We were in town and someone suggested going here, so we headed over for Saturday dinner. Unfortunately, if I'm being completely honest, it was just not great. When you consider the food prices, the credit card fee, and the taste of the food itself, it's hard to even give this place 3 out of 5 stars and call it "average." I hate giving lower reviews, especially to smaller businesses, but this place needs some work. I'm going to write the kind of honest review I wish I would have seen before going here. To start, the prices are quite high. For what they're charging, I expected much better food. On top of that, they also charge a credit card fee, which means they are passing that cost onto the customer in addition to the high menu prices. That alone is an immediate negative for me. The ambience of the place itself isn't bad. It's a larger restaurant, and the curved door and circular shape are actually kind of cool. It's also cool having TVs all around. We were there on a Saturday night, and it was pretty slow. That said, if the locals have been here before, I can understand why it was slow, given the food quality and prices. I got the 1/2 Tequila BBQ Burger, and it was pretty boring. I can make much better burgers at home. It needed better seasoning, or really just any seasoning at all. The tequila bbq sauce was fine, but it mostly tasted like very sweet barbecue sauce. I got waffle fries with my order, and they were also just fine. Someone else at our table got the beer-battered fries, and those were much better. I do want to give them credit there. The beer-battered fries were actually quite good. I asked my wife and sister what they thought of their meals, and both of them were incredibly disappointed. My wife got a salad with chicken, and it was very boring. Again, it was something we could make better at home for cheaper. My sister got the salmon, and she was not impressed at all. I read through some of the other reviews, and I think a lot of them may be from locals, whereas I was just visiting town. But I agree with many of the negative points people have made, and I've already said it here: the food just isn't good, especially considering the prices they're charging. I'd recommend looking for a different restaurant in the area. If management happens to read this review, I think they could improve things by reviewing the quality of the food they're serving and working to improve the overall taste. Otherwise, they should consider lowering prices to better match the quality of the food. The portion sizes were good, and that is another thing I do want to give them credit for. At the end of the day, maybe we just didn't order the right things, but no one at our table enjoyed their meal enough to want to go back. This place needs a lot of work, and I hope they have better success in the future. Next time we are in town, though, we will be going somewhere else. read more

Have been an enthusiastic customer for YEARS. I grew up in the area and have always loved coming to hilltop. After the introduction of a new strawberry walnut salad a few years back, which I fell in love with, I had developed a tradition of coming to eat that salad every birthday. I would get it really any chance I could, it even won out over their chicken flippers. Well today 7/5/26, I ordered that same salad and it came out to our table made completely different than before. Normally this salad consists of fancy salad mix (only greens, no other veggies or iceberg lettuce), strawberries, walnuts, blue cheese, and chicken with lemon poppy seed dressing. It normally is a very tasty salad that I get without blue cheese. The only edits I have ever had to ask for, was the blue cheese to be withheld. Today it consisted of some cheap salad mix of shredded carrots, shredded cabbage, and iceberg lettuce. Not at all the same taste or lettuce that the salad had before. I took a few bites but very quickly noticed the difference. We had a large party seated all eating, with a few of us ordering salads, and it was also the day after a major holiday. I thought they maybe used the wrong salad mix in mine and brought this up to our server. He went and checked with the kitchen staff and came back to inform me that his manager will be coming to speak to me and correct any errors or answer my questions. (When they need to send a manager to the table, that should have been my first clue that something was about to go wrong) When the manager came to our table, I voiced my questions about the mix used and was informed by the manager: "I've worked here for twenty years and in those twenty years, this salad has been made exactly the same." Immediately started blaming me for not understanding that I should have asked for that salad to be made with a different mix if I didn't want the cheap mix they served me. IT'S NOT SUPPOSED TO BE MADE WITH THAT MIX IN THE FIRST PLACE, but how is a customer supposed to know that "salad greens" as listed on their specials, means a mix of other veggies, when that is not specified?! I normally would not make a stink about food in general as I am pretty understanding but this is a $16 salad that I get on special occasions only -because it is 16 DOLLARS FOR A STINKING SALAD. I asked for the manager to either comp it off the bill and take it back, or to fix the salad. They didn't seem keen on either of those options, but seemed to be very pushy that I was incorrect and should basically just eat the food as is. The entire interaction with this manager was unprofessional, blame filled, and quite frankly put a sour taste in regard to ever eating here again. If I could give less than one star I would. The manager and apparently even their higher management doesn't seem to actually take criticism. They seem to just blame the customers for any bad experiences. Take a look at some of the other negative reviews they've received and their responses. Goes to show that they are more than happy to take your money when things go right, and even more happy to take your money AND blame the customer when things go wrong. read more

Solid fish fry on a Friday. Everyone was very kind and fast. A Friday in Wisconsin for fish fry usually means a long wait time. We were told 25 minutes, but probably only waited 15. Bad bar food in a cozy atmosphere. Nothing more, nothing less. We came because it had higher than average ratings for being a bar and grill. Let me start on a high note saying the service was great! Also nice selection of local beers on tap. Here comes the down side... I should've known when the food was coming out of the kitchen so quickly that it wasn't homemade. We started with cheese curds with a dill ranch, which was good. Nothing out of the ordinary, but still decent. Next my partner ordered a cup of chicken dumpling soup, which was broth and OK, but you could've gotten it from a canned soup as well. Therefore, I think that's where it came from just a can nothing spectacular. Next we shared a brisket sandwich, which was on a great fresh pretzel roll, however, there was no smoky flavor in the brisket and it was fatty. Basically disgusting, don't order this maybe there's something better on the menu we missed. We were going to have dessert but after having such bad food, we decided to forgo it and got a candy bar at the gas station on our trip back to home. If you're looking for great local beers, check it out can't say that it's the only place in town, but it's still cozy in here and the service was good. We had a great lunch here! It was a reunion of 4 sisters and our mom and the staff was awesome. We decorated and brought a cake for one of us having a birthday and our server prepped the cake and brought it out after our meals--which were great, hot and tasty. I highly recommend the BLT with lots of crispy bacon. I'll be back next time I'm in town! read more

Sunday was the second time visiting the Hilltop Pub & Grill in Steven's Point. The first time was a couple of years ago. Both times, the food and service was very good. Hilltop has a very unique atmosphere. Upon entering the building, the foyer is large whiskey barrel turned into a small, round room with a door to the interior of the restaurant. This let's you see how think such a barrel is. Throughout the entire restaurant, The walls are covered in pictures of old community activity. Some of it looks like pictures of newspaper article. Probably most are reprints or pictures of pictures. Still, it all gives the restaurant a very woodsy, nostalgic vibe. We all various custom sandwiches with either the kettle chips or home fries. The Mushroom Swiss, Black & Bleu, and the Chicken Parm sandwiches were tasty, even as leftovers. It was a chilly day, and the coffee was made fresh for us... Twice. First time here. I was quickly seated at 5:00pm on a Thursday (note: by 6:00 the place was busy). My waitress was friendly and efficient. I tried a summer cocktail (cucumber mojito-- delicious), fried pickle spears (amazing -- hot, crispy, very tasty), and the taco salad (fresh ingredients but just OK taste). The menu has a large variety of items so everyone can find something. It is a casual place; any attire is fine. Overall, I would recommend the place. Went here on Sunday 3/21/2024 @ 11:30am(St Patrick's Day): Went here for the first time to meet a friend. It got busy fast. We got a table right away and took our time. Place had extra employees on staff to wait of people dining in. Love the lay out of this place. If sports is your thing, they had plenty of tv's in the bar area. They had great specials. I got a crispy chicken sandwich and fries. Very good. Hot and fresh. Staff were all friendly. Our waitress did a great job. It was very kind and professional. I would recommend this establishment. I stopped for the any day fish fry and it was next to my hotel with a convenient path into the property, with all the construction traffic with almost a 15 minute commute to get the last half mile to my hotel I didn't want to leave. The place is very popular because it was packed with every table taken but no one at the bar so I ordered my drink and the cod fish fry to go eat in my room because I didn't want to eat at the bar. The very young woman bartender didn't look old enough to even drink but was making all the drinks. The fish fry came before I could even finish my drink. The cod fish fry looked good with 4 pieces and battered frys. The frys were good with crispy outer and soft on the inside. The fish was flakey with a thin beer batter and also good. The tarter sauce was very average and the coleslaw was average commercial. Was it the best fish fry no, but to get one on a non Friday that really hit the spot it was pretty good and it filled my craving. read more

Dropped off our daughter at school and needed some lunch before saying goodbye and heading home. This is our second time here. We like the food and the service because they were consistent with the last time we stopped in. The use of barrels for decoration and the entrance are unique. My chicken sandwich was tender but kind of bland. The mushrooms, grilled onions, and Swiss were the stars of this sandwich but wished the chicken breast was instead. I like the meat to be able to stand on its own but in this case, was just texture. We'll still be back because they have a large menu to try. read more

I've been here numerous times and my reviews would probably very between a 3 and 4 star. This particular review was for Saturday night prime rib. I've never ordered prime rib from here before but I was pleasantly surprised. It was reasonably priced and had good flavor. I'd go there again for it. But being there on a Saturday is not the way to go unless you don't mind waiting. We waited almost an hour with our group and there's not really much room to stand around. With the serving station and door being on one side of the bar it's really tight and you are always in someone's way. If they would utilize those bar tables for people waiting it would be much better! read more

Giving four stars because the food was good, the beer was great, and the service was stellar (her name was asked to be withheld but she is also a bartender there and she is awesome). We had two of the cheesesteaks and a burger. I upgraded to the waffle fries and they were not that good. The chips are pretty good so choose those. The cheesesteak was good, loved the Paper Jack cheese, and they added mushrooms. The bread was very soft and the sandwich was comforting to eat. Great place to visit. Our daughter's salad was excellent but my burger was tasteless. To make a good burger it must be fresh ground 80/20, this meat was way too lean and I think started with a frozen puck. Right off the highway, it's a great place to stop and eat when traveling. Covid: wear your mask anytime you aren't seated. Hubby and I each had the thinly sliced beef (aka Philly cheesesteaks) and added mushrooms per the recommendation from our waitress. She was right. The mushrooms were delicious on there. The bread is squishy, light and perfect for this sandwich. Loved the tender meat as it does not get stuck in your teeth. No flossing required. Hubby's came with waffle fries (save your money and don't up charge to these). Mine came with the kettle chips. Yum. Teenage son ate their bacon cheeseburger with bbq sauce and he devoured it. Was out of town for work and needed a good dinner before bed. Did a quick yelp search and found this place very close to my hotel and boy am I glad! As most reviews have said.. typical bar food, but GOOD typical bar food. Portion sizes were good and prices were good. They also have a good beer selection. Plenty of tap selections as well as import bottles and a pretty decent mixed drink menu as well. I had the brisket burger on the pretzel roll. The meat was flavorful and tender, and I upgraded to the battered fries.. Definitely worth it! The server was swift and efficient and very knowledgeable on the beer and menu selections.
