Yelp, I'd love to see a special category for reviews like this. I would never use this particular business. Others might, though. The person who recommended this business said there's one person with this business and that's it. That's fine and typical.
We needed a person to replace an attic fan. I don't know if it's the fan that's a problem, the thermostat, an electrical short, bracket issues, or the size or cost of a replacement fan if that's what's needed. I emailed the company.
The company didn't come here to see what was needed and what I got back was an estimate. There were two figures - one for the cost of a replacement fan (size and everything else is unknown). How does he know what the fan will cost? If it's a range, are we getting the high, middle, or low range for the cost of it?
- one for ... well, I'm not sure what, but he'd come here, charge us between $125ish - ? (I don't remember and I don't have the email) without even seeing the work.
My response was it's ludicrous to give an estimate without knowing what the work is. He disagreed. You can't give realistic estimates without seeing what's required. Someone's going to lose out - the company/handyman or you. I also don't care others are doing the same thing. I won't use them either and haven't.
We've been through about three handymen here. One's work (he moved) was slipshod and we had to have his work rechecked and
redone (so paid to have it redone). We finally found a wonderful person whose work and ideas we trust. He came, got a list, told us approximately what the initial cost would be and we're keeping him.
I don't trust companies that don't do estimates for "larger" jobs. It's like going online and getting a moving estimate without someone coming over and doing an inventory first. I've seen too many reviews warning consumers not to hire a company that won't send someone out first. This business may be fine for other work and he was recommended by someone in my area.
