Meanwhile, I had to request vinegar and hot sauce three separate times, and she still never brought them to me during the entire 2.5 hours we were there for the buffet. What she did ask for repeatedly was my drink menu, even though I like to enjoy a drink after my meal. I couldn't understand the difference in treatment at first, but then I realized we were the only women of color in the restaurant that night. After an otherwise great meal, it became clear to me that Joanna seemed uncomfortable serving Black women. I have never felt so singled out or overlooked in this establishment. Despite the poor service, we all left a good tip--not because it was earned, but because we refused to be placed into the stereotype that people of color don't tip. But truly, the service did not merit the 18% we each left. I've always brought my family here over the years, even for holiday meals, and I've never had an experience like this. It is sad to be reminded that we are still not always received the same as others, even when we're paying the same money and showing the same respect.
