When my sister was taken into the psychiatric hospital, my father and I were asked by her if we could help her clean her place or help find someone to clean it.
There were lots of trash bags not taken out and food and packaging left out. However she also had several things of monetary and sentimental value that she didn't want messed with, as well as practical things like her clothes and shoes.
We made a list with her of things she didn't want touched. A television, a Switch with two games, her clothes and shoes, her artwork. She did not want her drawers or closets gone through, or things like the cards on the wall taken down or the magnets on the fridge from a previous vacation.
Simple stuff.
My father contacted Hippo Hauling as they had good reviews as far as he could tell. He spoke with the owner, negotiated a price, and made it very clear the stuff my sister did not want to be thrown out. Owner confirmed that would be fine, and that we would pay 200 dollars to have just the trash thrown out.
My father met the two men that were sent to clean her apartment. He greeted them and showed them the list of things my sister wanted left alone and went through it with them. He made it very explicit that it was important that the things on the list be left alone, and left them a copy. He said they agreed.
So here's what they did instead. They threw every single thing away in her apartment. The large tv, her Switch that was laying out, they went through her drawers and threw away every single piece of clothing she had, they threw out all of her shoes that were by the door, tore her cards off the wall, took her magnets off the fridge, went through her closet that exclusively held her artwork she made from high school to college and threw away every single piece she'd made.
And worst of all they when they went emptied one of those drawers they threw away a folder containing her birth mother's only letter to her, the only photo she had of her mother, and all the cards her mother had left her as well as her mothers family and medical records. Those. Were. IRREPLACEABLE.
I'm so glad my sister was in a stronger place mentally when she came back to that, otherwise I have no idea what would have happened.
Obviously my father demanded a refund, that he wanted money to replace her clothes and electronics that they dumped.
They are giving us 100 dollars back.
They came into my sister's house at a time when she was asking for help at her most vulnerable point, agreed falsely to not throw out what she didn't want them to, blatantly ignored everything they were told, and took everything my sister had.
Maybe Hippo Hauling is a good place to turn to if you have a warehouse needs cleaning out, or a backyard that has junk in it.
But please, PLEASE people. If you have a family member going through a tough time who needs help getting their house clean to help them get their life back on track, DO NOT call on these people.
If you have a loved one that needs a caring, compassionate bunch of people to help them, Hippo Hauling does not have what you are looking for.
I am absolutely disgusted with the lack of care with which they treated my sister's situation. We weren't expecting perfection, hell we all were expecting a few things to get lost honestly. But this? We couldn't have expected this.
