    Hill Country Inn Lobby

The Hill Country Inn is located right on Hwy 29, just west of Mason's historic town square. After your dually rolls to a stop into the double porte-cochère, you may find yourself greeted by the bubbly and friendly manager, Crystal, in the lobby. Crystal does a swell job of completely disarming you (not literally; this is hunting country), and you may begin to believe that this will be a nice place to stay. Unfortunately, it is not. Let's start with the bad: This is an inn for hunters, desperados, and people who think a Motel 6 is luxurious. The sad truth is that the Hill Country Inn is dank and dirty. The carpet floors are dark and sticky with time, grime, and bodily fluids (probably deer blood). The air conditioner may or may not work properly. The king sized bed bowed visibly right along the center from overuse. The shower heads sprinkle water and are so low that a grown man is better off kneeling. Our bath faucet knob kept falling off. The walls are streaked and stained with faded fluid from sometime in the past (deer blood? something else?). Although the rooms are nonsmoking, you might just wind up in a room where someone didn't care about the $200 smoking surcharge. I'm not sure what the $200 surcharge is for--certainly not for cigarette smoke abatement. The ice machine is conveniently located on the other side of the unlit parking lot, around the corner in a dark nook. Watch out for mountain lions. Now for the good: Ample parking right in front of your room's door for hasty egress. Crystal, the manager, was really nice! The bed linens (not the weird, fake comforter) were honestly quite clean and soft--same with the pillows. The mattress was saggy, but surprisingly comfortable. Cable TV! Free wifi! Super cheap! You can bring pets for a small charge, too.

You approach the resort by dirt roads, but they are well maintained and no problem for our sedan. The Tesla nav system was accurate. We had no problems getting there and back. Kelly and Brian are excellent hosts. Brian can regale you with many anecdotes from Central Texas history, most of which I had not heard before, even though we've lived in the Lone Star State for 38 years. Our room was quiet, cool, and comfortable. The lobby is also quiet and is a great place to sit and read. There are two very sweet dogs that have the run of the place. We had a lot of fun interacting with them. You can walk the grounds and along the dirt roads with nearly zero traffic. I do recommend sturdy hiking boots, as cockleburrs are plentiful. There are also venomous snakes in this area, although we did not see any. Better safe than sorry. We will certainly return. I'm thinking March or April will be perfect to catch the wildflowers and get in before the summer heat. Please the attached photo captions for additional comments.
