VERY IMPORTANT INFORMATION: As the website and Yelp info is not updated I will do so here (-: K9 Comrades has a new location: 175 South Hill Drive in Brisbane. Park on the street and there is a "fence" with a chain link, walk down the path until you see a gated area with a field. That is where training is held. Puppy/beginner class: Mondays and Thursdays at 6pm-7pm, Saturdays and Sundays at 9:30am-10:30am. Intermediate classes from what I understand fall right after the puppy classes (I still take my Akita to puppy/beginner). Not sure about French Ring. I follow the Instagram @k9comrades for class updates, cancelled classes, etc. but this new info is very important as I followed the website instructions on my first day, which was at the wrong location, and then didn't actually make it out to my first class after that until a month later. NOW, onto my experience: I was recommended Larry's K9 Comrades through a friend who owns multiple German Shepherds. I now own a 1 year old Akita, and if you know a little bit about the breed they are stubborn and aggressive by nature. He works super well with humans, adults and children alike, and smaller dogs, but is super unpredictable with dogs of his size or larger. Larry and Antonio (who was the trainer on my first day) are super knowledgeable. If you read the blurb on their website under "About," you will understand why. After my friend recommended this training to me, and after I did my research, I was already very impressed with Larry's background. When I first met Larry, he asked me about my dog as he looked "leaner" than other Akitas he had seen. This is because I own a Japanese Akita and not an American Akita. Larry mentioned he would have to "look up and research the breed" and to me that dedication to learning about my dog's nature was already a huge plus for me. He tailors to every dog's need and learns the best way to work with each dog's personality. I have been to K9 Comrades (every single class) and am super happy with how Koga is turning out. Yes, he has his moods and will not listen and occasionally growl at other dogs (classic Akita), but for the most part I am happy with his progress. I went to two classes off a recommendation from a friend. The instructor is nice and engaging, but I didn't really like that he did not start class on time (10 minutes late) . Everyone was there on time and ready to go, but he wanted to keep chatting with folks from a previous class. There was also an exercise that the instructor decided to do that involved taking dogs off leash. My pup was attacked by an aggressive german Shepard during this exercise. I would have preferred that unfriendly dogs would have been kept on leash for the safety of other dogs. read more

Came here based on a recommendation from a fellow GSD owner and friend. It's been a while since my puppy has been in a obedience training course and of course he is starting to get big and needs more training because he isn't listening as well. Glad my friend recommended this place because Larry really knows what he is doing (He has a credible background of training big dogs). Obedience Training happens on Thursday nights, and Saturday and Sunday mornings. Usually obstacle courses are involved and sport training happens right after obedience training (your dog needs to undergo evaluation before he/she begins sport training). I've only been here twice and I will tell you this... my dog listens so much better to me now! Seriously. It's amazing. He sits when told, down when told, still working on stay, but he's getting better. More practice and he might be ready to stay put for a whole 30 minutes!! (: Classes range from an hour to two. It varies in time. Larry is knowledgable and he knows so much about dogs! Seriously I think he is a true dog whisperer. He knew exactly how to correct my GSD and start him off right for training. I highly recommend this place if you have large breed dogs (shepherd family: German, Dutch, Czech, etc). If you don't feel comfortable using a dominant collar or pinch collar though, you may have to look elsewhere because we use those in his obedience training classes. Long over due! Larry was recommended to me by a good friend of mine. I rescued a puppy from a dog meat farm in March 2015. In the beginning my pup was pretty timid and shy. However, he begun to show fear aggression, dominance and degrees of separation anxiety. After all, he was caged with a bunch of other puppies and had to fight for food in his first 4 months of life. Fast forward...I actually started to become afraid of my pup and was at a loss at the behaviors he was showing such as resource guarding and being nippy and darting at others. So it has been about 3 months since I started taking my pitbull puppy to k-9 comrades and it was the best decision I have ever made! Larry is super knowledgeable about dogs and answers any questions I have. Since taking my puppy here, he has learned how to become a well mannered dog. It may have been a year since we last took our dog to Larry's class. Time flies but I am still so grateful to have found Larry and always want to write him a review as he very well deserves one. We have a husky pit mix full of energy! He was a strong puppy over 70 lbs and pulled crazy on leash. But just after one week of taking Larry's class, big improvement already! We were not sure about pinch collar before, but once you learn the right kind to buy and right way to use from Larry, our walk is enjoyable as our dog is so much more responsive. I first reached out to Larry regarding his private training sessions as I figured who to train my newly adopted doggo than someone who trains police k9s. I thought my newly adopted doggo needed obedience training but also was going through separation anxiety which resulted in destructive chewing. We did 3 sessions before he honestly told me that he thinks I should stop doing private sessions as our dog had a hard time focusing. With the 1 hr of private session she would only stay focused for 20mins. The last session we did before he told me to cut the private sessions she didn't want to do anything and not even food could motivate her. She just wanted to sniff around and explore. He said she didn't have behavioral problems such as being aggressive towards dogs or humans so he thinks she just needs basic obedience training which we can do in group classes. He said he could continue taking my money for the private sessions but we wouldn't get much out of it. I really appreciate his honesty and the fact that he could have continued having me go to private classes and just take my money for who knows how long but he didn't. It shows you what kind of person he is and that he is someone you can trust. I went to two group classes but then my work schedule got really crazy in which I wasn't getting off early enough from work to attend. I will however be back though! Once my busy season ends. Larry Johnson and K-Nine Comrades has changed both my dog and my quality of life. When I first started training with Larry my dog was extremely dog, people and child reactive and after just 6 weeks of attending 2 classes a week my dog is now playing with other dogs and I am able to allow people to enter my home without putting her in another room. I have worked with multiple trainers around the City and have seen noting like the results we quickly accomplished working with Larry. I have a 4 year old dog, people and child reactive Pit-bull. Although she is the love of my life, to say that having her has been challenging and has limiting would be a vast understatement. About 2 years ago I had to make the decision not to let her off leash anymore, she had gotten into to many confrontations and I could not trust her to make her own decisions. It had gotten so bad I had become incapable of walking her down the sidewalk and passing other dogs without her lunging at them, barking and trying to attack. She would also growl at certain people and kids. Just getting from my apartment to my car became a huge hassle let alone getting her enough exercise. I seemed to be in a constant state of hyper vigilance with her that made walking her more work than fun. Although I had raised my dog in puppy classes once a week for the first 6 months we were back to the drawing board. I had worked with 2 other private trainers here in the City over the past few years before I met Larry. Although both of these trainers were effective and we made headway, they were expensive and I walked away with a dog that I felt I needed to continue keep separated from other dogs and people and was told that she would never be able to interact with other dogs. All the reasons that I had gotten a dog had suddenly become a liability and a burden. I had become so used to molding my life around my dog that when Larry approached me on the street and gave me his card I realized I had become complacent. Larry had a confidence about him with my dog that made me want to peruse working with him. When I called him he told me about his approach which although sounded scary and against everything I had been taught made perfect sense to me. Larry's approach was to bring her to his class where she would be around and interact with other dogs in a structured and disciplined environment. And that keeping my aggressive dog away from other dogs just reinforced in her that she needed to be fearful of the other dogs. I would be lying if I told you that I was not terrified to bring my dog into this environment, at this point it had just become second nature for me to assume that she would become aggressive. Larry immediately helped me feel safe and comfortable and it was evident that he knew how to hold the space of our group. I immediately liked the go at your own pace attitude and the amount of structure and help that was offered. Although we work in a group environment I always feel like he has an eye on my dog and me and is not going to let anything happen. For the first few weeks of class my dog was was growling, with hackles up and lunging at the other dogs, I had to just keep trusting the process as well as her and myself. As the weeks progressed I noticed that she became more relaxed and with that so did I. Then one day at class, with the help of one of the assistants Gus, my dog started playing with his dog. After 2 years of not having been able to interact with another dog she was playing! Although that was 2 weeks ago now my heart is still exploding with joy and my friends cannot believe how much my pit has changed in such a short time. Since we have been back she continues to play with certain dogs in the class making new friends each week and her whole demeanor has changed walking down the street. I am so excited to continue to work with Larry and this great group of people, I cant wait to see what more I can accomplish with my dog. I worked with Larry for the past 2 months with my Cane Corso, Senna, and her social issues with men. What I like about Larry is that he doesn't use a cookie cutter approach in dealing with her. They are extremely understanding and sensitive to her issues. In dealing with her, they applied specific exercises on her issues with motivation, encouragement, and firmness. During the weekend training, Larry has an agility and obstacle course that Senna, who showed initial apprehension, now breezes through the course. She moves over the course swiftly and confidently. The agility training also helps build confidence in both the owner/handler and dog. There's also obedience training during the weeknights, so, if you're motivated, you can train up to 3-4 times per week. Senna is also involved with dog sport and some of her social issues were diagnosed with training too young, and with too much pressure. Larry and his dog sport compadre, Daryl, implemented a much more low pressure approach and strictly on defensive work to focus less on the decoy and more on the target; It actually is more play/playful so she's much more engaged. Senna is now much less aggressive toward men and showing a higher level of comfort performing dog sport. I also appreciate how Larry watches how I handle my dog and speak to my areas of improvement with encouragement and levelheadedness. I've learned a lot over the past several weeks to watch for behavior in myself, my dog and other dog(s) to better assess the potential of volatility or confrontation. I have had the pleasure of working K-Nine comrades for about a year now. He came highly recommended from our breeder and was aware of the challenges we were facing with our Belgian Malnois, Kane. We tried other dog training services and we were asked not to come back because Kane was so head strong but he was no match for Larry at K-9. I have been going to K9 Comrades since December 2015 with my Mastiff puppy. I have been to other Dog trainers in the past and at the time thought yea, this is really good training. Then I was told about Larry and K9 Comrades from a few friends. We decided to give them a try. From day one with Larry the training we are getting is truly the Best training we have experienced. My dog has learned a lot form the short time I have been going to K9 Comrades. My dog was very fearful of the Agility course that he sets up and over time he has built up his confidence to accomplish most of the obstacles in the course. Two months ago I also enrolled my rescue Vizsla mix dog to the training to help build on her socialization and reinforce the prior training she had in the past. She has become more confident in herself and is learning to overcome her fears from the past training she has had. She also has learned a lot and they both are doing great. Both of my dogs have learned all of their commands and turned into become very well behaved, social and obedient dogs. His training is food and/or toy motivated with some correction only if needed. He has a gentle approach with the dogs but, he is firm when he has to be. He is very knowledgeable about numerous types of training (Obedience & socialization, agility, French Ring, training Police dogs, etc), dog breeds, and dog behavior to say the least. He works with puppies, adult dogs, dogs which are dog and/or people aggressive, dogs that are timid and more. He is very observant of all of the dogs and knows their personalities and behavior. He is fun to learn and work with because he is very easy going and has a lot of patience. He not only works with adults training the dogs he also will also work with kids with training their dog. The price of training is very reasonable compared to the other places I have been to. He uses temptations and distractions (skateboards, bicycle, rakes, balls, brooms, different noises, etc.) that they may come in contact with in public to help them overcome and not react to.these distraction. I have a 1yr old Australian Cattle dog who has been through obedience and intermediate training and I was told to keep a muzzle on him because he was dog aggressive. I went to Larry at K-Nine Comrades for help. Larry was more than happy to take the time and meet with us one on one to give his assessment of Cooper. Larry worked with me and Cooper and after about a month of training, I am happy to say that Cooper is now very social and loves running and playing off leash with other dogs. I found K-Nine Comrades through a friend that I had trained with before. I have a Presa Canario, named Brinks, which I had been working toward dog sport competition. His training had taken a bad turn with a previous trainer and I thought my dog just lacked the ability to do the work. I was in the process of giving him to a family member as a pet, when I decided to get a few other opinions at the recommendation of my friend. I first took him to another well-known bay area dog trainer for an evaluation. That trainer explained that it is obvious the dog loves to do the work, but he seemed intimidated by the sleeve. He thought too much pressure had been put on the dog to early and it was too early to decide the dog is not capable of doing the work. He also thought that Brinks would likely benefit from a fresh perspective in dog training. I then took Brinks to Larry at K-Nine Comrades, in Brisbane. He evaluated Brinks and came to the same conclusion as the well-known dog trainer (without me mentioning the other opinion I had gotten). Larry's approach to dog sport was very different from previous training Brinks had done. It was low pressure and fun for Brinks and I. This resulted in Brinks biting a soft sleeve and holding on to it for the first time in the first session. As soon as I saw results from just one session I decided to discussed price with Larry (which is a steal considering his level of service) and signed Brinks up to continue training at K-Nine Comrades. In the short time we've been with them I've seen a great increase in Brink's confidence. He even has a better grip when playing tug with me. He's not ready for competition yet, but I can see improvement in him from month to month. We'll be attempting our Schutzhund BH (a dog obedience title) in 2013. Larry is a very knowledgeable and humble dog trainer. He has obvious passion for what he does and it shows in his care for the dogs and customers alike. I can see why so many police forces use him for training and I'm grateful such a resource is available to the average dog sport enthusiast like me. read more

We love Larry!! My 10 month old Rottweiler has been attending class for only two times and I already see results. I was hesitant to take him to training class, since he has some social and behavioral issues, but Larry is very patient working with animals and has an amazing positive attitude. The price is way better than other trainers, it's only $125 per month, and the quality of the lessons are amazing. I'd definitely recommend this class to anyone and everyone! read more

Seriously the best thing we have ever done for our dog. Larry knows what he's doing and our puppy loves his classes! We have learned so much about our puppy since starting these classes about his breed and how to train him! Our German shepherd is the first big dog I've had and at first when he started getting bigger, it was getting a little hard for me to walk him because he's so energetic and strong! Ever since Larry's classes, Niner walks right beside me, doesn't pull, and is just overall so well behaved! Even if you think you have a well trained dog, you should still consider taking your dog to these classes! You meet a bunch of genuinely great people and your dog will love all the human and dog interaction! Whenever anyone asks why our dog is so well behaved, I refer them to K Nine Comrades! I really enjoy coming to these classes and watching Niner have fun while learning as well! It's such a great bonding experience too read more
