I became overwhelmed, and before I even had to ask for help, two waitresses came over with napkins and asked if I was okay. A few moments later, Kirsten, the manager , came over, sat with me, gave me a hug, and genuinely listened while I explained what was going on. She didn't rush the conversation or make me feel like just another customer...she truly cared. She even invited me on a walk around the restaurant to help me calm down, reassuring me the entire time that everything was going to be okay. She showed me the beautiful Tea Room and encouraged me to bring my friends and sister over to enjoy it. That ended up being the highlight of our night. The views, atmosphere, and hospitality completely changed the mood for our entire group. From there, every member of the staff continued to make us feel welcome. The bartender kept us laughing, celebrated with us by pouring shots, and made the experience so much fun. The front host (I'm so sorry I forgot your name!) also checked in on us and made sure we were having a great time. Even the security guard went above and beyond... he held his flashlight up while we were taking pictures so we could have the best lighting for our photos. It may seem like a small gesture, but it perfectly showed how every single person on the team genuinely cared about making our night special. Before we left, Kirsten came back one last time just to make sure everyone was happy... I've been to a lot of restaurants, lounges, and clubs, but I've never experienced service like this, seriously. The staff at Sugar don't just provide great service... they genuinely care about people. That level of kindness is rare and honestly brings tears to my eyes, and it's something I'll never forget. Thank you, Kirsten, and the entire Sugar team, for turning what could have been a disappointing night into one of the most memorable experiences my friends, my sister, and I have ever had. We had the crispy calamari with lemon aioli as well and were impressed by the size of the calamari, the volume of the dish and the taste of the calamari---good seasoning in the breading and the citrusy aioli. Service was great. They had 3 attentive ladies manning the bar and the floor which was adequate for the client crowd, so we were able to get everything we wanted in a timely manner. They have pretty solid local craft beers on tap, so don't think you're going to be let down by trying a beer. They also offer a ladies hour from 6-7 pm which is definitely the time to come. Why take down a customer's name and phone number if you're not going to use it? A simple phone call or text asking if we were still coming could have avoided the entire issue. Because of her error, we then had to wait another 30-40 minutes for an outdoor table, which she recommended because we had our kids with us. During that entire time, not a single manager came over to apologize, acknowledge the mistake, offer empathy, or even offer water or drinks while we waited. The lack of hospitality was honestly shocking. Once we were finally seated, we immediately ordered because our kids were starving. Still, nobody thanked us for waiting or apologized for the inconvenience. Instead, our waitress repeatedly told my son to stop touching the table lamp and kept asking if he was "a good boy," which felt unnecessary and uncomfortable. To make matters worse, the table next to us was smoking cigars directly beside us and blowing smoke in our direction while we were eating with our children. No staff member offered to move us or politely ask the guests to be considerate. The food itself was mediocre at best and extremely overpriced. After we had already been sitting and eating for over 20 minutes, someone finally brought coloring supplies for the kids -- far too late to even matter. She explained that the restaurant was severely understaffed after three employees had recently quit, and the remaining team members were doing the best they could while covering multiple roles. Kayla suggested that we place our order downstairs and assured us she would personally bring our food up to the rooftop. We ordered burgers, and while we waited, she kindly provided complimentary drinks. Throughout the entire experience, Kayla was professional, attentive, and extremely gracious. She handled a difficult situation with a positive attitude and made us feel valued as guests. It was clear that the issue was not with Kayla or the staff who showed up that day. In fact, there were only three people working brunch: Kayla, the chef, and the waiter. Considering the circumstances, they did an incredible job. Kayla truly made the best of a bad situation and deserves recognition for her efforts. My disappointment is with management's handling of reservations. If the rooftop was not ready to receive customers at opening, reservations should not have been accepted, or guests should have been notified in advance. We drove all the way from Tampa to visit Elevar, and it was frustrating to arrive on time for our reservation only to find the venue unavailable and have to wait for service to begin. That said, the rooftop is a really cute spot with a great atmosphere, and there was plenty of convenient street parking. Because of Kayla's outstanding service and the effort made by the small team working that day, we would absolutely return. We just hope management takes steps to ensure guests are properly informed in the future and that staffing issues do not impact the customer experience the way they did during our visit.
