Initially, we met at my home to work with my dogs, and then, after Sheryl moved out of state, we were able to work by phone when new issues came up. Sheryl is extraordinarily compassionate and empathic towards both people and dogs, and she taught me to observe my dogs' behavior and be supportive rather than frustrated. My dogs are relaxed and there is more tail-wagging in our home, and when doing conformation and performance events, they are more confident, enthusiastic---and easier to train! Sheryl is also a fantastic instructor in the Tellington TTouch Training, and with her guidance, I started using this method to deepen my bond with my dogs. I have worked with many different dog trainers, and Sheryl is the best!

Our dog, Flash, is a rescue mutt who had been abandoned, and Sheryl's approach worked great for him. She used positive reinforcement, and was always gentle. Flash responded really well to her, and everyone else who we know who has hired her has been pleased with the results. Sheryl came to our home for private lessons, and was fabulous. (She travels around the Peninsula to various clients during the week.) I like that Sheryl has a lot of patience and found a way to make our dog think learning can be fun. Our dog had a lot of anxiety, and she helped him relax and enjoy learning. She also does some bodywork on pets, if clients want that along with the training: Jin Shin Jyutsu (like acupressure) Tellington TTouch (like Feldenkrais for animals) We treated Flash to some of her bodywork, and he went from hyper and anxious to super, ultra-calm and mellow. Sheryl's definitely one of his favorite humans. We were afraid we'd have to find our previously wild dog a new home after having a baby, but we've learned a lot from her and we're a happy family! We credit Sheryl (and some key lay-out changes suggested by baby-proofer Larry Mitchell) with enabling us to keep our dog after having our baby. That was HUGE! We did some clicker training (not initially, but later on), and our most useful command (with or without the clicker) is "In your crate." Sheryl adjusted to what our needs were, so we learned what was a priority for us when we needed it. Thanks to Sheryl, Flash also knows (among others) on your bed, shake, wait, sit, stay, down, touch, and where's daddy?.

Scheduling the intro class was super easy. I was asked to keep him away from the other class as dogs don't socialize there. Well, we got there and we're super impressed with the location. Dalek ended up being the most behaved dog there (behaved better than the good canine citizen dog that was there). We had a lot of fun and I knew I wanted to sign Dalek up. After speaking with the instructor there, she suggested I sign up for beginning agility and I decided I would like to sign him up to behavior and motivation class in addition. I emailed Stu (I think he might be the owner?) And expressed my interests. Didn't hear back from him so followed up again a week later. Got an email saying he is looking into it. Another week passed and no response. I sent another email asking if I should look else where. He responded by saying that no instructor wanted to take him because he isn't well behaved. This came from a person that wasn't even there and was going based on my comment that Dalek is playful. I was really surprised by this as it was the intro instructor recommendation and opinion that "Dalek will do great in beginner agility". Needless to say, I found another agility place where Dalek is loved and all staff there are surprised that he wasn't wanted here.

I had been wanting to start my mini Australian Shepherd with agility training ever since I got him, however, most places will not allow you to start until your dog is a year old. I've always been the believer that the earlier you start the better, so I did a lot of online research trying to find places that have agility classes for puppies. This place is the only one that really teaches the skills of agility, not just the obstacles. They have a pretty intense exam to get into the class, which I appreciate because I want my dog to be on the same level as his classmates. The trainers are HIGHLY knowledgeable as they all compete with their dogs and are certified. I feel extremely confident in asking them any questions I might have. Each class is only 8-9 dogs, which is fantastic because puppies can have a really hard time focusing if there are lots of other dogs in the class. It also allows for one on one time with the trainers. I am extremely pleased with the level of training we are receiving as well as the pace set to learn new things. I fully intend on continuing through the training sessions as long as Auzzy continues to enjoy himself and excel.

There was so much anxiety for both of us. I'm a complete new dog owner with little to no experience. And right from the beginning Jared was patient, professional, and really took the time to learn and explain my dog's behavior and our specific concerns. I had some concerns about leash training and how my dog responded to visitors at the door. Jared guided us with step by step approaches that were easy to follow. And almost immediately after our first visit, I started noticing behavioral changes with my dog. I even noticed the changes on our walks. The tips and techniques regarding leash training was so helpful. Things that I never even thought would affect my dog's behavior, Jared brought to light. He made the whole process feel manageable and truly gave me tools to build my confidence and my relationship with my pup. It's clear Jared truly cares about the dogs he works with and their families. He's passionate about what he does, and I'm so grateful for his help and would highly recommend him to anyone looking for an effective and compassionate dog trainer.

She was quiet and a bit confused in those early days, and we honestly didn't know what "normal" even looked like. We started working with Jared literally the day after we brought her home, and that made all the difference. What stood out right away is that he doesn't just train the dog, he helps you understand your dog's psychology. That shift was huge for us. Instead of guessing or reacting, we started to feel like we actually knew what she needed and how to respond. He guided us through the basics like potty training and getting her to sleep through the night, and once those clicked, life got dramatically easier. More importantly, he gave us a framework we can keep using as new challenges come up. Our puppy still has some separation anxiety and can be a bit needy, but now it feels manageable. We're making steady, incremental progress and feel confident we have the tools to keep going. Jared has also been great with our whole family. He builds trust quickly, explains things clearly, and makes everyone feel comfortable and capable. You never feel judged or overwhelmed. If you're a first-time dog owner, especially with a young puppy, I'd strongly recommend working with him early. It sets the right foundation and saves you a lot of stress down the line.

Just Rewards - Graduation from "Basic Manners"

We started class a week after we got them...and a week before the COVID-19 shelter in place started. Wendy quickly and seamlessly shifted the class online. That turned out to be great for our dogs since it meant fewer distractions than in-person classes. The class was a great way for us to bond with our newly adopted dogs, to get ourselves back in the mindset of training them (and, ahem, training ourselves), and to work through a few issues that came up with them. Henry, our just turned 2 year old greyhound, started exhibiting increasing reactivity to small dogs when we were on our walks around the neighborhood. So after Basic Manners ended, I enrolled us in Rowdy Rover (also online due to COVID-19), and it has made a HUGE difference. The class built on the foundation of Basic Manners, and has given me tools to redirect his frustration and excitement. That, in turn, has built his confidence, and we are both happier on our walks now. Wendy is a great trainer and behaviorist. She breaks everything down into steps that the dogs can learn, and makes you feel supported as you work with you dog. The homework between classes is fun and builds on the classwork, and I could see the progression in Henry's behavior from week to week. I would highly recommend Basic Manners for all new dogs and their people, and I can now highly recommend Rowdy Rover as well!

I sent an email quickly to make sure that classes were actually going to be held. We specifically took the Rowdy Rovers class with Wendy. I want to start off by saying that Wendy is an amazing trainer. She is super knowledgeable and genuinely cares about the success of your pup/dog. She also wants owners to be successful. It's important to note that you should take this class with realistic expectations. Don't go into this thinking that 5 weeks later, you're dog will miraculously not be reactive anymore. She makes sure you have the tools to continue working on your dog's reactivity well beyond the class. Since the end of class, we have made strides. However, we still have a long way to go. Because of this class, I've been able to take my dog outdoors more often, which is what I've been wanting to do from the start. I have been eyeing some of her online courses, so hopefully we can take classes with her again in the near future.
