The oldest of…read morethe old King Philip's War was a nasty affair with atrocities and lots of horrible things occurring on both the Native American and English sides. Towns were burned and people murdered. No quarter was asked and none was given. One particularly brutal incident was called Nine Men's Misery. It started on March 20, 1676, when Capt Piece of the colonists let a group of troops after what was left of the Narragansett Tribe. The troops got a bit too over confident and walked right into an ambush and were slaughtered by the Narragansetts. Virtually all of the troops were killed but nine managed to survive the battle and were captured, tortured and then killed. Not exactly unexpected considering what the English were doing to the Narragansetts. Most of their villages were burned and the women and children executed . When other English troops found the bodies of the dead captives. they immediately buried the bodies and put up a monument site of rocks over the graves so the memory of the incident would never be forgotten. The pile of rocks have been tended to ever since and is now considered the oldest veterans memorial in the country. It's not exactly an exciting or aesthetically stunning memorial but it an extremely spooky and fascinating place to hike out and actually find. The area has lots of cool hiking trails besides the one leading to the memorial but the bugs are incredibly bad in these woods. Lovely stone walls and beautiful trees, this would probably be a great place for a winter or fall hike. A thoughtful place to reflect and remember what it was like back then during these horrible wars. Right and wrong, good and evil are just words. Pain, death and suffering was the reality.

In addition to using recycled steel from the shipping containers, the design incorporates energy recovery ventilation, storm runoff reduction, and light fixtures sensing daylight - encouraging 25% less energy than most office buildings. Current tenants include social enterprises like Maternova, nonprofits like Social Venture Partners RI and the Green and Healthy Homes Initiative, design firms like Morris Beach Design and Kelly Taylor Interior Design, and a handful of other local businesses, including the 3 collaborators who made this architectural experiment possible: distill studio, Stack Design Build, and truth box inc. We were exploring the area and happened onto the park and decided to stop and walk around. This brought us upon Crocker Park, and the views were phenomenal! Seeing all of the boats and harbors was breathtaking. We sat on a bench for a while and just took in the sites. The park has plenty of walking paths, and benches and rocks to sit on. It would make a great spot for a picnic. If you find yourself in this area I highly recommend checking out Crocker Park! The views alone are worth the trip.

Pines stones but no…read moreghosts The Old Burial Ground is a very old graveyard indeed. The sign in front says 1661 and it is the oldest graveyard in the town of Manchester By-the-Sea. There are records of an older one but it is long forgotten and no longer exists. This ancient graveyard does look old, very old. Many of the gravestones are worn away and the oldest ones I could read were from the early 1700's. It's obvious that the broken and impossible to read stones are much older. The cemetery is a lovely place, lots of tall pine trees grow around, beside and even up through some of the ancient stones. It actually smells great, with the scent of pine permeating the air. One surprising fact about this ancient place is that there are no legends of ghosts or hauntings. Quite surprising since virtually all old and spooky graveyards have a least a few resident mischievous spirits hanging around. Perhaps it is just so old that even the ghosts got tired and just want to rest.

There's horses old and new, all perfectly aligned in two circles. Clearly this has to be kept by someone because they're all perfectly arranged, and I'm thinking about how easily wind,rain, and other weather conditions could effect them, meanwhile they're all in fantastic condition.

So many rocking horses. Big. Small. Wood. Plastic. Pink. Brown. I shared photos with family and one of them said it was 'creepy'. Ha! A bunch of children's rocking horses, in a random rural field, arranged in a circle? Sure, I can see how you might see that as creepy! Hahaha. I found it a delightful bit of whimsy and am SO happy to share in the fun. The site is maintained by whomever is our host. The circle was mowed making it easy to walk around and enjoy. The pathways to the site, which is very close to the street, are also kept clear. It's definitely off the beaten path and worth the extra time because the drive in is on lovely, windy, tree lined, back roads. A nice break from highway driving. Parking is roadside. Please do not park in the driveway next to the henge as that is someone's driveway. Go have some fun. Or go creep yourself out. Which ever way you see it, it's totally worth a stop!

And the fish are of varying sizes in the different tanks. The tanks closest to the visitor parking lot hold the largest fish - saw lots of 18"+ fish (those are the big rainbow trout in my video). You can buy a handful of fish food for 25 cents. The dispenser is like an old fashioned bubble gum machine. Bring quarters and bring a cup or napkin to dispense the food into - a quarters worth barely fits in my hand. I'm immature , so I easily go through $1 worth of food. Inevitably there is a family there who doesn't have quarters (no change maker on site), so I usually end up buying food for some kids as well. Still, under $2 for an hour of pure excitement. The best is when you actually feed the fish - it's a total feeding frenzy with fish jumping out of the water. It's really cool.

Board of Health Failure - Chipotle in Derby…read more This entire restaurant is a Salmonella outbreak waiting to happen. In fact, my daughter threw up after eating here. I'm just now making that connection. Every surface was a complete mess. Every table in the dining room looked to have been neglected for hours. The floors were a mess. The soda station nozzles did not appear to have been cleaned. The cutlery station was a mess with food everywhere. Even if the customers are this messy, someone needs to clean and sanitize frequently. The prep area was a mess. It needed to be broken and thoroughly cleaned, particularly between the sneeze guard and the rest of the station. How do they not have mice with food stuck in all those places? The service bar was a nightmare with food all over the stations and new orders being dragged though it. It appeared that the goal was to see how a big of mess they could make. One employee over filled three taco with rice. Another scooped out the excess by hand and threw it back in to rice bin to be served again. That should have been put in the trash. To be fair, one employee was checking on holding temperatures, but given that she used the probe several times in the same container it is likely that she was untrained in its use or was hoping for a suitable result to record. I shudder to think what the walk in might look like. If this location continues to be allowed to operate like this, I have serious concerns about eating anywhere that is controlled by the Board of Heath in Hingham.

The day I went, it was a little overcast, so seeing beyond the lake was a little harder but I got to see the bay. We stopped by at Yarmouth first to take in the beauty of a 120 year old English weeping birch tree and hard time locating it because it's not on yelp! we heard about it from locals! So check that out too! It's located at the backyard of captain Bangs Hallet's house which has a metal statue of a sailboat in the front in Yarmouth! Love our road trips.
