Went to dinner last night and I do not eat meat but I do eat seafood. I ordered the vegetable dumpling soup and asked specifically if it was only vegetables and I was assured by the waitress that there was no meat, the soup came out and I bit into a dumpling that was pork I showed her she tried telling me it wasn't pork. I argued that it was and finally she went to ask the chef and he said yes the vegetable dumplings have pork. Then I ordered the FJ roll which does not have avocado in the description on the menu, I specifically ordered this because of the no avocado as I am allergic to avocado the roll came out with crab meat covering the entire top of the roll I grabbed my first piece and ate it then realized that under the crab salad was avocado! I brought it to the waitresses attention and she argued that it says it in the menu I told her it does not then I felt crazy and said okay maybe it does she wouldn't bring a menu back my boyfriend went up to look at the menu to check if it mentions avocado and it did not! Then the owner, jimmy, came over and argued with me since I'm new here I don't know the rolls, mind you every roll that comes with avocado said avocado on the menu! This roll specifically did not say and after we ordered my boyfriend asked me if there was anything in the rolls that I couldn't eat I said (in front of the waitress) no it's fine there's no avocado! The owner argued with me that I was wrong and that this is how it goes here and that I did not know because I WAS NEW! Therefore, if you are trying to spread the business of this place I would recommend not to considering new comers don't know that food is not supposed to come out as described in the description. read more

After eating across the street at Nagahama for years, I finally tried Himawari. I've been kicking myself for not going there sooner. The sushi is fresh and prepared with creativity. They offer live scallop regularly as well as many of the dishes made famous at NOBU. The edamame is brought out at the start and is on the house. They often buy you a bottle of sake after you have already ordered a few. That NEVER happens across the street. The staff is polite and the owner goes out of his way to make you feel welcome. Its truly a gem that you really don't want to get too popular because it won't be long for the lines to start forming. Keep the sushi coming guys! read more

We've been long time customers at this nice, little sushi restaurant for years. We've known Jimmy (and previous owners) and hate to write this poor review. Wow, 'when the cats away the mice will play'. Jimmy (owner/manager) was no where to be found on Sunday, 4/3/2016. Probably tending to his other local restaurant, Seasons. Today we received the WORST service ever!! We were all but ignored. No hand towels, no edamame! No excuses. Our tempura appetizer took 45 minutes. We watched in frustration a parade of outgoing orders as we waited and waited for our order to arrive. (Apparently seated customers take 2nd priority to call in orders.) After 1 hour we finally received our Beef Nagamaki and sushi combo mix. We seethed as we watched other patrons, who arrived after us, receive their appetizers and entrees quickly before us. The food was very good, but lousy service left a bad taste in our mouths. It will be a long time for us to return.....maybe. I'm sorry, there is no excuse for terrible service with lots of competition having many fine restaurants in Long Beach. read more

himawari is bar none the best sushi restaurant on long island. Much better than any of its competitors in town. The owner jimmy makes the experience even better. He talks to everyone there and makes everyone feel at home. They have great appetizers like tuna pizza and their special rolls are the best. It was okay. I was hungry after sun bathing all morning and it satisfied my hunger. I thought it was a pretty good deal for their lunch special. I ordered the salmon teriyaki, came with sushi and 2 shu mai as well as rice. It was only 10 bucks for all of that. Their christmas tree roll wasn't too bad either. But I don't think there was anything special about this place that I would need to go back to try. read more

I've been here 3 times now and usually will wait that long to write a critical review. Despite all of the positive words on Yelp about this place, I am pretty disappointed. I am a sashimi person as opposed to sushi and found the quality of the fish to be poor to average. The tuna has been excessively vein-y every time, and doesn't really strike me a fresh. The fatty tuna, usually my favorite when getting sashimi, was rubbery and borderline inedible. Miso and Clear Soups have a weird flavor to them and the green tea is bland. The tuna avocado salad was among the better things I've had, but I also found the ginger dressing to be a little bland and watery. As a plus, the staff is wonderfully pleasant and attentive. The service was lightning quick and they were able to make accomodations no problem. Despite this and with numerous options in the area, I'd be inclined to venue elsewhere. read more

Great sushi great service, they always come up with great creative rolls and sashimi. The freshness is incredible always and reccomendations are always right on the money. Its a small laid back place with very fair prices and over the top great sushi. if you havent tried it you should. Great sushi, and they have a menu full of great variety, there are a great deal of house rolls to choose from, and their specialty rolls are delish. They also have a great veggie roll they make for my husband , with gobo cucumber and avocado. Therefore , this is a great place, and the customer service is very good as well. Yum. That sums it up. I love sushi and have been to many rest even nobu. The sushi here is fresh. They offer many unique items. We had the sushi sandwich roll and it was very good. Also ordered rolls and the hawian salad. All were delicious. Nice restaurant. We sat upstairs which was nice and comfortable. Ac was set at the perfect temperature . It has a separate controller so you can tell the hostess to turn it down if its to cold. Very accomaditing. Give it a try. Very crowded Sat evening but no wait sat quickly. read more

I've traveled this country far and wide and consider myself a sushi guru of sorts and without question, Himwari is some of the freshest sushi I've ever had and by far, the best sushi on Long Beach. If you know anything about eating sushi, you always sit at the sushi bar, make friends with the chef's and ask what's fresh. Jimmy and his Himwari staff rock and are more then happy to answer any questions you may have and often offer a free app when sitting down at the bar. Freshness, presentation and service are superb and I get constant refills of my green tea without even asking. Scallops, Ikura, Masago, Uni, Tako, Yellowtail, Saba various types of Sake-Salmon, Toro-tuna, Eel-Unari are as fresh can be and flown in from Japan and Europe several times a week. I'm always greeted with hello's and smiles when I walk in and it's a pleasure to dine here. The $1 sushi at lunch is the real deal, no gimmicks and the best way to find out just how excellent this place is without even coming close to breaking the bank. I recently moved to Long Beach and was in search of a go to sushi restaurant and without question this is it. I will also say, that the spicy mayo is the absolute best I've ever had. read more
