Too Much Clothing - Yet I Had Nothing to Wear: How I learned that less is more.
The number one problem most people have when it comes to clothing is they have too much. Having suffered from this dilemma for years I was one of those that would stand in front of a closet full of clothing and complain that I had nothing to wear.
It was November 2011, I had a business speech that I was delivering to 18 global senior executives and I had a closet full of clothing, yet, nothing to wear. So, like I always would do whenever I had a big event and could not find something to wear, I went shopping. This time, however, I did not go to the shops I normally frequented; instead, I walked into Nick Hilton's store in downtown Princeton.
Immediately I was warmly greeted by Jennifer. Jennifer worked with me one-on-one. If the hem was too long, the jacket too loose, or the sleeves too long, or short, alterations got done. The item I purchased was fitted to my body with perfection. No more tugging or pulling on my clothing, what I purchased fit me perfectly. This enabled me to go about my work and not think about my clothing.
Shopping at Nick Hilton is an event and a process: top quality clothing that is timeless made of high quality fabrics from reputable manufacturers, one-of-a-kind Nick Hilton brand and attention from professionals in the clothing industry who have a lifetime of experience. These are people who were born to be in the business, not a sales person working for a few months in a shop to earn a little extra cash.
At Nick Hilton, you will be asked about your personal style, your habits, what you like and dislike when it comes to your wardrobe. Together, you will build a relationship that is based on understanding you and your wardrobe needs.
Jennifer runs the women's department. She is more than a personal shopper; she is a professional wardrobe stylist, an expert on fabrics with a keen eye for fit, for style, and for the mood an outfit needs to create to give you the impact you deserve.
For a small shop, Nick Hilton packs power in every piece of clothing they sell. Each item is carefully selected, and let me tell you, when it comes to clothing we all need to rely on the "eye of the buyer," and I mean the shop buyer, not "you" the buyer.
Today's mass-marketing, fit the masses mentality is all over the place. 99% of people selling you clothing know nothing about what they are selling, they can't combine pieces, they do not know the names of the fabrics, they do not understand drape. These are only a few of the things a buyer must know in order to dress a client.
Instead, you find shops like my closet used to be, full of everything, yet nothing useful. At Nick Hilton, you participate in the buying process and everything you buy is carefully selected with "you," the client, in mind.
What I learned? I learned that 90% of the clothing in my closet was cheaply made, did not withstand cleaning, lacked staying power and did not even fit me properly.
I now have a polished closet with carefully selected pieces of clothing that fit me perfectly and function effectively for all the happenings in my life. I no longer worry about what I am going to wear. As a matter of fact, for three years I have not heard myself say, "What shall I wear." I know what to wear and can say, "I truly enjoy my clothing."
I am able to move from casual dress, to a business professional power look, to a global presence smoothly and confidently. And by the way, the first outfit I purchased three years ago is still a staple in my wardrobe. It has stood the test of time, not only in styling, but in quality.
I am a client, not a customer. The attention I receive at Nick Hilton is a partnership, not a sales pitch. I learned that less is more... I have a carefully selected wardrobe with pieces that each year I can spruce up with a new item that will allow me to be updated, look polished, feel confident, and most importantly, fits my lifestyle.
