Yikes...I should have paid attention to all the negative reviews. I went prepared though....limited my questions, was polite, and had my measurements for the amount of mulch I needed. But, I soon felt like I was in the Seinfeld soup episode "No soup for you". After the amount was calculated, I had a few more questions regarding delivery ...and was quickly met with an exhasperated "are you buying today?" from the older "gentleman" at the counter. I said I was getting all the info today and I needed to go home to check on the size of the tarp I had to hold the mulch as well as whether I wanted black or brown mulch. Then, I asked if I could call in the order and pay by cc. My intent, all along, was to purchase from Highland Farm as I live in the area and didn't want to shop farther out and did want to support a local business. I was not disputing the cost of the mulch or delivery charges he quoted me at all. When I asked if he could write down the price/delivery for both the brown and black mulch for me , that's when things went south. He refused, saying something about me just going home and not returning or some nonsense about me holding him to the price(?). He declared I'd get the price again when I called or came back. Huh? I was stunned, but remained silent and decided not to engage with this sour, unpleasant man. I simply said ok, thank you, and left. In the end I purchased the mulch elsewhere where I was treated with respect, and paid less for both the mulch and delivery. We bought our tree from this local farm because we like to support local businesses, but we were not greeted with the friendliness you typically find in Wakefield. The cashier was quite rude in a time where small businesses need support. Unfortunately don't think we will be back, we'd rather support a business that has more pleasant staff. Had a tree planted and they did a wonderful job. First they helped me select the right tree for my yard, the light, the amount of space...then it was easy to schedule delivery and planting. The two employees who planted the tree were amazing - so nice and mindful of the other plants around in a tight spot. Also, on the way out one of the guys spotted another (smaller) tree I had planted myself that was starting to lean and they fixed it for me! I had a split leaf maple that was moved during a driveway project and was going to die if it wasn't immediately replanted. The owner of the company called me right away and came the next day (during busy season) to help move the tree. They charged what I feel was a very reasonable rate for the amount of time and effort it took them. They were not only kind, honest and friendly but also super sweet to my three young kiddos that were looking at them work. I can't say enough kind things about them all. I'm quite surprised by all of the negative reviews. We stopped by yesterday for the first time as a more "famous" garden nursery center was stuffed to the gills with people, and I wanted a faster shopping experience as we already had a few plants in the car. I called before we came, and the fellow who answered the phone was gregarious and helpful. When we came by, we found a wider native selection than in quite a few other nurseries, which was thrilling. We picked up several plants and paid. No issues at all. In fact, we're planning to return to pick up a couple more soon. I now consider them one of the must-stop nurseries in RI. read more

Came here with the wife to pick up a pie. Service wasn't a problem. Store is pretty big inside, a ton of random backed goods. We ended up getting an apple pie which was pretty good. It was not the best we ever had and if we were in the area again we might stop by. Nothing so amazing making this a worthy stop to go out of your way for. However, if you are nearby, worth trying. Seems like this place may be hit or miss based on the other reviews which is saddening but that's most places I have been to in New England... read more

Not sure how this place is still business. Stopped here with my sister who was visiting from out of state and the older guy behind the counter could not be more rude. I picked up an apple to smell it and before I had even set it back down he barked "DONT SMELL IT THEN PUT IT BACK!" I thought he was kidding but quickly learned he was not. We exchanged some words and we left. We weren't even there one minute. I was very prepared to buy some stuff there too but no thanks. Will never go back and will never recommend. I don't care how good their produce or whatever might be. I've read similar reviews in other forums too so this was clearly not just an isolated incident. read more

Online said closes at 5pm, arrived at 4pm. Older man standing at gate, made the cut throat sign signaling they were closed. We tried to talk to him. I purchased for bushes for the front of my house in April, three were fine, the fourth, an expensive $79 plant died within three months. The owner, a surely older gentleman has no personality. He didn't even offer a substitute even though he was in the midst of end of the year clearance sale. Lesson learned, next time go to Lowes. read more

Terrible unfriendly service and completely undercooked pies. We bought several for a family cookout and the filling was mush and flavorless while the crust tasted of uncooked lard and was completely under baked. Yes they bake with lard, not butter. read more

I have done business with Highland Farm for years. I have never had any issues there. It's a honest, seasonal business. A reviewer here on Yelp complained after 3 months a $72 purchase died on them and the owner of the farm didn't offer a replacement. Why should they? 3 months later and YOU killed your $72 tree/shrub, not Highland Farm. Also, the owner is not trying to win a personality contest. If he's salty that's ok. Wow. What a rude woman. I came over with my dog after being at the vet next door. She come running out screaming "NO DOGS!" I said I was sorry that I didn't know and I started walking back. She walks up to the sign and points and says "See! NO DOGS!" I said, "I heard you, I said I was sorry. ". She crossed over the walkway and showed me the second sign "NO DOGS!" She yells. I left. We came here today for our Christmas tree... Great selection of fresh local trees, ranging from $25 to over $50.. typical pine, balsam, frasier fir, etc..... We got a perfect triangular 6' balsam fir for $25..which we are definitely pleased with.. The employees wrap and attach the tree to your car for free.... fresh baked pies, cookies, hot cocoa, cider, and Santa Claus also awaits. Definitely recommend! read more

We have gotten our Christmas Tree here for the last 3 years. They are always beautiful and last close to 2 months. The people that work here are lovely and they bag and tie your tree to your car for free. They also sell Allie's donuts! read more

Would give zero stars for customer service if I could. Showed up with my pickup truck to buy some crushed stone. My truck has racks so it is difficult to maneuver a front loader to dump directly into the bed. In the past, I've had soil dumped in which gets all over the roof, the sides, off the back, etc. Not a big deal with soil, but with rocks you're talking about many dents and dings. I asked the man working at the counter (I believe the owner or at least the manager) if he could use the backhoe parked with the rest of the various equipment on site to scoop the crushed stone into my truck bed. "No. Why would I want to do that?" was his response, shaking his head repeatedly. Oh I don't know sir, maybe to effectuate a sale and keep a longtime customer (soil, Xmas trees, baked goods, Halloween hay rides) happy? Just a thought! Needless to say, will not be coming back for my yearly Xmas tree and hay ride. Perhaps next time you'll reconsider driving a tractor 100 feet to the crushed stone which would take you all of five extra minutes (would have paid extra, by the way). Thanks! read more
