It's been awhile since I saw this masterpiece by Cerny a few years ago, and I found the perfect opportunity to go see it again... We went with some friends to check out this event, Metalmorphosis @ Whitehall with CSO Roadshow (and food trucks). What a fun idea! Surprisingly, it wasn't packed when we first got there, but gradually all the seats filled up. First of all, the Metal head was working (which is dicey!)...Thank God! I did wonder why it couldn't spew water from its mouth. THAT would be so spectacular! Still, the head did spin around, and segment into different pieces too. So amazing! It made a great backdrop for the CSO roadshow, which featured many pop songs over the decade. Surprisingly good...even for cheesy numbers like "Living La Loca" and "YMCA"!! The funny thing is...this corporate park is located near the airport, so there were many, many planes that flew over during the concert. Luckily, we were still able to hear the orchestra pretty good. The food truck was a bit disappointing though. Only 3 vendors...and the vendor we chose (King of Fire) was so slow, I almost gave up! More on that on another review. The sculpture looked so out of place...too majestic for such a common corporate park. In any case, I took several pictures of the sculpture this time. Last time we were out here visiting looked up some art to see. Came across the Metalmorphosis Giant Head sculpture and thought that would be cool to take my grandkids out to see. It was a bit of a drive to get here and the sculpture is located tucked away around some office buildings. The day we came it was empty and we had the whole grounds to ourselves except for security, lol. This sculpture is really cool and I liked how it rotated around. It was really awesome to see how someone's vision can come to life with determination. read more

I discovered Metamorphosis over 5yrs ago when my Dad first moved to Charlotte. It was still being built and it had slowly, but surely gotten into its full splendor. There were mechanical issues & then some reno work done, but they have a live video feed of it and when I saw it was finally in its full functioning glory, I had to go see it for myself! It was as awe-inspiring, magnificent, and impressive as I imagined it would be! To think it is hidden away in some random office park is just incredible! I literally could have spent the afternoon w/a picnic there watching it! The Queen City still has surprises up her sleeve...incredible how this city has these little hidden treasures that would make u think from a picture it was in some big US city or international one. Keeping it classy & unpredictable, CrownTown...and I'm so here for it! read more

I was in the Charlotte area over the weekend and wanted to stop by Metalmorphosis, but it was definitely a surprise. The Gaint head is located in front of a large business building. Metamorphosis is totally free and their is a ton of parking, wich is free as well as a ton of walking space. The gaint head sits on a huge reflect pool which looks really cool. When I went the head was straight, but it does move in different directions (hints the metamorphis part). I would definitely recommend taking photos, because you are not going g to be able to see this anywhere else. I recommend that you should see the gaint head, because it is a show stopper. If I am in the area again, I will be coming back. read more

This has to be one of the coolest art exhibits around! Located in the middle of an office park, unless someone told you about it, you would never even know about it. Safe to say, this is a hidden gem. A giant human head made to realistic proportions, completely out of metal, and slowly rotating 365 degrees in the middle of a fountain. It really is a sight to see. This would fit anywhere in a modern art gallery. To see it in an office park is unusual but also really unique. Be sure to drop by and take a picture if you get a chance and are in the area! :) read more

I took a redeye flight from Las Vegas and landed in Charlotte, North Carolina at 7:30am. I picked up my rent a car and headed to check out this cool artwork sculpture. It was about a 10min drive from the airport. When I got there on a Saturday morning, there wasn't anyone around. I was able to take some cool photos (posted on yelp) and videos of the Metalmorphosis. It was located in a peaceful area behind a big building if your driving towards it. There was a ton of FREE parking so I was able to get down, spend some time to appreciate this amazing artwork and then took off. If your looking to kill time or want to check out something pretty cool and interesting, then I recommend the Metalmorphosis. Great place to sit and relax. read more

This is the best outdoor art in Charlotte! This huge moving metal head sitting on serene slowly moving water moves constantly forming into a head and then deforming, like a rubix, cube into pieces and then reforming as a head in another direction. Peaceful and interesting I love to sit and enjoy this fountain during a walk or during lunch. Tip, sometimes the food trucks come on Wednesday at lunch , but with Covid this has been spotty. Take a look, you will like it! While in the area, you can also see a quality piece of art next door at The Grace Communion International office at 3120 Whitehall Park Drive. Just go for the Head! (Smiles). it's very interesting -_- David Cerny's wonderful creativity and imagination definitely had me like "Ahh". For many Charlotte residents, this is just a "normal" sculpture that business professionals pass by on their way to their tranquil office. But for tourist like myself, this is one of the BEST unique stainless steel sculptures I have seen in my years of living! Metamorphosis is a stainless steel giant head sculpture that sits in a fountain which is surrounded by a beautiful plaza and is a very peaceful spot. It's easy to find and there's tons of parking. The business park is near the airport and you can nicely see the planes cascading in the clouds every 5-10 minutes. This spot definitely makes a great photo opportunity. Ahh, the giant face moves from left to right in bits and pieces and regains its original shape after a regular time interval; the movement is controlled by computerized programming. The pictures online do it no justice. You have to come and check it out for yourself. Other than the "head" there is nothing else to do here. Take pictures and leave, just like that. I'm happy I was able to check this landmark out during my recent road trip. It's a quick nip off the 485 highway; if you're feeling up for it, you can check this place out on your way to Charlotte Premium Outlets just one exit away from this location. For photography fanatics like myself, this is an awesome location! Out in the open, so you can access the site day and night, FREE site, and tons of parking available. Metamorphosis is a definite GO! Honestly, I took tons of pictures that I didn't really need to take but I thoroughly enjoyed myself. read more

What can you say about a 14 ton rotating head in the middle of a fountain that acts as the "welcoming committee" to an office building in a commercial office park in Southwest Charlotte? I can say that in all my travels, I've never seen anything like this. Not just the gigantic head. But a ROTATING gigantic head. David Černý, the Czech sculptor of this interesting piece. It's not political. It really doesn't make a statement other than "Wow, this is unique." Forty steel pieces that rotate 360 degrees. I found out later that it's supposed to "spit" water into the fountain, but that feature wasn't operating today. It is interesting, that's for darned sure. If you're driving 485 near the outlet mall, it's not much out of your way to stop by and check out. Cue Austin Powers. "He'll never be the head of a major corporation." read more

I might be cheating by including this review. It's a stand-alone piece of art that a friend introduced me to last week, and I had never seen or heard of it. I was sad I'd never heard of it, as it's this big, beautiful masterwork right here in Charlotte. So basically, it's a giant head. It spins kind of randomly, wildly. It's made of stainless steel, and it's beautiful. The giant head is also a fountain, but like a silky, smooth kind of fountain. It made me want to fall down on the ground and go to sleep, listening to the water, watching the freaky head spinning on its axis. I have no idea who made it or why it's standing in a corporate office complex. There's a decent Thai restaurant nearby, too, that I'll review another time. I think the Giant Head would be a great location for a picnic or outdoor date or afternoon nap, or whatever you want. read more

One day, you're driving along Arrowood and then you spot, out of the corner of your eye, a glint...nay, a sparkle of gloriously metallic art. Standing proudly between office buildings in an innocuous office park. Holding ground firmly. A spectacle to be seen. Then....you drive closer. Drawn in by it's sheer oddity. BAM. It's a GIANT FREAKING HEAD. Now, for those of you with a running imagination, I say let it run. This thing is wonderful. Massive in scale. Easily 15 ft tall, reflecting all sources of light, resting atop a beautiful, flat fountain....and...it spins. It spins in different directions, in pieces, and somewhat at random. I'm not sure whether you call this art or a monument. Visit during the night hours to see it stoically standing guard before the Paychex building. The calm water of the fountain dribbles over the edge and makes a calming sound as the giant eyes stare off into the night sky. If you've ever seen large statues, seen movies like Prometheus or Lord of the Rings, or just have a wandering imagination, like me, you'll find this little dose of local flavor worth the drive. This has been one of my things-to-see since I heard about it from family and friends. It's located in a business park but the setting is very nice. I was here on a quiet weekend when there weren't very many people around. Beautiful fountain and of course the shinning, revolving head. Nice place to take pictures with all the flowers blooming. I moved to Charlotte last year, and this has been one of the silliest most random things that I love about Charlotte. Yes, it sits in the middle of a business park. Yes, it's ridiculously large (there's another one, go ahead...). Is it worth the 5 min detour off of 485? Absolutely. When I moved last April, I heard that it was broken. It didn't spin, it didn't spit, it just sat there. Still interesting all the same. But I went in July 2013 with a friend of mine, and Metalmorphosis learned how to spit! It's in a corporate park but it's awesome. Easy to photograph, at least on a weekday, because it's not in a touristy area. If there is enough wind, the spinning makes the sculpture quite beautiful. I would not recommend visiting if you are not already nearby. read more

This piece of artwork is absolutely beautiful!! And hidden! It's located in a business park in Southwest Charlotte and has been here for 10 years! It stands 25 feet tall and it rotates and reconfigures itself. It's impressive to say the least. It's worth a quick visit to see it in "action". My darling and random husband told me one night at 10pm, "Honey, go put your shoes on. We're going to have an adventure." I was clueless about where we might be going, and all the better. I should preface this review by mentioning that I have an unhealthy obsession for obscenely large items (cue laughter and ridicule). I stalk websites about the Ryugyong Hotel, spend unholy amounts of time contemplating the possibilities of tsunamis sweeping me from my apartment to my doom...in Charlotte, and frequently gasp when I see empty swimming pools, coliseums or stadiums. I'm a strange one. So anyway, Ben drove us out to an office park, and my hopes of adventure were waning. Seriously, who has adventures in office parks? But then he turned into a parking lot and LO AND BEHOLD THERE WAS A GIANT METAL HEAD! I was deliriously excited! So happy! (Also a little freaked out, heart palpitations, and instant imaginations of a giant metal body resting beneath the earth...) Simultaneously whimsy-inducing and terrifying, we walked up to the glistening, enormous work of art and marveled at its construction, location and....just wondered why it was there. As Westley would say, "I've never seen its equal." And really, I haven't. I'm itching to get back there and feed my hunger for the oversized and just plain weird. read more

There currently is no Big Giant Head to behold. They have taken it down. The live feed camera monitoring was disabled some time ago and now there is nothing there except the base. I adore this art piece and hope it will eventually return. According to Donna Ashcraft-Pressley, Marketing Director for AAC, the giant kinetic sculpture had "some issues that need to be repaired by the artist, David Černý, who lives in Prague." She goes on to explain that "it is a very complicated mechanism and the artist is working hard on solving the problem." UPDATE: Repairs have been made and Metalmorphosis has returned! read more

A shiny giant rotating metal head, what's there not to like? It's absolutely beautiful on days with blue skies and fluffy white clouds. I've never seen anything like it. Very unique. It's just as reflective as the "bean" in Chicago, but much cooler because it actually moves around! It's too bad that it's not in uptown Charlotte, for more people to see and appreciate it...but I didn't mind having the whole head to myself when I stopped by :) read more

I will echo the comments of everyone else. This was a pretty cool statue in the middle of an industrial park, although it technically is a fountain. I wouldn't go out of my way to see it but if you are in the area it's worth the stop. read more
