Rudest people on the planet in my opinion! Go to oasis tire for your inspection. Better yet, drive 30 minutes to Fort Davis. It's worth the extra time and money without having to deal with these people! He told me if I leave a bad review that he was going to not pass my inspection!!! That's against the law!!!!! I pulled up 10 minutes before noon and they stop inspections at noon. He said if he can't do it by noon then I have to come back tomorrow. I told him by law he has to do it by posted time... Needed a state inspection. Drove up to the front of the garage door opening. I couldn't find anyone. I was about to leave when a guy comes out. I asked him if they do state inspections. The man said " can't you read (pointing at a tiny paper) it says state inspection from 8-12 pm. I said no I didn't see the small sign. But because of how rude he was being, I said " we'll never mind I won't be coming back anyways". He replied "good, don't come back". Therefore I won't go back :) and I would suggest to anyone to do the same. I'm sure the only ones giving a good rating are family members and friends of his. Lmao. read more

I drove up to get my car inspected and the same low class man that is always there was dismissive and rude yet again, however this time after inquiring about an inspection the lovely man threw his hand over his shoulder to give the body language I'm done you can go because inspection time is over. I have worked in customer service before and its truly about your tone and body language, which was beyond degrading by this employee. I rather drive to any other town to get my vehicles inspected then deal with such a rude individual. Honestly if you're paying for a service you should be respected as a customer and I can say with great certainty that Highland Automotive does not respect their customers. They're the only place in Alpine that does vehicle inspections and they take full advantage of that all while giving you that nastiest attitude. Wow! These guys were outstanding. Far from home towing our trailer out on a 3 week trip, our Ford F-150 would randomly throw a check engine light and then immediately lose power. A very scary and dangerous situation while towing. These friendly folks thoughtfully studied all the possibilities then correctly diagnosed our problem. Water in the fuel. A can of Sea foam fuel treatment and we were back on the road safe and sound. Problem solved. Can't recommend them enough. read more

If I could give less than 1 star I would. Just don't waste your time here. BTW. All I was getting was an inspection. Simple 10 minute thing that they acted like butts about. I was sitting in my car waiting for our turn and the gentleman was very rude about telling me to get out, of the passenger seat. Oh make sure you print out your insurance card. I was on my way to Viva Big Bend and pulling a trailer when my transmission started acting up right outside Alpine. Since it was a Friday, there was nothing I could do until Monday, so I left the vehicle parked until then. Highland Automotive were locally recommended and able to fit me in 1st thing Monday morning. Fortunately, it was an easy fix and they ended up flushing out the old fluid a couple of times, running it through the system slowly, and I was back on the road the next day! I changed my Big Bend hiking plans and headed to the Davis Mountains State Park, in case I had more issues and to be closer to Alpine. The car towed my trailer up the mountain with no problem and I spent a few lovely days hiking the park before heading back to Austin. Andon recommended that I get the fluid flushed again once home, which I did and all is well! I was only charged for transmission fluid and an hour of labor, so a lot less than I was expecting. They are an honest and capable, family run business! read more

I had good reports about this business so I left our car got service on Monday morning. A neighbor put his diagnosis monitor and told me what was wrong and what the car needed. I don't believe in telling a professional what his diagnosis should be so I left it up to the garage to figure it out. Monday afternoon past and I called no diagnosis yet. Tuesday morning I called "we're in the process of diagnosing it now." I asked if the car would be ready Tuesday he said he doubted it. Wednesday late morning the garage called and said the car was ready and the bill would be $95. Hooray that was a lot less than I thought it would be. Great! While the car was in the shop we needed to rent another car so that we could go to work. The rental bill was about $140 plus the $95 for the garage made a total bill of $235. That was OK as long as the car was fixed, but exactly 3.2 miles after leaving the garage the car started doing exactly the same thing that it had done when I dropped it off two days earlier. So what started out to be an inexpensive fix turned out to cost us more than $100 per mile and the car still doesn't run properly. Would I go back? Absolutely not. If a neighbor can plug his diagnostic tool into my car and within one minute diagnosed what's wrong. I can't help but wonder why it took the garage two days and cost me $140 for car rental to do the same thing and not get it right. Sorry Highland Automotive I wish I had better news and I wish my car ran the way it should. Oh yes, I called and let them know the car was doing the same thing that I had wanted fixed. Their response was "we are not responsible for what happens once it leaves the shop." Well maybe they should be responsible for. It fixing what they had two days to diagnose. The son working the front desk acts like you just walked in his house.#2 You have to say why you are there. I could tell he felt the job was inconvenient so he ripped me off.When I ask is this what he does to people in my position who brake down in nowhere you don't mind taking advantage and charging too much? Our family visited the Big Bend area over the Christmas break and one evening, after a canoe trip, we came back to our truck and it wouldn't start. We thought it might be an electrical problem so the wrecker driver recommended we go to Highland Automotive. After dropping the truck off, Andon ran the diagnostics and it turned out to be a simple fix. However, we did notice a coolant leak. I asked him if he could look at it that afternoon since we were scheduled to head back to Houston the next day. He pulled it into the garage right away. After checking it out, he said we needed some parts that he would have to order. The parts came in the next day, Highland installed and tested the system and we were on the road to Houston after that. We had no issues with the truck during our 10-hour drive home. We were charged for parts and an hour of labor, a lot less than I was expecting. Honest people! We will definitely use them in the future if needed when visiting the area and would highly recommend them to anyone else that finds themselves in a similar situation. I'm afraid of gushing, but here goes... I was literally stranded in Alpine thanks to a very complicated issue related to my Honda Element. Andon understood my situation and worked tirelessly and persistently on the problem although they were obviously very busy. Alas! He fixed my car and my pup and I were able to get home safely! On the way, he called twice just to check on me. I tell ya', I have never been treated so well by a mechanic-- ever. He far exceeded his role and was just a great human. All of that....and the price was more than reasonable. I wish I lived closer as Highland Automotive would definitely be my regular place for repairs. Take your vehicle to Highland! Highland took excellent care of me and my vintage '84 Mercedes 300D sedan. A road trip from Austin to Alpine left my car starting poorly and Andon came to the rescue. Even though they were really busy and the lot and shop were full of cars, Andon made space for my car immediately, took the time to listen to the issue, and even spent time under the hood to walk me through the problem (which turned out to be a fuel leak). I wouldn't hesitate to take my car to Highland, especially since it's a family business, and everyone was kind and helpful (Andon and his folks - Sue and Jack - plus the cute dog Lucy). read more

I have gone twice as they offer the only state inspection in the region. could be in part that there is no money in inspections...plus the state regulators come down hard on those services that are lenient towards old or poorly maintained vehicles. still does not excuse the ugly treatment towards customers. read more

One of the previous reviews summed it up as "an honest and capable family run business," and I think that description fits them to a tee. Not a huge shop, but they seem to take great pride in doing honest work by the book. Bought a car for my son, who is moving down to SR. We knew it was going to need some work on the AC compressor. Andon was very up front and gave us options from $1000 for replace everything and have a lifetime warranty on the new compressor - and all the way down to go grab one myself and he'd put it in for 1.1 shop hours. I have done business with Highland Automotive for seven years now, starting with a simple flat tire and now every problem my 275,000 mile pick-up has. I am always treated with respect, but more importantly, my vehicle, nearing the end of its life, is treated with respect as well. I had the misfortune of dealing with another area shop, where they constantly told me "of course it is an old truck" and tried to cut corners. Highland treat the vehicle like it is their own brand new vehicle and I feel as confident in the condition of it now, as I did when it was a year old. Many Alpine, Texas mechanics, where Highland is located, have recently stopped doing inspections. Highland is now one of only two places that does them, and only during limited business hours. My friend came in the morning, and was told to come back between 1 and 2. She arrived 20 minutes before 2, and was told they would not do it then, afterall, even when she explained she is from Terlingua, 80 miles away. She had to make a special trip back the same week, got in line before 1, and then finally got the inspection, which was done by an extremely gruff fellow. Not very user friendly. read more

Andon saved my 2 week vacation. Before leaving Dallas, my car was thoroughly inspected, including battery. So when I had trouble starting car at Indian Lodge on night of December 23, I was sure my 20 year old Solara needed a starter. On December 24 I called AutoZone to see if any Alpine mechanic was open on Christmas Eve. They gave me 2 names - Highland being one. Andon squeezed me into an already busy Christmas Eve half-day, offering to at least diagnose the problem, for which I was grateful (thinking a part might have to be obtained from Midland). I told him I would be staying in Alpine for 2 nights and could wait until after Christmas Day for repair. I'm a 72 year old woman traveling alone - ideal candidate for ripoff. Andon said my starter tested AOK and all I needed was a battery. AutoZone delivered battery and I still had time to drive the Scenic Loop before checking in to Holland Hotel. read more

I came in for an inspection, with my daughter (infant) in her car seat who was sleeping. I handed over my insurance card and set my daughter's seat in one of the 3 open chairs so I could get my keys. The older woman in the office asked me to move my daughter so another (male) customer could sit down. I am in shock. All of the customers in the waiting room immediately started telling me no and to sit with my child. How incredibly rude. I am a new mom and this is my absolute worst experience being out in public. I needed airbags installed on my truck as we were driving across the country. I called Highland automotive two days before to arrange the install of my airbags. I showed promptly at 8 AM since they do not take reservations. I spoke to the representative Aldon in detail before I showed up. The airbags were supposed to be bolt on with a one to two hour installation Per the manufacturers specifications.. I showed up with breakfast burritos in hand and drop the car off and proceeded to walk to 2.5 miles back to the RV park we were staying for the night. About 30 minutes later I received A call from them stating that it would take quite a bit of cutting and welding to install the airbags and they ran out of gas for their torch so they would not be able to install until the following week. I was in quite a bind so I proceeded on with my trip and got the airbags installed in San Antonio. After dropping the car off it was ready within an hour and a half with no major cutting or welding needed. Needless to say I am disappointed with the service I received as well as their inability or unwillingness to work on the vehicle. My hunch Is that they were busy and chose not to work on the car as even a mechanic with Rookie abilities Would have been able to install this without an issue. I would highly recommend not visiting this repair shop and I'm extremely disappointed with the service I received. Stay clear of this place. I'm glad I did not let them cut or weld my truck. The shop in San Antonio was baffled as to why they would need to cut anything. read more

Here you will find a family run operation, and a family that you can trust. I initially needed an oil change and they fit me in to an already busy schedule and did a great job. They were also happy to let me have a new set of tires delivered to the shop and then mounted and balanced them for a fair price. Andon is a great guy and very down to earth. Simply the best customer service I've ever received. We were stuck 500 miles from home and 100 miles from our destination. We received a recommendation from a Brother Mason that Highland Automotive was the best auto care in Alpine. They sure weren't wrong. We arrived after 4:00 and told Andon what we believed the problem to be. He quickly assessed our information and pulled a mechanic from another job and started work on ours. Within 45 minutes we were back in route to our destination. I wish Highland Automotive was in my hometown and if I lived in Alpine they would get all of my automotive repair business. Extremely rude. Terrible service. As soon as I walked in I was looked up and down with the most terrible look I've ever seen. they require cash and paper copy of insurance. I don't even own a printer. Electronic copies of insurance in Texas are valid. They are stuck in the 1900s and it is very sad. Again, extremely rude and they will gladly ruin your day. This place is a serious joke. I went in for a quick inspection and as soon as I opened the door a lady there said "can you please close the door" I wasn't even inside fully and she said that. She was very rude and the man that sits in that nasty office was rude on the phone when I called. They are very racist people. I rather drive somewhere else to get my inspection done. I can honestly say that I have never felt the need to write a review, until today. I called Highland Automotive twice before I came in today "Good Friday". I called once at 9 AM just to verify that they are open and doing inspections today. And once again at 11 AM to inform I was on my way and in need of a car inspection. The woman who answered the phone informed that their, "one guy", who does inspections there, will only be doing them from 8 AM - Noon, then again from 1 PM - 2 PM. So I show up at one, as soon as I pull up I get out of my vehicle, and an elderly man walks out and says "What do you need?" I informed him that I would be needing an inspection. He then says " My machine is down, I have to re order the machine in Austin. It should be up and running by Monday." I let the man know that's understandable and to have a good day. The whole time he was talking, he made no eye contact and was walking away from me. So I decide to call back up there to speak with management and verify this is true. So I call and ask if they are doing inspections today, the lady informs that they are until 2 PM. I then ask her to verify with the inspection guy and she goes on to say that he is in front of her and yes they are doing inspections. Then I can hear a man in the background saying to ask what kind of car i have . I asked her what does it matter and she hung up. I called back to clear the air and figure out what's really going on and she asked where do I live and where am I coming from? I then told her I live here but I'm originally from San Antonio. (I don't know why that was a question either) but I answered to see what she was going to say. The man starts yelling in the phone for me to go back to San Antonio to get my inspection!! I said excuse me!?! And he hung up on me. At this point I decided to just let it go, find another licensed place that does car inspections, and write a review :) This place gets "0" stars for the WORST service.
