the Baja Lager, the Maple Pumpkin Ale, and a cinnamon apple cider. The Maple pumpkin ale was delicious--the maple definitely hit on the back end. I was not a fan of the cider--they used a rather tart apple. The Fear the Beard (comparable to Blue Moon) and the Baja lager were OK. For food, I had the chicken tender basket with a 1/2 order of Texas Fries. I actually thought the ranch seasoning detracted from this dish--the queso was quite good and the bacon was plentiful. The downside to getting "sampler" versions of items was none of the accompaniments were included. My friend who got a full order of the Texas Fries was given sour cream with his food--mine did not. Also, on the beer sampler fruit wedges are served with the full size versions but not on the flight. The chicken tenders were very good and had the right breading/chicken ratio. The buffalo sauce packed a punch but was not obnoxiously spicy. The ranch that came with it was very good and was clearly made in-house. More of a 3.5 star review.

If you come to this Mullets location when there are activities at either the Fieldhouse or the diamonds/soccer fields, expect parking to be a nightmare. Norwalk just hasn't made enough parking spots for the complex as a whole and unfortunately, that has to be hard on these businesses. If you cannot find a spot, how are you supposed to come enjoy. When you do find a day that has ample parking, the interior is really spacious and can accommodate many. We've had friendly service with good attention both times I've been. If you are a "fancy" coffee drinker and that's what you're wanting, you won't find it here. They'll serve you a black coffee with some creamer and sugar options. I'm not a lover of their water cups. They are metal and so very cold to handle. They also sweat quickly so are very drippy. My husband loves them. To each their own. The breakfast food has been good both times. I got the Seafood Hash the first time and questioned it having cheese but figured they know what they're doing. It was yummy all together. I couldn't finish it all and it reheated well at home. The second time I had the Cinnamon Roll pancakes meal. Those pancakes were delicious! I took two of them home and they also reheated well. Mullets is a solid addition to Norwalk for breakfast.

It was easy to find right next to the Norwalk Fieldhouse and ball fields. There's a large lot so parking isn't an issue. We arrived at about 430 PM and were greeted right away as we walked in. Party of two. We were shown to a table in the front dining area. Seating is a combination of booths, low top tables and chairs, and a bar area with the standard bar seating we all know and love. The location is a pretty big space divided into basically four areas. A smaller front dining area by the host/hostess station, a larger mid dining area, the rear section is the bar area. The restrooms are in a small hallway to the Left of the bar. There's an arcade at the end of that hallway. Tillman (our server) popped over a minute or so after we were seated. He handed us menus and took our drink orders. We ordered two fountain drinks, a catfish po'boy with cheese curds, and a gringo burger with cheese curds. The sandwiches normally come with fries and there is an upcharge for other side options. The food was ready after a short wait. Tillman kept our drinks full. He pointed us to the arcade so we could go check it out before our food arrived. Everything was hot and fresh off the grill and out of the fryer! Tasted fantastic! The catfish po'boy reminded me a lot of the one I used to get at Wobbly Boots. Next time I'll ask if adding bacon is an option... Lol Tillman checked on us a few times to make sure everything was okay. Everyone we ran across was friendly and at least said hello. One of the managers checked on us about 2/3 of the way through our meal. It's standard table service. Ordering and payment were done through our server at the table. They take cash or cards. Our total came to $39 and change before tip. Being relatively new the place looks clean and while they weren't too busy multiple staff members were wiping down surfaces and preparing for their dinner crowd. A great first experience with Mullet's - Norwalk! And Tillman, from start to finish, was a big part of that...! The smoke on everything was amazing and just the right amount for excellent flavors..the ribs were very meaty. Some places ribs leave you wanting but not at Watcha Smoking!
