This hidden gem is full of Carolina history. The guided tours are both interesting and entertaining. Rarely do museums offer tours with trained interpreters so it was a real treat. Rosedale was a former plantation so the history of enslaved people is very much a part of the story. Included in the house tour was a self-guided tour of the grounds which has beautiful gardens and a recreated blacksmith shop! Well-worth my $15. Plus free parking. Highly recommend! read more

What an experience!! Eric, our tour guide was very knowledgeable about historical events that occurred during the family's history. You could really understand and feel the events that occurred. The home is a beautiful restoration with absolute respect to the past. The blacksmith shop offered actual practices with helpful explanations of process. Well beyond demonstrative, examples of purpose gave life like reasoning to the specific needs and how family members benefited. The grounds speak for the historical efforts to construct their beautiful existence, with unique species of plants. Beautiful trees, 200-300 years old, benefited the live animals with acorns as well. At Rosedale Plantation, there are both a garden tour and a house tour available for purchase. The garden tour was done by someone I wish was my grandpa. He was an older, highly educated Ann Arbor grad with a Ph.D. in botany. My BF and I were the only two on the tour, so we got to ask really interesting questions, and he told us a lot of what was native (or not native) in Chicago! I would highly recommend the garden tour! Tip: Wear bug repellant, because I did get eaten alive by mosquitoes and other bugs :( The house tour was done by a younger man, and there were about 8 of us on the tour. I found some tidbits really interesting, though it left me wanting more. More from the little house? More from the history? More from the tour? I'm not sure... The ones we visited in Charleston were obviously a lot larger and a lot more intriguing. I'm not sure I would recommend the house tour. read more

My wife and I had the luxury of attending an Oyster Roast here one year and had a tremendous time. We took the kiddos and they were able to tour the grounds, see the historic house and see an actual metal-smith in the metal shop out back. I cannot thank those who not only preserve such historic locations but also the volunteers that usually are the face and personalities of such locations. The kids had such a blast running around the grounds and "exploring" the house. Given that the tour is self guided, the kids had the illusion they were exploring uncharted areas and making new discoveries. read more

Probably one of my favorite tours yet. Ample parking spaces, restrooms on premises (use before entering house as no restrooms inside House), Tour was separated into 2 groups so was not over crowded. We began our tour with a short video and a quick history lesson from our tour guide . We were able to view all areas of the home to include basement and attic. Our tour guide was very knowledgeable and learned quite a bit about the house, owners, and history of; as a bonus she gave extra facts of the local areas. The only bummer of the tour is no indoor photos (understandable for safety reasons). Great way to spend a few hours! My children (14 & 19) are always amazed at how different times are and what was considered necessities in the 1800's vs. Now after walking the tours. Great lessons for older kids; maybe make them appreciate what they have a little more (not sure I would bring toddlers or younger children as they may get bored easily). Love!! It's hard to believe this wonderful home is one of the last Antebellum homes in the Charlotte area given the age of the Queen City. This treasure from 1815 is beautifully restored and maintained in period glory. Lived in by the same family for its last century as a private home, it's decorated with antique furniture and adorned with charm and artifacts from the families that called Rosedale home. Once on over 900 acres, it rests on 8 1/2 acres just three miles from the Uptown section of Charlotte. The grounds have archaeological features including the foundation of the original barn and several heritage trees provide shade in the summer and brilliant colors in the fall. My favorite place to view the home is the bench at the pavilion in the flower garden. The historic home peaks through the flowers and foliage and takes you back. A sustenance farm in its days as an active plantation, the house lacks some of the grandeur of homes built in the years just prior to the Civil War, but was considered opulent for its time and location and has a beauty unparalleled by any modern mansion. Allison provided me a tour, which I was fortunate to have to myself, and her expertise on the home and the time period provided wonderful context to the home's history. Was visiting Charlotte on a road trip and decided to take a guided tour of the house here. We were one of the largest groups they have had since COVID so it was nice to be a part of helping the place get back on its feet. We arrived about an hour beforehand and enjoyed the gardens and watched the blacksmith work. I had never seen a blacksmith before so that was especially interesting. If you can, make sure you stop by and watch. Laura led our tour, and was extremely knowledgeable about the property and could answer almost any question that guests had. Cher was also very welcoming and helped us get checked in upon our arrival. They could not have made this an easier or more pleasurable experience. I definitely recommend visiting historic rosedale if you are in the area, it's a great way to spend an afternoon! read more

Great Tour of an Interesting House Enjoyed an (almost private) tour of this restored 1815 Federalist home that was in the same family until the 1990s when it was turned over to the preservers. This is a really lovely house with beautiful grounds. It isn't Monticello or Ashlawn-Highland because it only left the family's hands 30 years ago. They are still working on excavating parts of it and learning about the history. The furniture is mostly "period pieces," (not original property of the owners) and that is fine. The staff's knowlege and enthusiasm make this little gem well worth a visit. I was very impressed! Highly recommend. read more

It's a place you do not even realize is there ! Off of the busy street of North Tryon not far from NODA you would never expect this 200 year old plantation to be there. I recommend going in the spring or summer when the flowers are bloomed in the garden and around the house. It is a nice place to visit to so something different in a city that you did not know was there. The staff is friendly. You can also have weddings and even use the basement of the house as location for a shower or another small event. Check it out ! read more

The tour focuses on the architecture and period piece details and furnishings. Which is nice if you're into that. However, it also paints a revisionist history through references to "members of the enslaved community", "cooks", and "nannies" rather than slaves. The tour also insists they were "treated rather nicely" without any basis other than hearsay from a point of view that benefits from masking the realities of slavery. If society is to learn from the mistakes of the past, such rosey colored language does more harm than good to visitors. read more

I can not believe how many times I've driven by this place and never thought to even see what it was about. Thankfully I have a girlfriend that is good at planning things to do and this was on our list last weekend. Charlotte native or not you should come see this house. They provide an hour long tour for $10 and I'd bet to say that it will be a very small group each time. While we were there it was literally me, my girlfriend and the tour guide. Architecture buffs will love it too. There is so many stories to learn about here you'll be amazed. This house dates back to 1819 when the population of Mecklenburg County was 400......400! read more

I loved the architecture and the surrounding gardens are pleasant to walk through even in the insane heat and humidity. I appreciated the tourguide's pointing out the ways in which the women and girls of the house were often left out of the narrative... BUT slavery was hardly mentioned at all! There were 20-30 slaves who lived, worked, sweated, and died on that plantation at any given time and only one, a particularly talented blacksmith, was mentioned. read more

We landed late and rented a car for a quick weekend football game in Davidson. Always wanting to see and learn about local history, we thought this was close enough and interesting. Unfortunately we got there after closing at 4:30pm, but the gates were open so we went in and did a self guided tour. I Googled the site and we read up on it's history as we walked the grounds. Did not get to see inside the house but I can only imagine what it looked like. It was an interesting story, I'm sure the guided tour would have been more informative, as others posted great reviews about it, but may have been a bit long for our whirlwind tour time. It's a great drive by educational experience for those of us who didn't pay too much attention in HS American history class. It's nestled in a bustling part of town surrounded by warehouses and car repair shops. Worth the stop and I'm glad we did even if it was closed Also discovered a cool tap room down the street, so that was a plus. read more

Great place to visit while you're in Charlotte. It's not every day you get to see a home that's over 200 years old that's in this good of condition from cellar to attic. The tour through the home lasted for over two hours, which is more than is designated for other homes of this size that I've toured. Spent a lovely afternoon at 1815 plantation home, black smith workshop and gardens. This is the second oldest home in Charlotte with 200 year old trees. The staff is so passionate about the home and gardens. Paul was very knowledgeable and a delight on tour. Allow about 1 hour and 15 minutes and good thing to know is the home has A/C. Very cool place to visit. Also happens to be very haunted. If your lucky you might just have a cool paranormal experience. I did not, but two of my friends with me did. We also got to listen to some stories and legends from the director. I would come back again. The organization is nonprofit and runs strictly on money made from tours $10, or event rentals. So as a native Charlottean I'd never actually come here. When you think historic Plantation you don't think N. Tryon near Uptown haha. However I knew it was there and had driven by numerous times. One day on FB this event pops up. Paranormal Ghost tour... my bff is completely into that kind of thing so I suggested we check it out. The tour itself was okay but had way too many people. The Plantation, although small, was beautiful. We got a few background stories about the Dr. who owned the property and we got free reign to tour the grounds. The garden was really nice and there's this grove of trees that if you walk through smells like cinnamon. I don't know what plant is over there that smells that way but I need it for my house!! All in all we decided we need to come back and tour the house during the day! Also would make a great spot for a picnic, or even a wedding for someone who likes that kind of location for a wedding! read more

This is a quiet gem that needs lots of promotion. Smell the 200 year old wood inside and the boxwoods outside. For history buffs, this is a must see in Charlotte, The gardens are well worth a stroll.
