We were looking to have a fun day and we decided come here! We made reservations a day before for 12:30pm. We drove a hour to get here from JAX. It was sorta in the country with the road leading to the farm was a gravel/dirt road. If you have a truck have fun on the road but if you have a low trim car like me, go slow! The GPS brought us straight there. We walked to the stalls area and was greeted by Kirk by all the reviews you know he is a man of knowledge for animals! He helped us a lot with riding and have a fun time. The kittens and dogs on his farm are the sweetest they can be! People drop them off at his farm or he finds them abandoned and gives them a nice home to stay at. Before we left he gave us about a dozen eggs for free which we enjoyed a lot! I am writing this review because I need to get something straight. About a year ago I wrote a few bad reviews. I know shame on me.so here's how I really feel about the farm, and the owner (Kirk) I love that place, I am constantly thinking about them. I worked there for 3 years. And in those years, I learned so much about the horses I love so much. It's been a place for me to heal after the passing of my husband and father. Very majestic, calming. Now the website says business hours and. Blah, blah blah,But Kirk is amazing and will do his very best to acomadate u and your family in what ever it is your heart desires. As long as it is legal, and not going to harm the animals. Kirk and Chloe were delightful and fun hosts! We had one of the best days of the summer at Highland Farms at both the petting zoo and horse riding. My granddaughter and hubby were perfectly matched with horses and they enjoyed the many fields and trails open for riding. The horses at Highlands were well trained, very gentle, and enjoyed interacting with people. The petting zoo had all the promised animals in a clean environment. These animals were well loved and very happy to be petted. It was such a caring environment as the farm had taken in several rescue animals and Chloe explained how to pet their blind dog and gave my grands a rare opportunity to see people who put so much energy into their animals. My youngest granddaughter is 2 and Kirk was gentle and helped her feed the horses and other animals. His ponies were raised on the farm and were exceptionally ally gentle with our youngest. read more

I never thought that I'd see myself horseback riding, but I did it right here at Highland Farm! I went on a trip to St. Augustine last year with my family and my Mom ended up planning a horseback riding trip for us in Middleburg which is about 45 minutes away. It's located on a huge ranch and there is no designated parking, so we just parked close to the training stable. Kirk was our trainer and he was awesome! You can tell that he is very passionate about what he does. He's trained many professional horseback riders and used to ride professionally himself! Since it's on a farm, you'll see all kind of farm animals roaming around. We saw a few ducks and a some dogs, and of course the beautiful horses! We got to feed them as well, which can be kind of intimidating, but it was really quite fun. For the practice run, there is a small section where you will get seated and adjusted for your horse. Here, you will learn how to hold the ropes and how to speed up and slow down the horse. You will do a few practice laps and then you will transition to riding throughout the ranch. We weren't as adventurous as many other groups you can say, but we did circle around the ranch a few times until we were tired. Kirk was super attentive and patient with us, and he even let us stay longer than out allotted time! He really made my first time horseback riding super fun and enjoyable! read more

A dirty, Ill-kept farm. The owner is regularly drunk and rarely comes out of his 'office' chair to work with riders. To his credit, he's a good trainer. DO NOT pay in advance; he's owed us @$700 for about 6 months. We don't expect to see the money any time in the near or far future. read more

I found this gem by while looking for family-oriented activities to get the teenagers out of the house, away from the computer games, and and off the Internet. My party consists of my most very significant other, an older teenage young man, and a younger teenage young lady. I have a bit of experience with horses, and while I am a bit rusty, the others in my party have either no either experience, and worse, one of them had a bad experience long ago, and so had mixed emotions about the afternoons activities. While originally I was hoping to find a place to spend an afternoon activity together, as the day got closer, I began hoping for much more. At the top end of my expectations list: I was really hoping to find a place that would introduce them to the joys of horsemanship, and have it be an exciting, memorable event for everyone, and maybe expose everyone to horses at their best; in the hopes they would begin to understand why I light up when I share experiences with my horses I used to own. At the bottom end of the scale for my expectations list: Would have been if the horses to be thoughtless, lifeless, drones with no energy or personality left in them. We have all seen images of the chain of horses walking down a trail, nose to tail, walking as if they were wearing blinders, seemingly unaware of anything around them, even if someone were standing on their back dancing and shooting off firearms. Don't get me wrong... I didn't want them to be tightly wound as to be afraid of a sabre-toothed butterfly. I was really hoping to find they were the thoughtful, independent creatures we know they should be. When we arrived, we made our way over to the barn, met Kirk, spoke with him for a few minutes, went over some safety guidelines, the background of the animals on the farm, and how it all came to be. After speaking with us for a bit, he matched us up with our partners and explained the unique personalities we would be experiencing. I was very pleasantly surprised when we were introduced to our mounts to see that they were all very much thinking beings. It was fantastic to watch as each of my family began making their way 'round the round pen, learning how to communicate with their afternoon partners. After a few minutes going in circles, learning how to ask their partners to turn, move forward, and to stop, we moved into a working paddock. It was in there I was able to watch as everyone slowly began building the basics of trust between them and their mounts. We learned one was stubborn, and while not refusing to go around a tree, she had her own ideas about which side of the tree to go 'round. Another seemed to need her watch reset, as left to her own devices, she kept wandering her way back towards the barn. Another made her way to the water trough, only to take a small sip, and then proceeded to show us how adept she was at blowing bubbles. At one point, one of our riders was a little less assertive than her horse required, and almost instantly one of the one of Kirk's assistants appeared to help by leading them around the paddock and explain how to better communicate what she was asking her partner to do. As for me, well, mine was very responsive, would walk, trot, and cantor when asked, and slip back down just as easily. All in all we really enjoyed ourselves. It was a great afternoon. I think anyone giving less than 5-stars to the Highland Farm likely had invalid expectations. My recommendation is to take your time. Pay attention to Kirk, he has a wealth of knowledge to share, and especially pay attention to the horse, and what it is telling you. If you aren't getting what you are asking for, I'm pretty sure it isn't the horse that isn't listening properly, you're more likely not asking it properly. I could not have asked for a better afternoon, and I will be bring back my family as often as we can! read more

My 11 y.o. granddaughter loved this place. She said next time she visits, she wants to do it again. She had the 45 minute lesson and she learned a lot. The instructors were great. She was given extra special attention because it was just her and the instructors. How fabulous! I felt so good about the experience and I could see/watch her the whole time. I highly recommend. My niece and I had a wonderful time at Highland Farms. I am an experienced rider and it was my 11 year old niece's first time. Kirk was very accommodating to us both. He gave extra instruction and attention to my niece which gave me time to ride and explore the farm. All the animals were very sweet and docile. Max, a rescue dog, greeted us as soon as we pulled up.
